Chapter 9 ANNALISA The waiting room at Caldwell Children’s Medical featured a faded mural on the wall opposite the check-in desk. It was a sprawling forest scene, painted years ago. Shifter animals were tucked between roots and branches—rabbits, deer, and small wolf pups with round, curious eyes. Eli had noticed it the very first time I brought him here. He had stood in front of it for an eternity, just staring. Then, he had pointed to the smallest pup, half-hidden behind a painted oak root, and whispered, "That one is hiding." I hadn't known what to say to that. I had simply whispered, *"Yes,"* and gently steered him toward the reception desk. I thought about that moment now, sitting in the same chair I always chose, the one against the left wall with a clear sightline to both the entrance and the corridor that led to Dr. Nakamura's office.
