Dead Weight のすべてのチャプター: チャプター 61 - チャプター 70

The list on the board is not in Maya’s handwriting. This is noted by several people and mentioned to none of them, because the base has developed functional instincts about which observations improve the morning and which ones generate paperwork.Pete reads the list at 5:47 a.m., drinks the last of his coffee, and says, “I know where to get the tanks.”Maya is standing behind him.“I know you do.”He turns. There it is again. The arithmetic behind his eyes. That slow, private addition he has been doing since the day she handed him a list of IBC suppliers and told him to keep his conspiracy theories to himself. For one second, he looks like a man trying to decide whether to ask the obvious question. Then he chooses not to.Good. Maya is already overstocked on obvious questions.Pete picks up the truck’s keys. “Berkey filters,” he says, heading for the trucks. “Told you

Integration was going well. This was suspicious. Maya had expected friction. Elbows. Whispered loyalties. Someone using the phrase “our people” in a way that made her want to assign latrine duty by bloodline. There was some of that, obviously. Humans remained committed to being furniture with opinions. But Marcus’s people adjusted too quickly. Not perfectly.Perfect would have been easier to hate. They adjusted like water finding channels. Work teams shifted. Watch rotations absorbed them. Food lines stretched, complained, then stabilised. The base became larger, louder, more complicated, and somehow less chaotic than it had any right to be.That was the first problem. The second problem was that they did not communicate enough. Not verbally.Maya noticed it during morning allocation, because she noticed everything during morning allocation. Morning allocation was where civilisation either held or became spoon

The day after the cannery run, the base recovered by becoming aggressively administrative. This was healthy.Probably.The twenty-eight crates were sorted, inspected, labelled, relabeled after Sam objected to Aaron’s use of “saucy miscellaneous,” and moved into storage. The two crates left behind were logged as a loss and not discussed further, which meant everyone discussed them silently at least six times before lunch.Maya stood at the board with a marker in one hand and yesterday’s debrief notes tucked under her arm.The board said:CANNERY28 crates recovered2 abandonedRoute north viable if gate repairedHorde pattern: pendingDog incident: pendingDo not let Aaron name categoriesAaron, reading over her shoulder, said, “That last one feels personal.”“It is operational.”“I contain multitudes.”“You contain thre

Four days after the cannery run, the base produced a quiet hour.A real one.Not the usual apocalypse quiet, which was just noise holding its breath. Actual quiet. No disputes over rations. No one bleeding in medical. No Aaron attempting to improve a storage category by making it worse. No Marcus’s people moving with their unsettling almost-silence through the warehouse like a rumor with boots. For once, the base simply worked.Maya used this badly. She sat behind the rose curtain with the private notebook open in front of her and looked at the grey mark on the map.Not directly at first. Directly would have been an admission. She looked at the red circles for cleared areas. The yellow zones still unknown. The black marks for streets that had earned their color honestly. Then, eventually, because pretending had a short shelf life, she looked at the small grey mark six blocks east of the cannery.A burger place. Probably not Rile

“You didn’t do it yet,” she said.Dex frowned. “Yet?”Maya looked at Miles.“Give us five minutes.”Miles hesitated only long enough to be annoying, then stepped back. Everyone else suddenly remembered urgent business elsewhere. Except they remained, obviously, within earshot. Because people were animals.Maya stepped closer to the fence.“I’ve done this before.”Dex stared at her.“The fall. The dead. The running. The starving. You and me. I remember another version of it.”He said nothing, but he blinked like he privately thinks she’s lost her mind.Good. That was probably the correct response to hearing your ex-girlfriend claim she had already lived through the end of the world once. Anything else would have felt underprepared.“In that version,” Maya said, “we stayed together after the outbreak. I kept us ali
