The Weight of Hope

~Lucian POV~ I woke before dawn. For a few moments, I simply lay there staring at the ceiling while the fortress remained silent around me. The world was still wrapped in darkness, the first hints of morning yet to touch the windows. Then I felt her. Cressida was curled against my side, one arm draped across my chest. Her breathing was soft and even. Strands of dark hair spilled across my shoulder. I looked down at her. The memory of last night returned immediately. Her tears. Her apology. The way she had stood in front of me trembling as she poured out her heart. I love you. The words echoed through my mind again. For years I had believed I would never hear those words and actually want them. After Alina died, something inside me had broken beyond repair. I had accepted it. Accepted that whatever future I might have had died beside her. Yet here Cressida was.Sleeping in my bed. Choosing me. Not because she had to.Because she wanted to. My hand moved bef

Trouble in Blackstone

The moment the guard delivered the report, everything changed. One second I was sitting across from Cressida, watching her try not to smile as I tasted the food she had spent hours making for me. The next, war had come crashing through the door. The council chamber filled within minutes. Generals, commanders, scouts, and advisers poured in. Maps covered the long table. Messages arrived so quickly that one messenger barely left before another appeared. I stood at the head of the table listening as report after report came in. The eastern border had been attacked shortly after sunrise. Three watchtowers had gone silent. Two villages had already been evacuated. Several patrols were missing. By midday it became clear this was no raid. Someone was testing our defenses. Someone had spent months preparing for this. The realization settled heavily over the room. I folded my arms across my chest and studied the map spread before me. “Numbers?” General Varric shook his head. “Unknown.

In his Absence

~Cressida~ I woke up reaching for Lucian as my hand slid across cold sheets. For one sleepy second, I thought he had simply gotten up before me. Then everything came rushing back. The alarms. The attack. The war. The way he had left our chambers in the middle of the night with a sword at his side. The empty space beside me suddenly felt enormous. I stared at the ceiling for a long moment. The room still smelled faintly of him. Smoke, leather, and something uniquely Lucian. It only made his absence worse. I turned onto my side and buried my face in the pillow but sleep was impossible after that. Not that I had slept much to begin with. Every time I closed my eyes, I imagined him riding toward danger. A soft knock came at the door and I sat up immediately. A maid stepped inside and lowered her head. “My lady, Lady Elara has requested the presence of all important members of Blackstone at the packhouse.” I blinked. “Now?” “Yes, my lady.” I nodded and climbed from bed

Beyond Blackstone

The moment the servant left, I broke the seal. My fingers trembled as I unfolded the parchment. It wasn’t even up to a full day and I had waited for word from Lucian. Every minute I found myself glancing toward the gates. Every second I convinced myself a messenger would arrive tomorrow. Now the letter was finally here. I sank onto the edge of the bed and began reading. The first thing I noticed was how long it was. Lucian was definitely not a man many words. Yet line after line filled the page. The attack had been worse than expected. Several neighboring settlements had already fallen. Entire villages had been abandoned. The enemy continued pushing deeper into the territory. Blackstone’s forces were holding the line for now, but only barely. My stomach tightened with every sentence but I kept reading. The further I went, the worse it became. Lucian wrote of constant patrols, and mounting casualties. He described exhaustion among the soldiers and uncertainty

Where the shadow leads

The moment I stepped beneath the trees, the world behind me disappeared. The towering walls of Blackstone vanished behind thick trunks and tangled branches. The torches burning along the fortress walls became tiny flickers in the distance before they disappeared completely. Soon there was nothing left except the forest and me. The air was colder here. It carried the scent of damp earth, moss and pine, and somewhere far above me, leaves rustled as the night breeze slipped through them. I pulled my cloak tighter around my body. “I’m sorry, Lucian,” I whispered. The words drifted into the darkness. “I’m sorry for disobeying you… but if this is the only way to save you, then I have to.” My hand instinctively found the folded page tucked inside my cloak. I had copied only the parts of Lucian’s journal that mentioned the seer before putting the diary back exactly where I had found it. It felt wrong reading something so private, but I knew I would have regretted it even more if I had

Blood and Fire

I wasn’t sure when the dream began. One moment I was asleep beneath the old oak tree. The next, I was standing. I blinked in confusion. The lake was still there. The flowers were still there. The great oak stood exactly where I had fallen asleep. Yet everything looked… different. The sky shimmered with soft silver light even though the sun was nowhere to be seen. Tiny lights floated lazily through the air like stars had abandoned the heavens and drifted down into the forest. The lake itself glowed faintly. Its surface was perfectly still, reflecting a sky that seemed brighter than it should have been. I looked down at my hands. They were there. But somehow I knew this wasn’t. A breeze stirred the flowers. Their sweet fragrance wrapped around me more strongly than before. Then I saw her. She stood near the edge of the lake with her back to me. Long dark hair cascaded almost to her waist. A white dress flowed gently around her ankles although there wa

The Seer

I slowly turned around. The old woman sat comfortably on a worn tree stump as though she had been there all morning. Her cloudy white eyes stared in my direction without truly seeing me. Long strands of grey hair escaped the braid hanging over one shoulder, and deep wrinkles folded around the crooked smile on her face. My heart nearly stopped. It was her. The strange old woman from the marketplace. The one who had warned me about Lucian. My gaze darted past her shoulder. The breath left my lungs. The burned clearing had disappeared. The blackened beams. The cold ashes. The shattered pottery. Everything was gone. In their place stood a small wooden cottage covered in climbing ivy. Smoke drifted lazily from the chimney, and neat bundles of herbs hung beneath the windows as though they had always been there. I blinked once. Then twice. I looked behind me, half expecting to find another clearing. Nothing had changed. When I looked back again, the old woman was st

The Curse of The Alpha King

I stared at the small black stone resting on the table between us. It looked ordinary at first glance. Just a smooth piece of obsidian, no bigger than the palm of my hand. Yet something about it made the air inside the humble hut feel heavier, almost suffocating. “You said…” My voice came out barely above a whisper, trembling slightly. “You would tell me how Lucian became cursed.” “I did,” she replied simply, her tone steady and ancient. She reached for the black stone and placed two fingers lightly on its glossy surface. The gesture was gentle, almost reverent. “But stories have beginnings, child,” she continued softly. Her lips curved into a faint, knowing smile that sent another shiver down my spine. “And every curse begins long before the day it is spoken.” I leaned forward without realizing it, drawn in by her words. The old woman tilted her head slightly, as though listening to distant sounds I could not hear. Sounds from another time. “Close your eyes,” she i

The price of love

The battlefield faded before my eyes. The cries of warriors became little more than whispers carried away by the wind. Even the smell of blood slowly disappeared until only silence remained between us. I looked at the old woman beside me, my heart still aching from the sight of the Alpha King holding his dead mate. The image of his broken form lingered in my mind like a scar that refused to heal. “What choice?” I asked quietly. The seer didn’t answer immediately. Her blind eyes seemed to pierce through layers of time itself. Instead, the world around us shifted once more. Colors swirled and blended in a dizzying dance. The valley dissolved like smoke, replaced by endless roads, changing seasons, and distant mountains. It felt as though years were passing in the blink of an eye. “The war ended,” she said at last, her voice echoing with ancient sorrow. “Blackstone mourned its queen. The entire kingdom wore black for months, their banners lowered in collective grief.” “

The truth the curse never told 1

The world lurched violently beneath my feet. The battlefield disappeared as though someone had blown away thick smoke. The screams faded into nothing. Even the cold wind that had carried the cries of dying warriors melted away into unexpected warmth. I blinked slowly. The little hut came back into focus around me once more. The crackling fireplace cast flickering shadows. For several long seconds I couldn’t move at all. My chest rose and fell in uneven breaths as I stared at the dancing flames. My hands were trembling so badly that I curled them into tight fists to stop the shaking. I could still see him clearly in my mind. The First Alpha King. His knees pressed against the cold stone floor. His face was wet with tears as he begged desperately for the impossible. I had never imagined someone so powerful could look so utterly broken and vulnerable. The old woman hadn’t moved an inch. She sat quietly across from me as though she had all the time in the world.
