I woke to the sound of dripping water. At first, I thought I was still dreaming. My thoughts floated in a fog of pain and confusion, heavy and slow, as though my mind were struggling to rise through deep water. My head throbbed with a dull, relentless ache. Every breath carried the sharp scent of rust, wet concrete, and motor oil. Cold seeped into my skin. When I tried to move, rough rope bit viciously into my wrists. Panic hit me. My eyes snapped open. For one terrible second, I had no idea where I was. Then reality came crashing down. I was tied to a metal chair in the middle of what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse.
