FREYAKendrick assigned me to the night patrol without much warning, catching me in the hallway after breakfast with the same brisk efficiency he brought to every decision.“You’ve earned it,” he said, before I could ask why. “Months of training, and you’ve shown consistent instinct in every drill I’ve thrown at you. Patrol will test that instinct against real stakes instead of staged ones. Be at the eastern gate by dusk.”I spent the rest of the day equal parts nervous and quietly thrilled, the kind of anticipation I hadn’t associated with myself in longer than I could remember. Months ago I would have assumed patrol was reserved entirely for warriors who’d proven themselves through years of loyal service, certainly not for a banished Alpha’s daughter who’d arrived here broken and barefoot. That Kendrick trusted me with this now, without hesitation, without treating it as some kind of exception made for pity’s sake, settled a steady warmth in my chest that no amount of training bruis

FREYAThe rest of the patrol moved ahead of us, escorting the rogue back toward the house, and somehow, without either of us deciding it outright, Dante and I fell behind, letting the distance between us and the group stretch until the sound of their footsteps faded into the quiet hum of the forest at night.Neither of us mentioned it. We simply walked slower, matching pace without discussion, the moonlight filtering in thin and silvery through the canopy of foilage overhead, painting the path ahead in soft, shifting patches of light and shadow. The night had cooled considerably since we’d first set out, a faint mist beginning to curl low along the forest floor, and somewhere in the distance an owl called out once before falling silent again, the whole world settling into a hush that felt private, almost sacred, entirely separate from the chaos of the clearing we’d left behind.“You’re limping ever so slightly,” Dante said eventually, glancing at me sideways with quiet concern.“It’s

FREYAI found Damien an hour later, sitting on the porch steps with a cup of tea that had long since gone cold, staring out at nothing in particular. The porch had been our spot for weeks now, the pastries, the card games, the quiet conversations that had gradually built into a connection I’d genuinely treasured, and seeing him there alone, tea forgotten and untouched, made my stomach twist with a guilt I hadn’t fully anticipated feeling.“Can we talk,” I asked, sitting down beside him without waiting for an invitation.“About what?” His tone was light, easy, exactly the voice he used with everyone, the practiced charm I’d learned weeks ago to recognize as armor rather than genuine ease. “Nice weather we’re having. Kendrick’s threatening extra drills tomorrow. Take your pick.”“Damien.”“I’m fine, Freya.” He said it too quickly, too smoothly, his eyes staying fixed on the horizon rather than meeting mine. “You don’t need to have this conversation. Whatever you’re bracing yourself to s

FREYAI couldn’t sleep that night, or the night after, my thoughts caught in an endless, exhausting loop between two men who somehow, impossibly, both held pieces of my heart I hadn’t known I was capable of giving away. I’d lie awake staring at the ceiling, replaying conversations, replaying touches, trying to sort feeling from confusion and finding, each time, that the exercise only left me more tangled than before.I told myself it would sort itself out eventually, that time and clarity would eventually reveal which feeling was real and which was simply confusion born from proximity and gratitude and the strange, disorienting months I’d spent rebuilding myself on Hamilton land. But the days that followed only tangled things further rather than clarifying anything at all. If anything, the passage of time seemed to deepen both connections simultaneously, rather than allowing one to naturally fade in favor of the other, the way I’d quietly hoped it might.Dante found small ways to be n

FREYAKendrick reached into his jacket and withdrew a leather-bound book, worn at the edges and tied closed with a faded ribbon that might have once been blue but had long since turned gray with age. He held it carefully, the way someone might hold something fragile and irreplaceable, before extending it toward me across the space between us. “She gave this to me three years ago,” he said quietly. “Asked me to keep it safe, to give it to you when the time was right. I think that time has come now, given everything that's happened and everything still ahead of you.” I took the journal from him with shaking hands, the leather soft and warm beneath my fingers, worn smooth by years of handling. My mother's scent still clung faintly to the pages, that familiar mix of lavender and something sweeter I'd never been able to identify, a smell that brought back memories of childhood I hadn't thought about in years. For a moment I couldn't do anything except hold it, overwhelmed by the weight of
