CHAPTER 14 CEASEFIRE. After dinner, Isabel stood up and clapped her hands lightly. “Liam, help your mother take the dirty dishes to the kitchen,” she said, pretending to be tired. “My bones are getting old. I get sore and sleepy so quickly.” “I’ll take care of it. You should rest,” Liam replied calmly as he gathered the empty plates, stacking them neatly with his own. His movements were practiced. Isabel smiled warmly at Chatrine. “Dear, I’ll go to bed first. Thank you for coming. I really enjoyed having dinner together.” Chatrine returned the smile softly. “Have a good rest, Aunt.” Once Isabel disappeared upstairs, the dining room fell quiet. Only Chatrine and Liam remained, sitting across from each other. For a moment, the only sound was the soft ticking of the wall clock. “Are you done?” Liam asked quietly, reaching for Chatrine’s plate. “I can do it myself,” Chatrine quickly pulled her plate away, not letting him take it. “That’s my mother’s favorite plate,” Liam
