JULIANI dialed Hunter’s number and waited. It rang out. Four rings, then silence. Not even to voicemail, just the call ending on its own.“Nothing?” Scarlet asked, watching my face intently.“Nothing.” I set the phone back down on the counter, staring at it like it might explain the situation. “He always picks up. Even when he’s in a meeting, he usually texts back within a minute if he can’t talk. This isn’t like him.”“Maybe he’s just busy.”“Maybe,” I stated, but I didn’t believe it, and from the look on Scarlet’s face, neither did she.I waited for five minutes for a text message or a call back, and when I didn’t get one, I decided to try again. This time he picked up after the third ring.“Julian.” Hunter’s voice came through the phone. “Sorry I missed your call earlier. I’ve been hounded by meetings all through the day.”“No trouble really, I just wanted to touch base, especially since the news dropped.”There was a pause on his end, brief enough that I might have imagined it.
