All Chapters of The Things We Don't Say: Chapter 81 - Chapter 90

The waiter arrived about ten minutes ago to get our order, yet he was still at our table. Because Emma didn't know what she wanted to eat and was taking a God-awful time deciding. Even Nita, who seemed to be the most cheerful one at the table, didn't look like she could take it anymore.“How about I help you order?” she said in a sweet tone that sounded a tad fake. “I am sort of a regular here and can advise you on the things that taste really good.”"I'll pass," Emma responded. Or rather, whispered in an airy tone. Although she had a smile on her face, her response seemed very intentional and strategic. "I don't know about your taste and… I have very particular ones. I'm vegetarian."If I wasn't bothered about what was wrong with Jordan, I would have burst out laughing at that. Nita nodded curtly, then turned to me. "What the hell is wrong with her?" she whispered. "And if she jerks that knee one more time right next to me, I am going to call security on her. I don't care what the bo

I flicked the lighter and brought it to the butt of the cigarette, taking in a deep breath as the flames licked up the white stick. Leaning against the wall at the back of the diner, I closed my eyes, letting the cloud of smoke dance in my face. I felt stressed for some strange reason. Tonight was supposed to be going well. I had a hot woman by my side and a great meal. Yet, I felt entirely stressed and angry. And even more annoying was the fact that I didn't know what had gotten me so pissed.Taking another puff, I waited for the feeling to hit. Fuck Marcus. Fuck him for lying to me about his sexuality. It was true that my mother wasn't the best when it came to dependability and reliability, but she wouldn't lie about something like this.Or would she?Maybe I was overreacting. It didn’t even matter because…Because…I hated this feeling.Another puff.I couldn’t describe it. I didn’t even know what it was. It felt like a clawed creature tearing its way through my chest. And when I

They were already leaving, packing their bags and getting their coats before filing out the door. Nita was waiting for me by the table, my jacket in her hands and a look I couldn’t decipher in her eyes. “What?” I muttered when I got closer. "You didn't have to be a jerk to him, you know? He did nothing wrong, other than lock lips with you. And you are the only one in this scenario that finds it wrong, by the way."I took my jacket from her. “It’s not about the kiss. I mean, the kiss probably contributed to it, but…it wasn’t about him. Emma was a pleasant date.”“Didn’t sound like it when you asked her to leave,” she shot back, handing me my keys too. “You hated the whole experience, but you won’t admit it to yourself because of your pride.”“Careful, Nita.”“Actually, no.” She didn’t surprise me at all. “I think I have earned the right to be called and act your friend, seeing as we have shared a bottle of scotch and your mother has walked in on me sitting behind your desk. And what

My father was waiting behind his desk when I walked in, and from the look on his face, it was a conversation we both knew I wouldn't like. His hands were clasped on the table in front of him, and a stern look settled between his eyes.Closing the door behind me, I dropped into one of the couches, making sure to put as much distance as I could between the two of us. The last thing I wanted was to hear whatever he had to say while standing so close to him. I didn't think my patience was that great."Good of you to join me, Jordan," he started, getting on his feet. "Surely, answering one's father the instant they call is now a fast-declining tradition. Maybe I need to get up to speed with what kids these days are doing."I watched as he moved to the mini bar by the left side of his study, right next to the rows of books. “Or maybe I need to be harder with you. I don’t get it, Jordan. What is wrong with you?”I wasn’t entirely certain if that was a question, because he said it so calmly t

“Marcus, can we talk?”We were in front of the Arthurs' mansion, and I was getting my suitcase out of the trunk. Apparently, they had a helipad on the rooftop of their building, and we were taking off from there. I'd only seen the possibility of that in movies and books. “If you are going to tell me how soft I am and how my feelings would get hurt because I accepted a job that I think could change my life, then I don’t want to hear it.”My mom sighed, coming to join me by the trunk regardless. The gates opened behind us, and a man dressed in a dark suit stepped out. "I'm sorry," she sighed. "I gave birth to you, Marcus. That is how I know you are not in any way weak. You are one of the strongest people I know, and I am not saying that simply because I am your mother. You left home at a young age, seeking something that neither we, your parents, nor your brother had the guts to. You are strong and believe in what you stand for."I stopped fussing with my suitcase. “Then, why, Mom?”S
