Chapter Fifty-One:

December arrives the way it always does in New York. Not gradually. All at once. One morning in November the city is gray and somber, and the next it is Christmas lights on every block and the specific cold that comes off the Hudson and finds the gaps in every coat no matter how good the coat is. The penthouse fills with it differently than the street level. Up here the cold is just light and blue-white and clean through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city glittering below like it knows it is being watched and has decided to perform.I notice this on a Tuesday morning while standing at the window with coffee and realize I have now watched this city move through four seasons. I arrived in late winter. I watched it go through spring and summer and autumn, and now here is winter again, and I am a completely different person standing at the same window, or not completely different, but more myself. That is closer to accurate.Alexander comes up behind me. He does not say good morning.

Chapter Fifty-Two:

Edmund Charles talks the way he writes.I understand this within the first ten minutes of sitting at his kitchen table with a bowl of red beans and rice in front of me and the man himself across the table, his hands moving when he speaks, the words coming in the same rhythm as his poems, unhurried and precise and with the specific quality of someone who has spent seventy-one years paying attention to exactly the right things. He talks about the street first. How long he has lived here. Forty-three years, the same house, the same view from the front porch, and the oak tree growing incrementally across four decades until now; it owns the sidewalk and nobody minds. He talks about the neighborhood changing around him, the slow demographic shift, the restaurants and the music venues and the people who came and the people who left and the people who stayed. He talks about all of it the way you talk about something you love without needing it to be other than what it is.Then he talks about

Chapter Fifty-Three:

I draw the tree at midnight.Alexander is asleep in the hotel room behind me, one arm across the space where I was, his breathing slow and even. I am at the small desk by the window with my travel sketchbook and the charcoal I bring everywhere and the amber light of the New Orleans street coming in through the gap in the curtains.I draw from memory. The oak tree on Edmund's street under the lamp. The bare branches are reaching in the specific December way, not sparse exactly but more like deliberate, like a thing that has decided exactly how much it needs and stopped there. The roots lifting the sidewalk. The lamplight was catching the uppermost branches and leaving the lower ones in a warmer dark.I draw it three times. The first is too careful. The second is closer, but I am still managing it, still making decisions that are about control rather than truth. The third one I draw faster, without stopping to assess, and when I sit back and look at it, I see that I have put roses in it

Chapter Fifty-Four:

We land back in New York on a Saturday afternoon to sixteen missed calls and a city that has gotten colder in the two days we were gone.I see the calls in the car from the airport. Marcus, four times. Margaret, twice. Three are board members whose names I recognize as the kind of people who do not call on weekends unless something has moved that they did not expect to move. The remaining seven are from a number I do not recognize, which means a journalist has gotten hold of my personal line, which happens approximately twice a year and never means anything good.I do not return any of them in the car.Sophia is beside me with Edmund's poem in her jacket pocket and her sketchbook open on her knee, drawing the cloud formations we flew through, which she started on the plane and has not finished. She has not noticed the calls. I do not tell her about them yet. She has two more hours of the New Orleans feeling, and I am not going to take that from her before I know what I am dealing with

Chapter Fifty-Five:

Sunday morning arrives gray and still.I am at my desk before Alexander wakes. This has not changed in eight months, and I have stopped expecting it to. I am simply a person who wakes before dawn and needs an hour alone before the day begins, and Alexander is simply a person who understands this without requiring an explanation, and that small accommodation, unremarked upon and consistent, is one of the things I will think about when I think about what love actually looks like in practice.I did not sleep well. Not because of Derek. Because of Edmund's poem, which I read again at two in the morning by the light of my phone, the eight small and precise lines in his handwriting, and something about reading it in the dark of the penthouse after the New Orleans porch made it land differently. Most finally. Like a door I had been standing in front of for months had swung open while I was looking somewhere else.I am going to show the work. Not almost going to. Not thinking about it. Going

Chapter Fifty-Six:

Tuesday arrives with the specific weight of a day that has too many things in it.Clara Osei is coming at two. The litigation team sends their draft filings at seven in the morning, and I read them at the kitchen counter before Sophia is awake, going through every line with the attention I give documents that matter, which is total and unhurried and leaves nothing unread. They are good. Marcus has built a clean argument on the privacy grounds, and the sanctions motion is precise without being aggressive, which is the correct register for a judge who responds to overreach by punishing it.I make notes in the margins. Send them back by eight.Sophia comes downstairs at eight thirty with her hair still damp and the specific, focused quality she has on days when something important is happening. She is wearing the dark green dress she chose herself, not from the wardrobe I provided, bought three weeks ago from a small shop in the West Village that she found on her own. She wears it when s

Chapter Fifty-Seven:

Wednesday is the day before Thursday, and I spend it reading. Not the litigation files. I finished those Tuesday night, every page, every footnote, until I understood the argument as well as anyone who did not go to law school could understand it. I know what Marcus is filing. I know what Derek's lawyers will say in response. I know the judge's pattern and the privacy grounds and the sanctions motion and all the ways Thursday could go. I cannot do anything more about Thursday today. So I read.Edmund's poems. The full forty-three. I have read them before, but I read them again today at my desk with the morning light coming in flat and gray and the city quiet below, reading slowly the way you read things you want to actually receive rather than just process.By the eleventh poem I have stopped thinking about Thursday entirely. That is the thing about Edmund's work. It does not allow for distraction. It requires you to be in the street with him, on the porch, in the specific quality of

Chapter Fifty-Eight:

The hearing is at nine.We are in the car at seven forty-five. Sophia is in a dark coat, hair up, with the specific composed quality she brings to things that require her full self. She has her phone in her lap, and she is not looking at it. She is looking out the window at the city moving past, early-morning Manhattan doing what it does, urgent and indifferent simultaneously.Marcus is already at the courthouse when we arrive. He is standing outside with two members of the litigation team, a woman named Priya, who argues and files federal motions with the focused precision of someone who finds procedural combat genuinely pleasurable, and a younger man named Cole, whose job today is to carry documents and notice everything.Priya shakes Sophia's hand. "We are in good shape," she says. Not reassurance. Assessment."Walk me through the sequence again," Sophia says.Priya does. Standing on the courthouse steps in the December cold, she walks through every step of the morning's argument i

Chapter Fifty-Nine:

The sanctions ruling comes on a Friday.I am in my room working on the catalog text when Marcus calls Alexander. I hear the call from the hallway, the low register that means something has moved, and I put my charcoal down and wait.Alexander appears in my doorway two minutes later."Sanctions granted," he says.I still go. "Against Derek's legal team." "Yes. Formal censure. Financial penalty. The ruling cites deliberate procedural misuse." He pauses. "The judge used the phrase 'chilling effect on charitable communication' verbatim from Priya's argument. He put it in the written ruling."I look at my desk. In the catalog text, four pages, the words I have been choosing carefully all morning to describe what the window series is and what it costs."Derek's lawyers are going to drop him," I say."Already have. Walsh filed a withdrawal of representation this morning. The censure is a mark against the firm. They cannot afford to keep a client who produces that outcome." "So he has no repr

Chapter Sixty:

The fourteenth piece changes something in the penthouse.I notice it the day after Sophia finishes it. The drawing is on her desk, not yet photographed properly for Clara's records, not yet matted or prepared for installation, just sitting there in the early light, and I find myself standing in her doorway looking at it for longer than I intend to. The woman in the window looking out and finding herself reflected back. The lamp. The desk. The fifteen paintings in the background."Home," I said. She is home.I meant it about the woman in the drawing. I also meant it about Sophia. I also meant it about myself, which is the part I am still getting used to. The specific unfamiliar weight of a place feeling like home. I have owned this penthouse for six years. I have slept here, worked here, and conducted business from every room. I have never once, before this year, walked through the door at the end of a day and felt the particular settling of a person returning to the right place.I fee
