Chapter Sixty-One:

Maya's photographs arrive on a Monday morning.Twelve of them. Attached to an email that is three sentences long is the careful brevity of someone who has decided to be brave and is not going to dilute it with unnecessary words. These are the ones I think are the most true. I don't know if they are good. I know they are honest. I open the attachments one at a time. The face is a woman's. Young, maybe thirty, maybe ageless—it is hard to say because Maya has not drawn her with the specificity of portraiture but with the specificity of someone drawing a feeling in the shape of a face. The eyes change across the twelve drawings. Not the structure of them; the actual eyes stay consistent, the same placement, and the same proportion, but what is in them shifts across the series the way light shifts across seventeen paintings of the same oak tree.In the first drawing the eyes are closed. In the last drawing, the eyes are open and looking directly out of the page. Between them, ten drawings

Chapter Sixty-Two:

February moves differently than the months before it.There is a quality to the penthouse in February that I have not noticed in the six years I have owned it. Something to do with the light, which is still winter but with a different angle to it, arriving lower through the floor-to-ceiling windows and lying across the floors in long pale strips that were not there in December. Or maybe the light has always done this, and I was not paying attention because there was nobody here whose attention to light had taught me to notice it.Sophia notices everything the light does. I have learned to notice her noticing. She is at the kitchen counter on a Tuesday morning with her coffee and her phone and the specific, focused quality she has when something is assembling itself in her mind before she has language for it yet. I have learned to recognize this state and leave it alone until she surfaces from it. I make my coffee. Read the Kane Global brief open on my laptop. Give her the room. After

Chapter Sixty-Three:

The night before the opening, I cannot sleep. This is not surprising. I have known for two weeks that I would not sleep the night before. I have made peace with it the way you make peace with things you cannot change, acknowledged it, and set it aside, and now here it is at two in the morning exactly as predicted, and I am sitting at my desk with my charcoal and my sketchbook and the city below doing its late-night version of itself, quieter than day but never fully quiet, always something moving.Edmund is in his hotel three blocks away. Patrick is in the guest room down the hall. Alexander is asleep behind the closed bedroom door, or was when I got up at one thirty, his breathing slow and even and entirely unbothered by the fact that tomorrow is the most significant thing I have done in my life so far.I do not resent his ability to sleep. I find it, actually, a specific comfort. The steady, reliable fact of him asleep in the next room while I sit with the insomnia of the night befo

Chapter Sixty-Four:

The gallery opens at six.By five forty-five, there are people on the sidewalk outside Meridian waiting. Not a crowd exactly. But enough. Clara's team manages the entrance with the quiet efficiency of people who have done this before and understand that the first ten minutes of an opening sets the register for the entire evening. We arrive at five thirty. Sophia, Edmund, Patrick, and I were in the car, Thomas driving, the city going from afternoon to evening outside the windows. Sophia is looking at her hands in her lap. Not anxious exactly. Inward. The specific quality of someone moving toward something they have been building toward for a long time.Edmund is beside her. He is wearing a suit that is older but well kept, the suit of a man who owns one good suit and maintains it with the same care he gives his notebooks. He has a rose in his breast pocket. I know this because he told us at dinner last night about a small photograph folded once, the one of her on the porch with the boo

Chapter Sixty-Five:

He is walking toward me.I see him from across the gallery, moving through the people with the unhurried certainty he brings to everything, and something in the quality of his movement is different tonight. Not the controlled precision of a man navigating a professional room. Something more deliberate than that. More directed. He reaches me.The gallery moves around us. Voices and footsteps and the low murmur of people standing in front of charcoal drawings trying to find language for what they are seeing. Edmund was near the entrance, reading the sentence on the wall for the third time. Patrick was laughing at something a journalist said near the sixth piece.Alexander stands in front of me and looks at me with the pale, direct eyes that have never once looked away when I needed them not to."Walk with me," he says."The opening—""Five minutes."Something in his voice. Not urgent. The opposite of urgent. The specific quality of someone who has arrived somewhere and is very certain a

Chapter Sixty-Six:

The gallery empties slowly. The way good openings empty. Not a sudden departure but a gradual thinning, people leaving in ones and twos, lingering at the door, saying the things people say when they have been somewhere that required something of them and they are not quite ready to step back into the ordinary evening outside.Clara walks the spiral one final time after the last guest leaves. I watch her from the entrance, moving through the pieces in the empty gallery with the specific attention of someone checking that the work is still intact after a room full of people have brought their full selves to it. She stops at the fourteenth piece for a long moment. Then she comes back."Forty-seven people through the spiral tonight," she says to Sophia. "Eleven asked about purchasing. Three inquired about prints." She pauses. "One woman stood in front of the seventh piece for twenty-two minutes. My assistant timed it."Sophia goes still. "Twenty-two minutes." "Yes." Clara looks at her wit

Chapter Sixty-Seven:

I call my father at nine in the morning.Alexander is in the study. I am at the kitchen counter with coffee and my phone and the specific calm of someone who has slept deeply after an enormous day and woken up on the other side of it still intact. The ring on my finger catches the morning light when I pick up the phone. I look at it for a moment before I dial.My father picks up on the second ring."Sophia." The careful voice. The ice-testing quality. And then, before I can say anything, I say, "I came last night. To the gallery. I did not know if you saw me.""I saw you," I say. "Near the end. You were leaving." "I did not want to." He stops. "It was your evening. I did not want to make it about me being there."I think about him walking the spiral alone. Standing in front of fourteen pieces of charcoal without knowing I was watching. A man learning, slowly, what it means to witness something without taking up the space that belongs to it. "How long were you there?" I ask."An hour.

Chapter Sixty-Eight:

My father arrives at the gallery on Saturday at noon exactly.I am already inside, near the entrance, when I see him through the glass door. He is standing on the sidewalk looking at the facade of Meridian with the specific quality of someone preparing himself. Not hesitating. Preparing. There is a difference, and I have learned to see it.He comes through the door. He is wearing his good coat. The dark wool one he saves for occasions that matter. I have not seen it since my mother's funeral, a thought I have and set aside immediately because today is not that day. Today is a different kind of occasion."Sophia," he says. "Dad," I look at him. He looks older than the coffee shop in October. Grayer. Something in his face that was not there before, a quality of openness that sits where the careful management used to be. Grief does this sometimes. Or trying does. "Come in."He follows me to the entrance of the spiral. He stops at the sentence on the wall. You make the shape of the thing

Chapter Sixty-Nine:

The anthology goes to print on a Tuesday in late March.Patrick sends a photograph of the final file confirmation at eleven in the morning. A screenshot, the kind that is not beautiful but is exactly right; a document name; a timestamp; and the word *"submitted"* in small green text that means the thing exists now in a form that cannot be taken back.Sophia is at the kitchen counter when it arrives. She looks at the photograph for a long moment. Then she sets her phone down and picks up her coffee and looks at the wall of paintings."It is done," she says. "Yes.""Edmund's poems are in it." "Yes.""Maya's drawings." "Yes.""The sculptor in Detroit. The filmmaker in Portland. The carpenter's daughter in London." She looks at CB on the summer painting. "My mother at the beginning of every section. Just the initials, just the dates." "Yes."She is quiet for a moment. "Patrick said the printer estimates six weeks. Physical copies arrive in mid-May." "Yes. In time for the April launch.""W

Chapter Seventy:

Edmund is still in the chair by the window when I find him.The garden below is doing what April gardens do before they have fully committed. The grass is the tentative green of something recently decided. The flower beds are mostly preparation, dark earth, and the first suggestions of color, a few early blooms that arrived before the others and are standing in the cold like people who showed up too early to a party and are not sorry about it.Edmund has his notebook open on his knee, but he is not writing. He is looking at the garden with the specific attention of a man who has spent forty years noticing what light does to familiar things and has not yet run out of ways to see it.I sit on the edge of the bed across from him.He does not look away from the window. "Your estate is very beautiful," he says."Alexander's estate." "Yours," he says. Simply. The way he says true things. I look at the garden. "In June it will be our wedding garden. Thirty people. Afternoon light." I pause.
