AVA POV I stored frozen in my steps, I couldn’t move. And not because I didn’t want to but somehow, my body seemed to have forgotten how. My eyes stayed glued across the hospital parking lot, glued on Serge as I watched him get out and stand beside his black RollsRoyce. His silver eyes remained locked unwaveringly onto mine. For some reason, everything seemed to slow down in my eyes, like I was caught up in some kind of truce as the morning traffic noise, all the cars that were driving past and all over the lot seemed to slowly faze out between us. The corking noise of the automatic hospital doors behind me as they slid open and shut every few seconds quietly started falling out in my ears too. I felt my fingers tighten around the strap of my handbag so hard that am was sure my knuckles were turning white at this point. Wh..What was he doing here? Why was he even here? To torment me? Make sure everything moved according to how he wanted and expected it. To m

AVA POV The room was too quiet. Or perhaps, I was just simply too overwhelmed to hear anything properly right now. I lay flat on my back, staring at the ceiling above me while the doctor moved the ultrasound machine across my lower part of my stomach, on top of the cold gel spread across my skin. The screen beside me flickered with shades of black and gray as the doctor talked. She kept on going on about some thing to do with my baby’s current size, comparing it to lemons or something. I could hear her voice as she mentioned about measurements then about the pregnancy. Something important but the words only seemed to fade in and out. My mind couldn’t hold onto any of them. Because all I could think about was Serge. “Our first antenatal visit.” I swallowed thick saliva as the words he said to the receptionist earlier found their way back into my ears. How? How and when did we gone from him telling me to remove the baby yesterday, to this? To him asking m

AVA POV “You can’t be serious.” My voice cracked the moment the words left my mouth. And I hated it. I hated how weak I sounded. How shaken and how scared all this made me feel. Yet none of that seemed to affect Serge as he simply stood there staring at me. Expressionless. As though he had just proposed a business merger instead of marriage. As though asking me to marry him was the most reasonable thing in the world. I shook my head. A bitter laugh escaped me. “No.” His jaw tightened. “Ava—” “No, listen to me.” For once, I didn’t let him interrupt. “I’m sorry, but that’s not going to happen.” His eyes darkened. “You don’t get to decide what happens next.” “I wasn’t deciding—” “Weren’t you?” The question came out sharper than I intended. My ches

AVA POV A strange sound pulled me from sleep and I stared up at the dark ceiling in the room. At first, I thought I was dreaming. I shifted beneath my blanket and squeezed my eyes shut, hoping whatever had disturbed me would simply disappear. Instead, another noise echoed through the apartment. It was a muffled voice. Then another. My brows furrowed and slowly reopened my eyes. The room was dark. The digital clock on my bedside table glowed softly. 3:57 a.m. I groaned. Who on earth was making noise at four in the morning? Still half asleep, I reached for my phone and checked the time again. Nope. Definitely not a nightmare. Another sound drifted through the apartment. This one louder. They seemed like panicked voices and that had my stomach tightened in anticipation. Matthew? Pushing aside the blanket, I slipped my feet into my slippers and reached for the robe hanging beside the bed. The apartment was cool as I stepped into the hallway.

AVA POV. “Matthew, are you sure you’re okay?” He has been shaking his legs nervously ever since we got to the clinic and honestly, it’s starting to annoy me a little bit. “You know, if hospitals make you feel nauseous, you can just wait in the car.” “Am fine Ava, okay?” His voice is much sharper this time and it takes me a minute to realize how rude he is getting. “Whatever. Suit yourself.” I say and stand up to leave. He has been acting antsy ever since Leo left the house last night and how we much I asked him what the problem was, all he said way am okay, yet clearly we wasn’t. But if he wanted to start being rude and take it out on me, then i sure as would be damned to be present for that. Spotting an empty chair, I ignore his frail voice calling me out as I head to sit somewhere far from him. He had insisted to having a check up done for the baby and however much I told him k already got it done, he couldn’t stop asking to take it again. So that explains w
