The Human Stain

The first thing I learned about being a queen was that it felt a lot like being a corpse.Cold, discarded, and waiting for the earth to take what was left.I was only six years old the night my father, the Alpha King, decided I was a defect.I can still see the North Star pinned between black branches as I ran until my lungs burned like swallowed coals.Behind me, the Great Hunt wasn’t chasing a deer. They were chasing me.“Faster, little wolf,” the King’s Beta mocked from the shadows. He moved through the frozen woods like a predator. He was the man who had tucked me into my bed only a week before, smiling at me with what I thought was kindness. Now, he was a total stranger.“A daughter of the Throne should at least provide a good chase before she’s culled!”I tripped over a root and hit the ground hard.I lifted my head, shaking, and saw him.The Alpha King stood at the edge of the clearing. Even in his wolf form, his presence was heavier than the cold itself. He didn't lo

The Shadow in the Light

The impact wasn't a sound—it was a feeling that shattered the world. In that final, impossible second, everything slowed to a crawl. My eyes betrayed me, showing details too sharp to be real. I saw the spider-web cracks in the car’s plastic bumper. I saw the individual pits in the glass. I saw the frantic terror in the driver's eyes as he realized it was too late to brake.I waited for the crushing weight of metal to finish me. I heard a howl in my bones—a sound so loud it felt like my identity was splintering apart. It wasn't a sound from the street; it was a sound from inside my own DNA.But the collision I felt wasn't the car.Instead of cold steel, I was hit by something warm, solid, and terrifyingly fast.Strong arms clamped around my waist, wrenching me backward with enough force to snatch the air from my lungs. I didn't have time to gasp. I was dragged through the air, my feet barely skimming the pavement as the world became a blur of motion. The car tore through the exac

The Changing Shade

After he left, I stayed on that cold street corner much longer than I needed to.The streetlights buzzed with a dull hum, flickering as if they were struggling to stay alive. The wind bit at my skin, but I didn't feel the cold. I felt a strange, buzzing warmth radiating from the spots where he had touched me.Nothing around me had changed, yet everything inside me had been rearranged. As I finally started moving, my feet felt lighter than they should have. I found myself smiling without even realizing it.I kept imagining his voice. Would it be deep? Or as cold as the forest in my memories? I replayed the way he had looked at me—not with pity, but with a strange kind of recognition.By the time I reached the front gate of our house, the adrenaline was starting to fade, replaced by a jittery, nervous energy. The gate creaked as I stepped inside the yard, the sound loud in the quiet neighborhood.Evelyn, my mother, was the first person I saw through the window. She was always awak

The Predator's Mark

I didn’t notice him at first. The silence in the house felt heavy, almost solid, pressing against my bedroom walls like a physical weight. It wasn't the peaceful quiet of a home at rest; it was a thick, expectant silence.I was submerged in the memory of the stranger—the way his hand had felt, firm and impossibly cool. I could still feel the phantom pressure of his grip on my waist, a ghost-touch that refused to fade.I had no idea Ethan was standing in the doorway. The air in the room suddenly tightened. The temperature dropped ten degrees in a single second, turning my breath into a faint mist that I didn't even see.I lay on my side, staring at a shadow on the wall, unaware that the girl in the bed didn't look right. I didn't look like the sister he had grown up with. I didn't look like the girl who had tripped over her own feet at dinner just yesterday.A sharp pressure built in the room, vibrating against my eardrums. My skin felt itchy with the intensity of a gaze I couldn

The Energy of Love

The sunlight didn’t just wake me up the next morning; it practically shouted at me.Usually, the early morning rays hitting my face felt like an intrusion, a signal of another long day of chores and textbooks. But today, the light felt electric. I sat up with a snap, my muscles feeling coiled and springy, as if I’d been replaced by a newer, better version of myself while I slept. The heavy, cold pressure from the night before was gone, replaced by a buzzing warmth that I could only describe as an "afterglow."I didn't think about the car. I didn't think about the howling. I only thought about him.He saved me, I thought, hugging my knees to my chest as a goofy smile stretched across my face. I stayed there for a while, replaying the way his hand had felt—solid and real—against my waist. I felt like I had a secret that made me better than everyone else.Downstairs, the house was already moving. My mother had decided it was the day to move the heavy storage crates from the backyard

The Encounter

The next week was a blur of obsession. Every waking moment was spent replaying the rescue in my mind, searching for a face I couldn't fully describe in a crowd of strangers. I looked for him everywhere—in the reflection of shop windows, in the shadows of the park, and in the faces of every passerby. My body felt like a live wire, humming with an energy that made it impossible to sit still. One morning, near the market, a motorbike roared past and a thief snatched an old lady's bag. Before I could even think, I was moving. I wasn't just running; I was a streak of light. I reached the end of the alley before the bike did, grabbed the thief’s arm, and hauled him off the seat. After tying him up and calling for help, I handed the bag back to the breathless woman. She looked at me, a knowing, gentle smile on her face. "You have the look of someone searching for something. Searching for love, perhaps?"I was shocked, my heart racing with a fear of my own body. "How... how could you poss

The Morning the Sky Bruised

The sun didn’t rise the next morning; it bruised the sky.I woke up with my heart performing a frantic, uneven rhythm against my ribs. My breath hitched as if I had been running in my sleep. For a long, disorienting second, I didn't know where I was.I expected to feel the bite of the North Star’s frost or the rough bark of a pine tree against my back. I expected to hear the baying of hounds.Instead, I felt the soft cotton of my duvet and the familiar, faint scent of lavender laundry detergent.I was home. I was safe. I was just Elara.I rolled onto my side, my muscles aching with a strange, heavy soreness. It didn't make sense. I hadn't gone to the gym. I hadn't gone for a run. Yet, I felt like I had spent the night hauling stones."Elara! If you aren't out of that bed in five minutes, I’m telling Mom you’re the one who broke the blender!"Ethan’s voice boomed through the door, followed by a heavy, playful thud against the wood. I groaned, pulling the pillow over my head."Go away,

When He Said My Name

The "Old Tank" let out a final, agonizing wheeze before Ethan killed the engine. We were parked a block away from Blackwood High, mostly because Ethan didn't want to be seen being towed into the school parking lot on the first day."Stay close to me," Ethan said, his voice losing its playful edge as he stared at the iron gates of the school."And Liv, if anyone looks at you funny, you find me or Elara immediately. Got it?"Liv rolled her eyes, clutching her backpack. "I was here all last semester, Ethan. I know where the exits are.""Just checking," he muttered. We walked toward the entrance, a trio of siblings trying to look like we belonged. But as we crossed the threshold, I felt that strange vibration again—the one that started at the base of my skull and settled in my marrow. My skin felt tight, buzzing with an energy I couldn't explain."ELARA!"A weight slammed into my back, and a pair of arms wrapped tightly around my neck.I didn't need to look to know it was Maya. She smelle

A Wolf in a Ribbon

Standing on that stage felt like being a bug under a microscope. The heat of the gym’s overhead lights beat down on me, making the "glow" on my skin feel like a literal fever.Every eye in the building was a needle, stitching me into place. I could feel the sweat pooling at the nape of my neck, right where that single shimmering strand of hair was hidden.Vice Principal Grimmer was so close I could smell the cold, metallic scent of his suit.He didn’t look like a man about to deliver news. He looked like a butcher deciding where to make the first cut.His eyes stayed fixed on my throat, watching the frantic pulse there with a dark, hungry intensity.Beside him, Principal Higgins looked like she was standing on a landmine. Her hands shook so violently that the paper she held rattled against the microphone—a sharp crinkle-crinkle that echoed through the silent gym.She kept darting terrified glances at Grimmer, her chest heaving as if she were struggling to breathe in his presence."Fol

The Fundamental Friction of Fiction

The Fundamental Friction of Fiction"Elara? Earth to Elara! Come back to the atmosphere, please."Maya’s voice cut through the fog in my brain like a foghorn.I blinked rapidly, the world snapping back into sharp, painful focus. I was still standing in the hallway, my hand white-knuckled on my bag strap."He's coming this way," Maya whispered, leaning in with theatrical dread."The Nose-Wiper is on the move. He’s got that 'I’m about to say something poetic' look on his face. Prepare for impact."I looked back toward the oak tree. The dark figure I’d been staring at—the one I was certain was Kael—stepped out of the long shadows. My heart did a violent somersault.I took a half-step forward, his name already forming on my lips like a prayer. Then the figure stepped into the harsh afternoon light. It was just one of the groundskeepers.A tall, lanky man in a navy jumpsuit, carrying a coil of heavy industrial rope.No silver-flecked eyes. No quiet, dangerous presence.Just a weary, sun-be
