Serena's POV I got back to the campus with an extra spring in my step. I'd successfully broken the bond between me and Josh. Now, I could focus on people that were worth my energy. At some point, I would make Josh and Mira pay for what they did. I didn't know how or when I'd revenge yet, but I would find a way to do it. That was a promise I'd made to myself, and I would do everything to fulfill it. I got to my dorm and found Priscilla on her bed, phone in one hand, legs crossed under her. She looked up the second I stepped inside. “Did you hear?” she said. “Your mate got rushed to the clinic. I heard someone say he was just training when he fell and started groaning." I dropped my bag onto my bed and sat. “That's none of my business. He can die if he likes." Her brows shot up. “None of your business? He’s your mate.” “He’s not my mate anymore.” I pulled off my jacket and tossed it aside. From the corner of my eye, I noticed Mira's bed was empty. Yeah, Mira should take care of

Mira's POVI sat beside Josh’s bed, watching his chest heave. He hadn't moved since I came in. The monitors on his bedside beeped slowly. The moment I got back to the campus after leaving Aunt Michelle's house, I heard that Josh was unconscious in the clinic. I came here right away and I hadn't left since I came.I tried not to think about my conversation with Aunt Michelle while sitting next to Josh. She let me know the people I thought were my parents didn't really give birth to me. But she didn't let me know how to find my real parents. It would have been great if she knew where the orphanage was. I would have gone back and tried to figure out who dropped me off in the first place.Questions rumbled in my mind. Were my real parents alive? Did they still remember or they didn't care anymore? And what about my real parents linked me to the fire visions and manifestations I'd been experiencing.A sigh rolled off my lips. I would have gone to Alina to clarify these things, but now I ha

Serena's POVI stayed hidden behind the old crates, trying not to move. My legs had gone stiff from squeezing myself for so long in the cramped space.Vessa'd told me to wait here, that Bastian was coming to see her."Be at alert," she'd told me.I was ready. The shed smelled of wet wood and rusted metal. The wind kept whipping against the door, making the whole place creak.Vessa stood just outside the door, her arms crossed above her chest. She constantly adjusted her hair as the wind kept blowing it.I was about to ask her when Bastian would show up when I heard the footsteps. It approached the shed quickly. I swallowed. It was almost time for action.“Did you talk to him?” Bastian's voice was gruff.“Yeah, and he said no.”There was a long moment of silence that felt extra uncomfortable for me in this dark, cramped shed."You didn't try to convince him, did you? I knew you weren't going to make a strong attempt to convince him.""I tried my best, but he wasn't having it. I even go

Mira's POV I was dozing off at Josh's bedside when I heard footsteps at the door. My eyes flipped open right away. Caden said he would be back after his training. That should be him. But it wasn't him. Tyrell stepped in, adjusting the stethoscope on his neck. He glanced at me, then at Josh as he walked deeper into the ward. He came to Josh's bed and checked his vitals. "Did he make any movements? Or did you observe something?" "He spoke for a moment." "Oh, he did? Was he awake?" "I don't think he was. His eyes were closed and he said I shouldn't leave him. I wanted to come over to your office and tell you when it happened, but he didn't want me to leave." "I see," Tyrell said. He spent the next couple of minutes making notes and checking readings from the monitor. Tyrell finally straightened and shook his his head. “This is not right." His tone sent a wave of fear through me. He looked disturbed. What wasn't right? I stood up so quickly the chair scraped against the floor.

Caden's POVI was back in the hostel after a quick shower to freshen up. The training session had been more demanding than ever. Everything we did on this campus got tougher by the day. My muscles still ached from the way I exerted them.I dabbed my face with a towel and reached into my mini closet for a clean shirt to put on.Mira would be expecting me at the clinic already. I was dressing up when Tyrell walked into the dorm."Guys, listen up." He banged on a bed frame until he got a couple of heads to turn in his direction.I watched him keenly, wondering what he was up to. He wasn't a student. I'd never seen him in this form.“What is happening on this campus right now is unacceptable. The organising council has turned this competition into something else. You were supposed to face your fellow students, but now you're facing beasts of different kinds."I noticed more heads turning in Tyrell's direction."Now, we're recording deaths, we're seeing terrible injuries. I know this becaus

Caden's POVI stared at the words on the screen with raised brows. Why did he want to see me?~Maybe he thinks I started the protest.~"That's Tyrell's case to answer," I muttered.I slipped my phone back in my pocket and started walking toward the admin block. The screams of humans and beasts continued to fill my ears as I headed to Lord Veron's office. The adrenaline of the fight had worn of slight and I began to feel some pains in my body. My knuckles stung where I had hit the guard. I flexed my hand and kept walking. The front steps of the administration block came into view. Two guards stood by the door, holding their batons."Go back!" They yelled."Lord Veron invited me.""You're lying!"I pulled out my phone and showed them the text. They relented and let me through. I knocked on the door. The response came right away. “Enter.”I turned the handle, stepped inside, and closed the door behind me.Lord Veron sat behind his desk. The papers in front of him were neat. His hands wer

Mira's POV"What's wrong?" Caden asked after he finished. "You look like something is bothering."I took a deep breath. “I need to get Josh off campus.”Caden frowned. “Right now?”"Yes. Tyrell told me the treatments aren’t working. He said it’s not a medical problem. I have to take Josh to Alina. She’s the only one who might know what to do.”Caden shook his head. “No, no, that’s not a good idea. Beasts are ravaging the campus right now. Students are shifting to fight back. It’s dangerous out there.”“I know it’s dangerous. But leaving him here is worse. He’s been like this for too long. If I wait any longer, I don’t know if he’ll wake up at all.""But you can't risk your well-being for him.""I have to take the risk. He would do the same for me."Caden's face clouded a bit as I said that. He looked at Josh’s still face, then back at me. His jaw was tight."What do you want me to do now?"“Please,” I said. “I can’t just sit here and do nothing. Help me get him out."Caden was quiet f

Lord Aldric's POVI paced my office while holding a glass of wine. Orven’s words replayed in my mind as I took every step. The Last Guardian would come to me, he had said. He said it would happen soon, that all the elements of the earth would conspire to make the person come to me.Days had turned into weeks. Nothing. No appearance at my office to announce the Last Guardian's arrival. I was waiting in vain.I rubbed my forehead with my free hand and my palm came away with sweat. After all the troubles I went through to find the first Elders, I shouldn't be suffering to find the Last Guardian. It was supposed to be easy.I clenched my jaws, fighting back the urge to smash my wine glass against the wall.Where the hell is the Last Guardian?I thought about calling Orven. Maybe he would have an explanation for why the Last Guardian hadn't showed up yet.A sharp knock sounded on the door."Come in."One of my guards stepped in and bowed low. He looked nervous. That alone told me he was ab

Caden's POVI sat near the middle section of the packed hall. My eyes stung as I processed my father’s words. The path to the Sentinels Accord was closed. Permanently. Just like that. Why would he do this to us?All the training. All the bruises. All the nights we pushed ourselves past the point of exhaustion. All the people who had died in the tournament. It meant nothing now.I looked around at the faces near me. Some students stared at the floor. Others clenched their fists. A few looked like they were about to cry but were too proud to let it show. Every single one of us had come here with the same dream. Now that dream was gone.My father adjusted his coat and started walking toward the exit. The Seven followed close behind him. They were the reason no student could protest anymore. We'd read so much about them. We knew what they could do. They were our role models. The hall remained silent as Father headed to the door. I watched his back as he got closer to the exit. Somethi

Lord Aldric's POVI settled into the lodging set aside for me on the campus. I didn't visit often, but whenever I did, I always stayed in this luxury room.I poured myself a glass of water and sat down on the plush couch. As much as I would have liked to take some wine or whiskey, I needed to be clear headed for the rest of the day.For the first time since the report of the riot reached me, I felt my shoulders loosen. My son was alive. That alone was enough to make me feel at easy. Also, we were able to quell the violence with ease. I expected the students to put up more resistance, but they stopped fighting easily. Maybe it was true that they weren't interested in fighting in the first place.I dropped the glass of water and leaned my back on the couch. I thought about Caden standing up to me in the hall.In the hall I'd kept my face hard. But inside, I was pleased Caden was man enough to stand and speak with clarity and courage.I was proud of him. He would be a great leader one da
