Mira's POVThe instructor opened the first slip."Adrian Garrick from Duskwall votes no to Mira Larsen staying."I squeezed my eyes shut. Things had started on an awful note already."Lisa Morgan from Eastmark votes yes to Mira Larsen."Yes! Maybe there was hope after all.He read out the next vote. Vessa. Against me.I shrugged. I didn't expect anything else from her. All hope wasn't lost. I might still get enough votes to secure a tie. After all Josh had not voted. Then I heard his name."Josh Calloway from Westhill votes no to Mira Larsen staying."I felt the stillness land in my chest before I fully processed it. I turned my head. Josh was sitting at the end of the panel table with his eyes pointed down at the surface in front of him. His jaw was tight. He wouldn't look at me.Josh? How could you?I looked away from him. A tear slipped down my cheek. I couldn't believe he could do this to me. I was losing by a huge margin. There was no hope for me now.But surprisingly, the next

Mira's POVThe dorm was still dark when I got off the bed. I put on my training gear and kicked my feet into a pair of sneakers. My movements were subtle. I tried not to disturb anyone. Most of the girls were still sleeping."Mira?"I looked over my shoulder. Serena was propped up on one elbow, squinting at me. Her hair was pushed to one side and she looked half asleep."Go back to sleep," I whispered. She looked to the window and back to me. "What are you doing up? It's barely dawn.""I want to do a bit of training."She sat up a little more, her brows lifting. "Now? Who trains at this hour?""I have a session with Caden," I told her.Serena stared at me. The sleepiness left her face. "Seriously?""Yeah. He agreed to train with me."She was quiet for a moment, like she was waiting for me to say I was joking. When I didn't, she said, "How did you get him to agree to that?""I just asked him.""Just like that?""Yes," I shrugged. She shook her head slowly. "Mira, I have been around Cad

Caden's POVThe orientation hall was full by the time I arrived with Riven, Bastian and Cael. Candidates from every school was already seated or finding seats when we got there. We took seats near the middle section. Riven dropped into the chair beside me and Bastian took the one on my other side. Cael sat in front of us and immediately stretched his legs out under the seat ahead. The lead instructor stepped onto the platform. The noise in the room died down. Something about the way he stood up there made people stop talking without being asked."This competition is not just about trophies," he said. "It's not about rankings or school reputation or where your name ends up on a board."The hall was even more quiet than before."The winners of this competition will be inducted into the Sentinel Accord."Sentinel Accord...I'd heard the name before. Everyone had heard the name. It lived in old texts and in the conversations that adults had when they thought young people weren't listening

Caden's POVBastian drummed his fingers on his thighs. "I got the candidate from Stormveil.""You'll win," Riven said, not looking up from his phone."Obviously. I'm just noting the level."Cael was cleaning his boots on the other side of the room. He didn't comment. He'd been paired with Josh Calloway of Westhill. Cael had the toughest matchup in our group. My first round opponent was from Duskwall. Senior division, ranked third in their school's internal assessments according to the information sheet attached to the pairing. Strong record. Clean technique.I would win. That wasn't confidence for its own sake, it was just how I'd been trained to assess a situation. I had the information I needed and had done the preparation. I would go in, I would read the fight quickly, and I would end it.What I was actually thinking about was the training session tomorrow morning.I couldn't stop thinking of what else to teach her. What she still needed. What would actually make a difference in th

Mira's POV I pressed myself against the wall and tried not to breathe too loud. My heart slammed against my ribs. They were talking about me. They had to be. The seal. The shift. It matched everything Alina had told me. Yes, they didn't mention my name, but I was the only beastless Omega around. Nobody else was here without a beast. None that I've met so far. I leaned in closer. My shoulder brushed the wall and I steadied myself. I needed a name. A face. Anything to hold on to. The voices dropped even lower. I strained to hear them but I could only catch fragments now. Something about timing. Something about the competition. Then a word I couldn't make out, followed by silence. I looked at the door again. What if I went in and checked who was talking about me? A wave of fear swept through me. I had no idea what was waiting beyond the door. The last thing I wanted was to walk into a dangerous situation. My curiosity was stronger than my desire for self preservation. I took on
