Caden's POVRodney from Eastmark was big. That was the first thing I noticed when he walked into the arena. He was broad across the shoulders with a thick neck and muscular arms. He also had a reputation for injuring his opponents. I'd heard his name twice before the pairings even went up. They told stories about how he always did crazy damage with his horns.I wasn't fazed, though. As far as I was concerned, nobody in this competition was good enough to scare me.I stood there in the ring, looking around me. The arena was full. Every seat in the viewing area was taken. I could feel the energy coming off the crowd before the match even started.Rodney looked at me from across the ring. He cracked his knuckles and planted his feet wide. His nose flared as he glared at me.I saw hatred in his gaze. He wanted to take me down.~You're no match for me.~The instructor gave the word for us to start, and Rodney shifted immediately. It happened in a flash. His body expanded outward like somet

Mira's POVThe training ground was cold when I arrived. The sky was still the deep blue that came just before proper dawn. My breath came out in small clouds.Caden was already there. As usual. I wasn't sure how he did it but he always got here before. It was crazy because my dorm was closer to the training ground. "Congratulations on your win yesterday," I said to him He shrugged. "Yeah, thank you. Let's get to work."We went straight to work. He made me run the footwork patterns from the beginning, but faster this time. He called direction changes without warning and I responded before I finished thinking about it.By the end of the first twenty minutes I was sweating through my training gear.He pulled me into close-range drill work next. The kind that required one of us to move inside the other's guard and apply a hold or a redirect."You always drop your left shoulder every time you go for the body," he said. "It lets your opponent know your move before it arrives.""I didn't

Josh's POVI stepped into the ring for my fight, waiting for my opponent to arrive. I scanned the front rows and saw Serena. She sat close to the ring barrier with her hands clasped together in front of her. She saw me looking at her and blew me a kiss.I smiled. I couldn't help it. She had that effect on me every single time. Ever since we bonded, she never failed to make me happy. I looked away when I heard cheers from the crowd. .My opponent was here. He was tall and thin. I hadn't seen him even once during the camp. Not at orientation, not in the dining hall, not in any of the sessions I’d attended. He must have kept himself entirely to himself. That told me something. Fighters who stayed invisible in social spaces were usually hard to beat in the ring. The instructor called us to the center. "Match ends on surrender or incapacitation. Fighters, are you ready?""Yes!" We chorused."Start!"The kid shifted without hesitation. I watched his body morph into a black bear in a blink

Caden's POVThe training ground was empty.I’d come out early, before anyone else was up, and I had the space entirely to myself. That was what I needed. No friends chatting or arguing when I needed to focus. I started with flying drills and moved through them until my body was warm. Then I went into the striking sequences, working both sides, making sure neither arm was dominant enough to be predictable. My mind kept going back to that training session with Mira. To the moment I’d leaned in and let my lips touch her cheek.I'd felt her breath catch. I felt the tension move through her body. She felt it too. I'd seen it in her face, in the way she hadn't moved, in the way her eyes stayed on mine. She wanted it.And I cleared my throat and stepped away like some kind of coward.I did a roundhouse kick and reset my stance.I should have kissed her properly. Should have closed that last inch of distance and found out how she tasted. The thought of it sat in my chest like something with

Serena's POVThe dorm was quiet when I walked in.Most of the girls were still at the dining hall or gathered in the common room down the corridor. Mira was on her bed, though. She sat on the edge of her mattress with her back partially turned to me. Her training jacket was off and her shirt was pulled down at the left shoulder. I walked closer, wondering what she was up to. As I moved nearer to the bed, I noticed her presssing a small cloth against her shoulder and dabbing at something on her skin.I stopped walking and observed her more. She hadn't heard me come in. Her attention was entirely on whatever she was attending to. I could see the tension in her back, the way she was holding herself slightly rigid.I took two steps closer. The cloth came away from her shoulder and I saw it. A deep cut. Not the kind of injury that came from a training drill or a match. I’d seen enough fight injuries over the past weeks to know the difference. This was a blade wound."Mira!" I yelled out

Caden's POVI walked off the training ground and dropped onto the bench beside Riven. My arms were tired in a way that felt productive. I'd pushed hard this session, longer than I usually went alone, and the fatigue in my shoulders and legs was insane. Bastian was on the grass a few feet away, flat on his back with his hands behind his head, staring up at the sky like he had no concerns in the world."Caden, have you heard?" Bastian said to me suddenly."What?""There's a party tomorrow night," he said.I reached for my water bottle. "Where?""Common room in the east wing. Someone from Stormveil is putting it together. Word has been going around since this afternoon." He tilted his head to look at me. "We should go."Riven made a sound beside me. "We're in the middle of a competition.""Which is exactly why we should go. We've been training every day since we got here. One evening won't break anything.""One evening of poor sleep before a match absolutely can break something.""Nobod

Mira's POVI got back to the dorm from my stroll and climbed on my bed. The dorm was silent by this time of the night, except for the gentle snoring sound from several beds away.Everyone was asleep except me.My shoulder throbbed. The pain seemed to get worse with each passing hour. I tried to distract my mind from the pain by thinking about Caden. He'd seen me during my stroll, and I saw concern in his eyes. He knew something was wrong and tried to get me to talk. I had to move away from him quickly. I was afraid staring at his eyes would make me say things I didn't want to.I could imagine him reaching out to touch me, making me spellbound. That was the way his touch had taken me out of my mind during our last training. We were so close to kissing . . . Ugh!The pain in my shoulder stung harder. Thoughts of Caden melted from my mind. I shifted onto my right side and tried to find the right sleeping posture to avoid the discomfort.I pulled the blanket back up and thought about wha

Vessa's POVThe alarm on my phone buzzed at ten.I got up and silenced before it could wake the other girls up. It was clearly lights out and the dorm was full of snoring, boring teen girls.Well, there was a party tonight and the cool girls were invited.I brought out the outfit I prepared before I went to bed. A silver mini dress with a low neckline. I dressed quickly and shook my hair out around my shoulders. In the next bed, Kayla was still sleeping. I walked over and tapped her. Her eyes opened halfway."It's time," I said quietly. She was up in under a minute. On the next bed, Priscilla was already awake, all dressed and lacing her heels. She looked up and saw me."Is that beastless girl invited to the party, too?" She asked."I don't know. Why did you ask?""I saw her sneaking out of the hostel about thirty minutes ago.""Nah, I don't think she's going to the party."Betty was the organiser of the party. There was no way she would invite that weak Omega to the event. I knew th

Josh's POVI was dressing up for the day's activity when Serena showed up in my dorm. Her hair looked disheveled.I looked down at my watch. 6:45. She'd never come to see me this early before. I knew right away something was wrong."What happened?" I asked."I woke up this morning and didn't see Mira in the dorm.""What?""Yeah. I asked around and I found someone who saw her heading to the medic center. You know the way she was stubborn about going there. I'm worried something serious must have happened for her to go there in the middle of the night.”A wave of fear gripped me. What if something happened to her? How would I tell Mother?I wished she had just listened when I asked her to leave."Stay calm," I told Serena. "Let's go to the medic room to see how she's doing.""Okay."I put on my jacket and left the dorm with Serena. We got to the clinic and I knocked on the door.A few seconds passed. Then I heard footsteps from behind the door. The door opened and a doctor stepped out.

Mira's POV"Have they gone?" I asked as Tyrell came back in from the corridor and shut the door behind him. "Yes," he said.I let out a slow breath and stared at the ceiling. "Thank you. For checking with me first."He moved to the tray beside my bed and began arranging the supplies he would need for the morning check up. His movements were unhurried and precise the way they always were. "That's standard practice," he said simply. "Patients decide who comes in.""Not everywhere. I was injured at Ironridge and it wasn't like that." He glanced at me briefly. "Here, it is."The pain in my shoulder had reduced to a dull consistent throb instead of the sharp burning that had nearly taken my legs out from under me earlier this morning. I was still weak. But I felt better.Tyrell pulled on his gloves and came to my bedside. He began carefully removing the dressing from my shoulder. I kept my eyes on the wall and focused on breathing evenly."You can look away if you need to," he said."I'
