Old scars

Theo's assessment came in on a Monday. Not at the end of the two weeks. On day eleven. Which meant he had found everything he needed to find three days early and had spent the remaining time making sure he had not missed anything. That was Theo.He came to my office at eight, closed the door, sat down, and put a bound document on the desk.Forty-seven pages.I looked at it and then at him."Summary first," I said.He nodded."Viktor Ren's network is what he said it is," Theo said. "Four markets, eastern corridors, distribution infrastructure that took nine years to build and has the scars to prove it." He paused. "Three of the four markets are clean. Standard operational risk, nothing we cannot manage." He paused again. "The fourth market has a complication."I looked at him."What kind of complication?" I said."A prior arrangement," he said. "Someone already operating in that market who has a connection to Ren's network that predates his approach to us." He paused. "The connection i

Let's go for third round

Viktor Ren arrived at exactly four o'clock. No lawyer this time.Just him and the security man who had sat at the table on Tuesday without moving for two hours. The lawyer's absence meant something before he sat down. Lawyers were for formal proceedings. Coming without one meant he had decided this meeting was a different kind of conversation.Good.So had we.Raymond showed them in and we were already seated this time. Dee at the head of the table and me to his right and Theo at the far end with his tablet closed in front of him which was significant because Theo always had his tablet open.Closed meant he did not need notes for this.Closed meant he already knew everything worth knowing.Ren sat down and looked at us and the almost smile was already there before anyone spoke."You found it," he said. Not a question. Not an apology.Just a statement. Clean and direct and carrying within it the particular quality of a man who had been waiting for a specific thing to happen and was rel

New Week, New Move

Monday started with Theo already at his desk.I knew because I arrived at seven fifteen, and his light was on, and there was a coffee cup outside his door that Claire had left, which meant he had been there long enough that she had noticed and responded accordingly.I knocked. He looked up."How far?" I said."Eighteen pages," he said. "It is dense.""Is it consistent?" I said.He thought about it."So far," he said carefully. "Which either means it is genuine or it has been prepared by someone very good.""Which do you think?" I said.He looked at the document."I think it is genuine," he said. "The inconsistencies in a prepared document are always in the details. The small things that do not quite connect." He turned a page. "So far everything connects.""Keep going," I said.He was already reading before I closed the door.***The week moved differently from the weeks before it.Not slowly. Not fast. Just differently. With the particular quality of a week where something significan

The right move

The lawyers spoke on Friday morning.Ours called his at nine. The call lasted twenty minutes. When it ended, our senior partner called Dee directly and said four words. We are moving forward.Dee texted me from his office, and I read it at my desk, put the phone down, looked at the city, and let the weight of it settle.Viktor Ren was in.Not officially. Not yet. The final document was still weeks away, and Theo would be watching every step between here and there. Adaeze had her own view on certain clauses that needed reviewing before any signature went anywhere near any page. But the direction was set.We were moving forward.***I told Nadia at ten.Not the full picture. The professional outline. A new strategic partnership expanding the organisation's reach into four markets. Eastern corridors. Distribution infrastructure. A significant development for the Ashford Group, to be announced formally once the documents were finalised. She listened with her hands folded and her eyes read

The furthest

Sienna arrived at seven fifty five.Five minutes early which told me she had been thinking about this since Friday and had decided that showing up on time was not enough for a Monday morning that mattered.I was already at my desk. She came in and sat down across from me and looked at me with those eyes that had changed since the gala. Not softened exactly. Clarified. Like something that had been running at too high a temperature had finally cooled to the right one.She had a notebook.Paper. Not a tablet. A real notebook with a pen clipped to the cover.I looked at it."I think better on paper," she said."So do I," I said. She opened it.I turned my screen toward her so she could see the programme outline I had been building since Friday evening when I had come home from the restaurant and sat in the study for two hours and put everything Gerald Morrison had said into a structure that made sense. She read it.She did not say anything for a full three minutes. That was longer than mo

I will be there wherever you need

She called on Wednesday. Not the press line. My direct number.I did not know how she had the number until Claire told me afterward that it had been in a foundation press release from three months ago, a contact number that should have been Claire's and had been mine by an administrative error that nobody had caught because nobody had called it until now.Her name was Priya Okafor. She introduced herself quickly and professionally. Investigative journalist, independent, working on a piece about identity and reinvention in the business world. She had been following the foundation launch coverage and had some questions about Iris Ashford's background.I listened to all of it.Then I said, "Ms. Okafor. How did you get this number?"She told me.I looked at the city outside my window and thought about the three months that number had been sitting in a press release and the fact that Priya Okafor was the first person to use it and what that said about how thorough she was."What would you

Shift

The east side was moving.Theo had flagged it three days earlier and Dee had told me on Friday morning and now it was Sunday evening and Dee was getting ready to go to the first room and I was in the kitchen pretending to read something on my tablet and not reading it.He came downstairs at seven.Dark shirt. Jacket. The particular settled way he carried himself when he was going somewhere that required everything he had.Jonas was outside with the car.Two security men were already at the location. He came to the kitchen and looked at me and I looked back at him and neither of us said the thing we were both thinking which was that these rooms were necessary and that necessary did not mean comfortable."How long?" I said."Two hours," he said. "Maybe three."I nodded. He came and stood beside me and I looked up at him and he put his hand on my face briefly and I leaned into it for one second and then he straightened up and picked up his jacket."Lock the house," he said."Dee," I said

A girl

The news sat inside me differently from anything else. Not loudly. Not the way big things sometimes announced themselves with a kind of internal noise that took days to settle. It sat quietly. The way certain truths sat when they were not surprises exactly but confirmations. Things you had not known you already knew until you heard them out loud.A girl.I thought about it at my desk at nine in the morning with the Morrison notes open in front of me and the city outside and everything moving around me the way it always moved.A girl who was going to come into a world where her mother had two names and a rebuilt hand and a foundation with her name on the wall and a story that was twenty-eight days away from being told correctly.I picked up my pen.I could not concentrate on the Morrison notes.I put the pen down.I sat back and looked at the ceiling and let myself have five minutes of just knowing it before I went back to being someone who had a full day in front of her.Five minutes.

Adaeze

She arrived at nine on Tuesday. Not at the office. At the house. That was her preference, and I had learned that when Adaeze had a preference, it was worth respecting because her preferences were always purposeful. She sat at the kitchen table with a folder and a coffee Claire had sent ahead, and she looked at both of us the way she looked at everything, directly and without unnecessary preamble."The case is moving faster than I expected," she said. "Both angles simultaneously.""You said that on the phone," Dee said. "What does faster mean specifically?"She opened the folder."The criminal angle," she said. "The chain of causation is clean. The storage yard is documented. Your account is documented." She looked at me. "The source has been identified, and their actions are on record." She paused. "The prosecutor's office has been in contact."I looked at her."Already?" I said."They reached out Friday," she said. "They have been building something independently. Our documentation a

Twenty Days

I called Priya Okafor that afternoon. She picked up on the second ring which told me she had been waiting for it."Mrs. Ashford," she said."Ms. Okafor," I said. "I need to adjust the timeline."A pause. Careful. Not alarmed. She was too good to be alarmed before she had the information."Adjust how?" she said."Twenty days instead of thirty," I said. "Something has moved in the legal case. I cannot control the timeline from that side anymore." I paused. "But twenty days gives you the same story. Everything I promised."She was quiet for a moment."What moved?" she said."I cannot tell you that yet," I said. "In twenty days I will tell you everything."Another pause. Longer."Mrs. Ashford," she said. "I agreed to thirty days because you told me the story was worth waiting for. You are now asking me to compress that by ten days." She paused. "What I need to know is whether twenty days gives me the same access.""The same access," I said. "And a conversation with me directly. On the rec
