I tossed on the mattress, the pounding behind my temples making it feel as though my head were about to split wide open.I groaned in my sleep, shifting uncomfortably against the sheets, when a soft voice broke through the haze.“Are you okay?”Maddox? I blinked, trying to clear the fog... no, that definitely didn't sound like Maddox.“Jason...” the voice called again, finally pulling me out of my half-conscious state.“Charles...” I muttered, forcing my heavy eyelids open.“Hey... you’re awake,” Charles said, his voice calm and coaxing as he sat down on the edge of my bed.I pushed myself upright, the room spinning around me so violently that I could barely keep both eyes focused.“Are you okay?” He asked gently. I barely had the strength to nod before the rich, soothing aroma of hot chamomile tea drifted toward my nose. “Here, drink this. It’ll help with the hangover.”I wrapped both hands tightly around the warm ceramic mug, bringing it to my lips and taking a slow, cautious sip.C

I stared at my reflection in the full-length mirror, adjusting the collar of my shirt. It had been months since I last saw my mother, and now I was going to face her right before her wedding anniversary gala tomorrow. I used to adore her. Hell, a part of me still did. But seeing her standing beside Jason’s father—a man Aunt Sabrina had repeatedly warned was nothing more than a silver-tongued gold digger just felt wrong. It had placed an unbridgeable distance between us. Knock. Knock. I turned toward the open doorway. Standing right outside was Jason, dressed in dark trousers and a fitted blue t-shirt, his hair artfully tousled, those warm hazel eyes fixated on me. “I’m ready,” he said, his voice quiet. Giving my jacket one last adjustment, I walked toward the door, slowing my steps as I drew closer to him. The subtle, familiar scent of his cologne filled my senses, instantly causing a familiar twitch beneath my briefs. “You owe me something, you know,” I growled low, my voice

I glanced in the rearview mirror as I put the car in park. Jason was still lying out across the backseat, having slept through almost the entire three-hour drive after what happened on the highway. His eyes slowly fluttered open, his gaze meeting mine in the glass. “We’re here...” I murmured, opening my door and stepping out into the driveway. Across the manicured lawn, my mother stepped out onto the porch, a bright, welcoming smile on her face, with her husband standing right beside her. I pointedly ignored them, turning back to watch Jason as he climbed out of the passenger side. As much as he tried to walk normally and act composed, it was clear as day that he was limping. “Maddox...” Mum called out as she hurried down the steps. Before I could pull back, she wrapped her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. She still smelled the same—a familiar perfume. Her long black hair was just like mine. She pulled back, her hands resting on my shoulders as her eyes scanned my

“I’m not wrong, though,” Aunt Sabrina continued, her piercing eyes holding my father across the table. “Otherwise, there’s no way you’d be sitting here among us at this table.”“Sabrina...” Mrs. Donovan called out softly, her voice strained as she tried to diffuse the rising hostility, her expression pleading with the woman to stop.“What? Don’t I even get a say in my own late brother's home anymore?” She spat, holding back the venom that threatened to spill over—though she kept her glare somewhat restrained, thanks to Maddox sitting directly across from her.At least I was aware of that much. She despised Mrs. Donovan just as deeply as she despised my father, a hatred that had clearly festered the moment they got married. But because of Maddox, she usually kept her claws tucked in towards his mother.“Late brother...” Mrs. Donovan’s soft voice sliced cleanly through the heavy silence. “And I won't entertain any more disrespect at this table, Sabrina. I appreciate you coming to celebr

I swallowed the last bite of food on the plate under Jason's watchful eye. He stood a few feet away like a loyal security guard who had sworn on his life not to abandon his post.“Do you want more?” He asked softly, his hazel eyes searching my face. “You’ve barely eaten a proper meal all day...”He was still wearing that mask of brave confidence he had walked in with, even though I had thoroughly shattered it just minutes ago.“I’m not a glutton,” I grunted, setting the fork down.“You don’t have to be a glutton to nourish your body...” He shot back sharply, turning on his heel and pulling the bedroom door open. He looked back over his shoulder, tilting his head toward the hallway.I pushed myself off the edge of the mattress. A deal was a deal. As he had so boldly negotiated, he was going to be completely submissive to me all through tomorrow night... which technically meant he possessed my cooperation for the rest of this evening.I strode past him, and Jason pulled the heavy door s
