(Vera POV)The door opened. I stared at it from the bed, my entire body rigid. For one wild second, I considered hiding under the blanket.“Brilliant, Vera. Absolutely brilliant. Nobody would notice the fully grown woman-shaped lump trembling beneath expensive royal bedding.” Xela taunted, and I wanted to kill her at that moment. The first person through the door was Sebastian. Silas entered behind him. They were still talking about some office matters. “I told the Council we can review the reports tomorrow. If Elder Marcus sends another messenger tonight, I'm throwing him off the—”Sebastian stopped in his tracks. Silas nearly walked into him. I stared at them. They stared at me. Nobody moved for a few seconds. Then Sebastian's eyes narrowed.“Vera?” The confusion was clear in his voice. I lifted one hand weakly.“Hello.” Silas looked around the room. Then at me. Then, at the locked door, they'd apparently just opened it with their key.“This is our room.”“I gathered that,” I

(Vera POV)Doctor Elowen examined the puncture first. Then she checked my eyes, my pulse, my temperature, and my blood. The vial of my blood surprised her a bit, but she didn’t share much with us. The longer she worked, the more serious her expression became. And I didn’t like that. “If something isn’t right, then you can tell me… I am strong enough to bear it.” I answered, and she shook her head in no. She didn't answer immediately.“What is it?” I asked after a minute. “The compound is called Moonfire.”Sebastian's expression changed, and Silas cursed under his breath. I looked between them. “You know it?”Doctor Elowen answered.“It's prohibited.”“Why?”“It was originally developed decades ago to stimulate reproductive cycles in wolves suffering from certain fertility complications.”My stomach turned even though I was already enduring its effects. “But… The concentrated version was abused.”Her expression hardened as she explained further. I clutched the blanket hard and us

(Vera POV)By afternoon, I was allowed to return to my own wing. Silas wanted to send guards with me, but I refused. It would attract too much attention. Sebastian suggested plainclothes council soldiers, but I didn’t agree to that either. When I reached my corridor, Rafael was waiting outside my room holding a paper bag. My steps slowed. He saw me, and relief crossed his face immediately. “Finally! I have been waiting for ages.” He stood up and dusted his clothes. “What happened to you?” He asked when he saw my pale face. “Good afternoon to you too.” I greeted him in a dry tone. “Vera.” He looked genuinely worried.“You disappeared last night.”“I got sick.”His expression sharpened.“Sick how? Why didn’t you tell anyone? Is everything alright now?” he shot so many questions at once. I hesitated, not because I distrusted Rafael. If anything, he had become one of the easiest people to be around since I'd arrived. He didn't demand anything. Didn't hover. Didn't turn every conver

(Vera POV)The first contestants went quickly. One admitted she'd entered the Games because her father promised her land. A white glow appeared, which meant she was telling the truth. Another claimed she had never sabotaged anyone. But the red glow appeared. The audience erupted, and she lost points. Another was asked whether she believed she'd make a good Luna. She answered yes, but the glow turned red, and she flinched hard and looked devastated. Not by the lost points. The fact is that somewhere inside herself, she didn't believe her own answer. This trial wasn't exposing secrets. It was exposing wounds. I hated it. Then Mara Solis was called. As soon as she took the seat, an eerie silence fell over the court. She drank the liquid and looked towards the judges. The judges asked whether she had ever deliberately endangered another contestant.“No.” The glow turned white, and she relaxed a bit. Then Kira Bloodthorne stood to choose Mara's contestant question. I immediately disl

(Vera POV)The trial continued, but everything changed. People watched me differently. Some with admiration. Some with suspicion. Some with fear. I could live with all three.By sunset, the rankings were announced. Mara, Nyra, Evelis, and Kira survived, including me. Others weren't as fortunate. Two contestants fell beneath the qualification line. One of them was escorted out crying. Another one stood completely still. No tears, no begging, just resignation. I watched the guards take them through the eastern doors. Not the public exit. My pulse changed. Xela noticed it too. “Different route.”0“Yes.”Yesterday, I might not have cared. Now I watched everything. One guard touched the woman's back. The sleeve of his uniform shifted. A symbol flashed on his wrist. A split crescent mark was present on it. Half gold, Half silver. My blood went cold. Then the doors closed. I didn't move. Didn't react. Didn't chase. That was exactly what whoever ran the laboratories would expect from someon
