Chapter 1: Kickoff Tension The living room smelled of cold beer, pizza boxes, and the faint musk of two grown men on a Sunday night. Mike reclined on the big sectional couch, legs spread wide in his gray sweatpants, while his best friend and neighbor Derek sat right beside him. The football game blared on the massive TV, players smashing into each other under the bright stadium lights, but neither man was really watching anymore. Mike was thirty-eight, married fifteen years, thick muscular build from years at the construction yard. His wife was out of town visiting family, leaving him alone with the game and Derek whose own wife was working the night shift at the hospital.
