RenataMy face burned intensely, like someone had heated up the room. My vision tilted, my mind spinning as I tried to understand how my body was reacting. It wasn't just pain. It had transmitted from pain into a jolting feeling that made the pain strange and unbearable.I stepped back, holding my stomach tightly, as my eyes began to drip with tears without me actually crying. My eyes had turned so red I couldn't tell if Mr. Cole was still there or not.I got my answer when he poured another glass of wine on my face, which increased the burn intensely. I didn't even know when I screamed out. What he had put in my drink wasn't poison. It was a jolt serum. I had only read about it in books, used specifically to totally embarrass your enemy. Which was exactly what Mr. Cole had done to me, because in seconds people gathered around me trying to steady me.I couldn't hold myself up. The pain was funny and hurtful at the same time, making my body jerk in the most humiliating way."What shoul

RenataI was just glad it was over. Drent had been out through most of the day, which gave me more time to pack my things.I was leaving back home today. The one week I had agreed to stay and meet his dad had elapsed, and now it was time to go back to my own world, back to high school, where I was already known as the desperate girl who had latched onto Drent. It took intense boldness to even want to show my face in that school after the bullying I had faced from the popular girls, and now that I was associated with the popular crowd, I knew it could only get worse.Another reason why I was so eager to return to Philz High was because I really wanted to graduate next year. I couldn't imagine repeating a whole extra year.Yes, I knew I had accidentally injured Mr. Theodore when he tried to force himself on me and he had sworn never to sign my screening form and would make sure I repeated. But I thought that maybe if I showed my face in school and talked to Mr. Peterson, he would speak

DrentI caught up with her outside before she could put any real distance between us."Peach."She kept walking."Renata."She stopped but didn't turn around, and I could see the tension sitting across her shoulders from where I stood. I moved to her side and lowered my voice."I am sorry about what happened in there."She turned slowly, and the look on her face was not anger exactly. It was something more tired than that, something closer to a person who had been running a race they never agreed to enter."Why can't he just believe you?" she asked quietly. "Maybe it is me. Maybe I am too shy. Maybe I do not come across the way I am supposed to." She shook her head slightly. "I am trying, Drent. I am genuinely trying every single time, and every single time your father finds a new way to make me feel like I am nothing."I didn't interrupt her. She deserved the space to say it."This is not working," she continued, her voice dropping lower. "I am clearly not working. Whatever you need

Renata"Oh my God, it's Drent Ardent!" one of the girls in the hall screamed, and the whole corridor literally erupted in gasps and admiration.I still stood there wondering what he had come to do, and so did Theodore, Finn, and the twenty soccer players who had been about to launch at me.Drent winked at me with one eye, the kind of wink that said yes, I came to rescue you, before he began to walk in."What is going on here? Why are you guys harassing my girlfriend?" Gosh, he said it out loud. It was the one thing I didn't want anyone to remember in the midst of all this chaos, but he didn't care what they thought ."She trashed our locker room," one of the football players said."No I didn't. I was framed.""Tell that to the evidence," Finn shot at me, wanting all of this to topple on my head as his father stood behind him smiling like their plan had worked."That evidence was forged. I didn't do it.""It's okay." Drent said it, and somehow the whole place went still again. He walke

DrentLike I always said, I never pressure what is mine, and I had finally made her agree to go to the party. The best part, the part I loved most, was teasing her and watching her get flustered about it.I ordered my men to take both Theodore and his son home and handed Renata back her papers just as Javier's call came in. I stepped aside to answer it."Hey, what's up, bro?" Javier's voice came through with a noisy background behind it."I'm good, man. Where the hell are you?""I'm at the ball, man. Been here since seven. Where are you and Renata? You do know your father is here, right? This is the best possible time for you guys to put on that performance."He was right. I had been so busy pulling that stunt with Renata that I hadn't realised how late we already were."I'll be there now, bro. Just keep an eye on my father," I said, heading down the stairs to get my things together. As I descended I called my driver to go and pick Renata up, since I had other things to sort first. Af
