Where Love Begins Quietly

The Poison of Small Things

The wedding did not feel like a beginning in the way people usually imagine beginnings, because there was no sudden shift in the air, no dramatic sense of transition from one life into another, only a quiet settling that seemed to extend naturally from everything that had already existed between Arman and Meher, as though the ceremony itself had not created anything new but had simply given structure to something that was already quietly in place. The day passed with a kind of soft simplicity that did not demand attention from anyone outside of it. There were familiar faces gathered in close spaces, conversations that never rose too loudly above the background of the moment, and the slow movement of rituals that felt less like performance and more like confirmation of something that did not need to be proven again. Marigold garlands hung loosely across the space, not arranged in excess, but present in a way that made the atmosphere feel warm rather than decorative, and the light that e

What Love Became

The night Arman returned home after several days of work travel, the house felt unchanged at first glance in the way that familiar spaces often do when they are entered without expectation, because everything appeared to be exactly where memory had left it, the soft glow of the hallway light still warm against the walls, the faint scent of evening tea lingering in the kitchen air, and the distant sound of movement upstairs where Zara was presumably settling into sleep, and yet even before he fully stepped inside, there was already a subtle unfamiliarity in the silence that he could not immediately define, not because anything was visibly different, but because the atmosphere itself seemed slightly slower in responding to his presence, as though the house required an extra moment to recognize him again after his absence.Meher appeared a few moments later, moving down the stairs in a way that looked normal in structure but slightly delayed in rhythm, as if each step was being completed

Where Silence Looks Guilty

It did not begin with suspicion, because suspicion requires something solid enough to stand on, and at that point in Arman’s life there was nothing solid left to hold onto except routine that still functioned on the surface even if it no longer felt entirely reliable underneath it.Meher was still there. That was the first fact. Not memory. Not interpretation.Fact.She moved through the house every day, she prepared food, she spoke to Zara, she maintained the rhythm of life in a way that made the world continue without visible collapse, and if someone were to look from the outside, nothing about her presence would suggest absence or instability or anything that could be mistaken for disappearance. And yet Arman had begun noticing something he could not ignore anymore. Not a change in her actions. But a change in the way her presence felt when he tried to hold it in his attention for longer than a passing moment. There were pauses now that did not belong to fatigue alone. There were se

When Grief Learns to Speak

Zara’s voice did not change in volume when she said it, and that was what stayed with Arman long after the moment itself had passed, because she had spoken in the same calm, ordinary tone she used for everything else in her small world, as if what she was saying belonged naturally inside the rhythm of the house and did not require emotional interpretation from anyone listening.“Mama said she doesn’t feel safe when you stay close to her anymore.”There was no hesitation in her voice, no awareness that the sentence might fracture something in the person hearing it, only the simple delivery of something she believed to be true, and for a second Arman did not respond at all, not because he did not hear her, but because the sentence did not immediately settle into meaning inside him, as though his mind had momentarily refused to accept the structure of it.Meher was in the kitchen at that time, the sound of water running faintly in the background, and the normality of that sound made every

The Town

Arman did not remember the walk back the way memory is supposed to preserve movement, because there were no clear steps that he could later place in order, only fragments of motion that returned to him in uneven pieces, like the sensation of wet ground beneath his feet, the distant sound of rain that no longer felt like weather but like something continuing inside his head, and the overwhelming weight of silence that followed him even when he was moving through it.When he reached the house, nothing about it looked different from how it had always looked before, and that normality struck him with a force that was almost unbearable, because the world was still functioning as though nothing inside it had shifted, as though the same rooms, the same air, the same quiet corners still belonged to the same version of life that had existed only hours earlier.Zara was asleep. That was the first thing he registered clearly. She was on the couch, curled beneath a blanket in a way that made her

Where Guilt Becomes Memory

Arman did not sleep that night in any way that could be described as rest, because even when his body remained still, his mind kept returning to the same unresolved loop of images and sentences that no longer behaved like memory but like fragments that refused to stabilize into a single coherent sequence, and every time he closed his eyes, he found himself back in the same space of uncertainty where nothing confirmed itself fully anymore.Zara was still asleep in the next room, and that fact alone became the only thing in the house that felt structurally unchanged, though even that stability did not bring comfort anymore, because he realized he was no longer able to distinguish whether stability itself meant safety or simply continuity without understanding.Meher was not present in the room, and yet her absence did not feel like absence in the usual sense, because it carried weight now, as if everything that had been said, everything that had been left unsaid, and everything that had

The New Doctor

Rain had a way of making Belle Vue Psychiatric Hospital feel older than it really was.Whenever storms rolled across the hills, the stone building seemed to retreat into another century altogether, as though the years themselves gathered quietly around its walls and refused to leave. Moisture darkened the gray bricks. Water slid down tall windows in endless silver trails. The iron gates groaned whenever the wind pushed against them, and the ancient oak trees surrounding the property bent and whispered to one another beneath the weight of the weather. On her first day at Belle Vue, Dr. Aisha Rahman had thought the place looked less like a hospital and more like a forgotten monastery.Five months later, she still wasn't entirely sure she had been wrong. The facility sat on nearly fifty acres of land several miles outside the nearest town, isolated enough that the world seemed to fade away once you passed through the front gates. Forests surrounded the property from every direction, stre

The Life Between The Pages

The rain lasted three days. Not the violent kind that arrived with thunder and lightning, but the slow, persistent sort that settled over the hills and refused to leave. Every morning Belle Vue Psychiatric Hospital emerged beneath the same blanket of gray clouds, and every evening darkness arrived early, swallowing the forests that surrounded the property until only silhouettes remained beyond the windows.By the fourth day, Aisha had begun noticing something peculiar.Every time it rained, Arman wrote more. The observation started innocently enough. She happened to pass through the eastern observation corridor several times during her shifts and found him exactly where he always seemed to be—sitting beside the large window overlooking the forest, a notebook balanced carefully on his lap while his pen moved steadily across the page.He never appeared rushed.Never seemed frustrated. The writing flowed naturally, almost peacefully, as though he were recording memories rather than creat

The Shape Of Loneliness

For the next several days, Aisha found herself moving through the hospital in a strange state of distraction, as though part of her mind remained trapped somewhere inside Arman's notebooks while the rest of her continued carrying out the responsibilities of her job. She attended meetings, reviewed patient evaluations, completed treatment plans, and conducted therapy sessions, yet beneath every conversation lingered the same unanswered questions.Who had Arman been before Belle Vue?What kind of loneliness could inspire a child to create an entire family? And perhaps most importantly, why had he continued holding onto that family for nearly sixty years? The journals had given her Meher and Zara, but they had revealed surprisingly little about Arman himself. Every page overflowed with details about his wife, his daughter, their home, their routines, their joys and sorrows, yet the man writing those words often seemed to fade quietly into the background, content to observe the people he
