Xavier’s PovThe journey back to Volkarion felt longer than the actual war itself. My horse moved steadily but my mind was somewhere else completely. I kept thinking about seeing Astrid again. Just the thought of her face made something warm spread through my chest. I remembered her soft eyes. I remembered her gentle voice. Most of all I remembered her beautiful hair. It looked like she used some kind of magic potion on it. The kind vampires take so they can walk in the sun without burning. Her hair was always so gorgeous. It shone even in the dark. I could not stop thinking about running my fingers through it.Talon and Caden were talking beside me. They discussed the short battle and how easy the victory was. I heard their voices but the words did not enter my head. I was too busy imagining Astrid smile. I wondered if she missed me even a little. I wondered if she still wore my coat again.Suddenly Talon raised his voice. “Xavier. Xavier.”I turned my head slowly. “Yes?”He studied

Astrid’s PovIf someone had told me that I would be getting married to the ugliest man in the world I would never have believed it. Not even for one second. I had always dreamed about my wedding day. I imagined wearing a beautiful white dress with flowers in my hair. I imagined smiling because I was happy. But here I was standing in front of a cracked mirror looking at myself in a dress that was not mine. I looked beautiful on the outside but inside I felt completely empty. Two ladies I did not even know were helping me get ready. One was kind and quiet. The other had a mean face and kept sighing like I was wasting her time. I turned to the kind one with tears in my eyes.“Please I cannot do this,” I whispered. She gave me a small sad smile. “My child you have to. We have no option. This is what we do to survive.”I tried again. “I cannot do this. I still have so much to live for. I cannot stay with this man please.”The mean one snapped at me. “Hey girl do not spoil the makeup we wor

Xavier’s POV Her eyes were still locked on mine, wide and unblinking, like a creature caught in the snare of its own making. My fingers remained under her chin, the pad of my thumb brushing the soft line of her jaw with just enough pressure to remind her who held the reins. Astrid. So fragile in appearance, yet there was steel beneath that porcelain skin—steel I had tested myself. She was beautiful in a way that clawed at the edges of my control, all delicate angles and quiet defiance. Her lips parted slightly, and I found myself tracing the faint flush creeping across her cheeks, the way her pulse fluttered visibly at the base of her throat. Mine to protect. Mine to command. The thought surged through me, dark and possessive, laced with something sharper I couldn’t name. No one had touched her while she was gone. If they had… the rage that flickered at the mere idea coiled low in my gut, hot and unfamiliar. Why did the thought of another’s hands on her ignite such fury? I owed her n

Astrid’s PovWe walked side by side toward the Alpha’s chambers. The halls felt quieter than usual. Talon’s presence beside me made my skin feel warm. I could feel his eyes on me, but I kept my gaze forward and tried to ignore it.“Why are you burning red?” Talon asked suddenly.I shook my head. “I am not burning red. Not at all.”He stopped for a second and looked at me with a small smile. “Later, Astrid.” Then he turned and walked away down another corridor. My heart did not settle right away. It kept beating faster than it should. I pressed a hand lightly against my chest and forced myself to keep moving. I had duties now. I could not let small things distract me.Two warriors stood outside the Alpha’s chambers. They did not speak. They simply opened the heavy doors for me as if they already knew I was expected. I stepped inside and closed the door quietly behind me.Alpha Xavier stood by the tall window. Afternoon light fell across his shoulders. He looked calm, almost still, but

Xavier’s POVI hated the interruption more than anything. If there was ever a moment I truly hated being Alpha, it was this one. Someone had decided to walk into my chambers while Astrid’s hands were still on my skin. While her cool cloths were easing the fire under my flesh. While I was finally starting to breathe again. Her touch had felt good. Too good. I had been enjoying every careful stroke across my chest and neck. Then the door opened and the moment shattered.Aliya’s voice came first.“Oh baby, I had to call the Moon Goddess. I had to. I had to call the healers. What’s wrong? Are you okay now?”She rushed forward and turned sharply on Astrid.“What are you doing to him? What are you keeping him like this for?”Astrid’s voice came out small. “I was trying to make his temperature go down.”I spoke before Aliya could say more. “Let Astrid be.”Aliya shook her head and wrapped her arms around me instead. “Are you fine? Are you better now? Oh, your body is still so hot.”The Moon
