What he refuses to become

Denise didn’t look away from him. Not this time. Liam’s last sentence lingered in the space between them like something unfinished—like a door that had been opened but not yet walked through. “I don’t trust myself around you,” he had said. Denise repeated it softly. “Around me?” Liam didn’t correct her. That was the answer. Below them, the forest was quiet again, but it wasn’t the same kind of quiet as before. This one felt like it had settled into patience instead of retreat. Denise exhaled slowly. “So you’re saying I’m dangerous to you.” Liam’s jaw tightened slightly. “No,” he said. A pause. Then quieter: “You’re… influential.” Denise gave him a flat look. “That’s just a nicer word.” “It’s more precise,” he replied. Denise shook her head. “No, it’s avoiding the point.” Liam didn’t deny it. That alone made her chest tighten slightly. She stepped closer to the balcony edge again, looking down into the courtyard. “So what happens next time they t

The answer they didn’t expect

The silence after Liam’s refusal didn’t feel empty. It felt listening. Denise stayed still beside him, her eyes fixed on the treeline. Whatever had spoken from the forest had not repeated itself, but its absence felt heavier than its voice. Liam didn’t relax. If anything, his stillness sharpened. Denise glanced at him. “You said no.” “Yes,” he replied. “That sounded final.” “It was.” Another pause. Then Denise asked quietly, “What happens when you say no to them?” Liam’s jaw tightened slightly. “Depends on how attached they are to the outcome.” Denise frowned. “And how attached are they?” Liam finally looked at her. “Enough to send a second wave,” he said. Denise exhaled slowly. “There’s always a second wave with you, isn’t there?” A faint, almost humorless flicker crossed his expression. “Yes.” Below, the courtyard lights flickered again—but this time, unevenly. Like something was testing whether the structure still obeyed its original rules.

The edge of choice

Denise’s breathing slowed without her permission. Not because she was calming down— but because something in the air was adjusting her state. Like the world itself was trying to make her more receptive. She noticed it and immediately felt a spike of fear. “I don’t like that,” she said under her breath. Liam’s voice came instantly, sharper now. “Don’t let it settle.” Denise turned slightly toward him. “It feels like it’s inside the room.” “It is,” he said. That answer hit harder than she expected. Her eyes flicked back to the figure in the forest. It stood perfectly still, hand still raised, like it wasn’t forcing anything anymore. Just holding an option open. Denise swallowed. “So what is this now? Another signal?” Liam didn’t take his eyes off the forest. “No,” he said quietly. “This is persuasion architecture.” Denise frowned. “That sounds made up.” “It isn’t,” he replied. A pause. Then he added: “It’s older than me.” That made her look

The count begins

The silence didn’t leave. It settled. Denise felt it like a weight that didn’t press down on her body, but on time itself. “You said a cycle,” she whispered. “What cycle?” Liam didn’t answer immediately. His attention stayed on the forest, where nothing was moving now—but everything felt prepared to. Then he said quietly, “Their alignment window.” Denise frowned. “You’ve said that before.” “Yes.” She swallowed. “How long is it?” A pause. Liam’s jaw tightened slightly. “Not long enough,” he said. Denise stared at him. “That’s not an answer.” “It is the only honest one.” That landed heavily. Below, the courtyard lights flickered again—soft, uneven pulses, like something distant was testing whether the mansion still belonged to its original reality. Denise hugged her arms closer. “So I just wait here while they decide what I am?” Liam turned slightly toward her. “You don’t wait,” he said. “You hold.” Denise frowned. “Hold what?” Liam looked at

When silence waits for you

Denise didn’t speak immediately. Not because she didn’t have words— but because every option she considered felt like it had already been evaluated by something else inside her. That scared her more than the forest. Liam stayed in front of her, unmoving. Not blocking her. Shielding her from something that wasn’t visible anymore, only felt. “You’re doing it again,” she said quietly. Liam’s voice was low. “Doing what?” “Making it sound like I’m already halfway gone.” A pause. Then Liam replied carefully: “You’re not gone.” Denise let out a short breath. “That’s not what it feels like.” Below, the forest boundary remained intact—no movement, no advance. But the stillness now felt like a held breath rather than withdrawal. Something was listening. Denise rubbed her arms slightly. “This pressure in my head… it’s worse when I think about you.” Liam’s expression tightened. “That’s expected,” he said. Denise frowned. “That’s not comforting either.” “I

When the forest rest back

The silence didn’t hold. It tightened. Denise felt it immediately—like the entire forest line had shifted its attention from her to Liam in a single, unified motion. She turned slightly. “What did I do?” Liam didn’t look away from the boundary. “You stabilized the interference pattern,” he said quietly. Denise frowned. “That doesn’t sound like something I understand.” “It isn’t,” he replied. A pause. Then softer: “But it’s something they understand very well.” Below, the forest line flickered again. Not a movement. A response. The voice returned—but not as clearly as before. It sounded… layered now. Strained. “External anchor influence confirmed,” it said. Denise’s chest tightened. “It sounds angry.” Liam’s jaw flexed slightly. “It’s recalculating,” he corrected. Denise looked at him. “Recalculating what?” Liam finally turned his head slightly toward her. “How to reach you without me,” he said. Silence. That landed heavier than everythin

When they decide the obstacle

The forest didn’t move. It paused like a thought refusing to become action. Denise felt that difference in her bones. Something had changed out there—not in strength, but in intent. She looked at Liam. “They’re focusing on you now.” Liam didn’t deny it. His eyes stayed locked on the segmented arcs in the forest. “Yes,” he said quietly. Denise frowned. “That’s bad, isn’t it?” A short pause. Then Liam answered: “It depends on what they decide I am to remove.” Denise swallowed. “That sounds like you’re speaking about yourself like you’re expendable.” Liam’s expression tightened slightly. “I’m not,” he said. But the way he said it didn’t sound like comfort. It sounded like calculation. Below, the constructed figure shifted again. It didn’t step forward this time. Instead, it dissolved slightly—breaking apart into smaller visual fragments, like it was becoming data instead of form. Denise felt a strange pressure in her head immediately. Not pulli

The one they Aim at

The moment the forest moved towards Liam, the air changed shape. Not pressure. Not sound. Intention. Denise felt it like a clean line being drawn through the world, everything else fading into background noise. Her body reacted before her mind caught up. “Liam—” she started. But he was already moving. Not away from her. Not toward the door. Forward. Down into the courtyard. Denise rushed to the balcony edge. “What are you doing?!” Liam didn’t look back. “I’m removing the variable they can’t control,” he said. Denise’s chest tightened. “That sounds like you’re walking into it.” “It is,” he replied. Below, the forest boundary opened. Not like a breach. Like permission being withdrawn from reality. And something stepped through. Not the earlier forms. Not fragments. This was structured. Fully assembled presence. Denise felt it immediately in her mind—the same analytical pressure from before—but now it wasn’t scanning her. It was ignor

The thing he refuses to become

The air snapped. And Liam finally lost control. Denise heard the crack before she understood what it was. Bone. Muscle. Something beneath skin forcing its way free. “Liam?” His back arched. A sound ripped from his throat. Not pain. Not quite. Something older. Something wild. The creature approaching from the forest stopped. Waiting. Watching. Like it had expected this. “Liam!” Denise rushed toward the stairs. Below, Liam dropped to one knee. His hands dug into the stone. Cracks spread beneath his fingers. His breathing became ragged. Uneven. Dangerous. Then he looked up. And Denise froze. His eyes were gold. Not glowing. Not supernatural-looking. Just unmistakably inhuman. Predator eyes. Focused entirely on her. For one terrifying second she thought he might not recognize her. Then he spoke. “Stay inside.” His voice sounded wrong. Deeper. Rougher. Like a growl hidden beneath every word. Denise ignored hi

The truth

The stranger’s words hung in the courtyard long after the silence should have ended. You’re choosing her over your pack? Yes. Denise couldn’t stop staring at Liam. The certainty in his voice unsettled her more than the gold eyes. More than the growl. More than the fact that apparently werewolves existed. Because Liam hadn’t hesitated. Not even for a second. The three men at the forest edge exchanged looks. The one in front shook his head. “You’ve lost perspective.” Liam’s expression remained cold. “No.” “Then you’re lying to yourself.” The stranger glanced toward Denise. “She doesn’t understand what this is.” “I don’t care what you think she understands.” The temperature in the courtyard seemed to drop. The stranger sighed. “That’s the problem.” Denise finally found her voice. “Could somebody explain why everyone keeps talking around me?” All four men looked at her. Including Liam. The attention made her want to throw something. “G
