The second article was worse than the first, not because it revealed anything new, but because of what it implied.**FROM NANNY TO NEW MRS. VALE? SOURCES CLAIM SERENA HART HAS "BIGGER PLANS" THAN CHILDCARE**Serena read it standing in the kitchen, coffee going cold in her hand, feeling something curdle in her stomach with every paragraph. The article was carefully constructed no direct quotes attributed to anyone willing to be named, just "sources close to the family" and "insiders familiar with the Vale household," all of them apparently very willing to suggest that Serena had angled her way into Kael's life with calculated precision, that her background of financial hardship made her motives suspect, that a woman in her position "landing" a man like Kael Vale was, at minimum, worth being skeptical about. It wasn't the ugliest thing that had been written about her since the gala. It was, in some ways, the most effective, because it didn't need to lie outright. It just needed to plant

It happened on an ordinary Sunday, which surprised Serena more than if it had come during some obviously significant moment. No anniversary. No crisis. Just an unremarkable afternoon, Lia off at a friend's birthday party, the house unusually quiet around them. She found Kael standing outside the door at the end of the upstairs hallway the one she'd learned, months ago, never to ask about, the one Mrs. Rowan dusted out of habit and no one else ever entered."Kael?"He didn't turn immediately, his hand resting flat against the wood the way she'd seen him do once before, months earlier, though she'd pretended not to notice at the time."This was Elena's study," he said, without preamble, like he'd been waiting for the right moment to say it out loud and had simply decided this was it. "I haven't been inside since she died."Serena stayed quiet, sensing this wasn't a moment that needed her to fill the silence."I keep telling myself I'll go through her things eventually. Sort out what to

Lia heard the car in the driveway before anyone else did, abandoning her coloring book mid-picture and sprinting for the front door with the kind of unrestrained joy only a six-year-old could summon on a Tuesday afternoon."Dad!"Kael barely had time to set down his suitcase before she collided with his legs, and he laughed a real laugh, unguarded, the exhaustion of three days of negotiations falling away almost instantly."Hey, trouble. Did you miss me?""So much. I drew you four more pictures. Serena says we ran out of wall space in your office but I think we should just build a bigger office.""A reasonable solution." He scooped her up, pressing a kiss to the top of her head, before his eyes found Serena standing in the doorway, watching the two of them with an expression that made something warm settle in his chest even through the travel fatigue."Welcome home," she said softly."It's good to be home."---Later that evening, once Lia had exhausted herself narrating three days' w

The note came home in Lia's backpack on a Monday, crumpled slightly from a day of enthusiastic handling: the annual first-grade spring performance, this year's theme apparently involving woodland creatures and a song about friendship that Lia had already memorized in its entirety and performed, unprompted, at least four times over dinner that week."You're coming, right?" Lia asked Serena, not for the first time, her small face serious with the particular anxiety of a child who needed to hear the answer confirmed repeatedly before she could fully trust it."Of course I'm coming, sweetheart. Wouldn't miss it.""And Dad?""Your dad already blocked off the whole afternoon. Nothing's getting in the way of this."Lia beamed, satisfied, and returned to rehearsing her one speaking line "The forest is home to many creatures, and every creature matters" with an intensity that suggested she considered it roughly equivalent to a Broadway monologue.---The auditorium was already crowded by the t
