~080~ HIS RESTING PLACE

NORA A long silence stretches between us. Then Mars lifts his gaze to mine, his gaze heavy."Otto was the perfect heir."I stare at him, frowning. "What does that mean?""It means while they taught me how to endure pain, they taught him how to cause it without getting blood on his hands."My stomach churns."He knows about the lessons?" I whisper.Mars gives me a slow nod. "He was there for some of them."The room falls deathly quiet.Fragments rush through my mind—Otto opening the door in silk and studying my wedding ring. The way he said, 'Everyone is always being tested, Mrs. Gregory.'I tighten the robe around myself, suddenly feeling cold."Why didn't you tell me this before I went?""Because I didn't remember his name until you said it." His voice is hollow. "And now... I remember enough."His gaze hardens. "Otto never does anything without an agenda."I glance towards the black folder resting on the armchair. My dream sits inside that folder. So does a trap.Mars watches

~081~ THE COMMAND

NORA Mars' hand slips slowly beneath the hem of my singlet. His palm moves over my stomach, before climbing higher."Mars."His hand closes gently around my breast and my breath catches. Lazily, he brushes his thumb over my nipple. I bite my lip before the sound building in my throat can escape."Let me guess," he mumbles. "You're still going."I try to glare at him, but his thumb circles again."I'm going to renegotiate,” I say.His eyebrow lifts."I'll decline the travel condition," I continue, struggling to keep my voice steady. "If he still insists I have to travel with him, the deal is off."Mars studies me, his thumb freezing."You mean that?""Yes."A long breath leaves him. "Fine. This is part of my punishment, isn't it?"He draws me closer until my tits are near his mouth.A question sparkles in his eyes. The fact that he asks without words softens me.I nod.Mars lifts the edge of my singlet slowly. His soft lips close around my nipple, and my breath shudders. He suck

~082~ THE COMMAND PT. II

NORA I don't like this at all. Hell, I don't like the way he's staring. However, my curiosity is still winning. I have to know what I'm dealing with. I won't be surprised if he's a vampire from the 1800s.Could explain why he thinks stalking and obsession is romantic. Or why he's nearly thirty and still looks twenty-three. And his ridiculous stamina—What the fuck, Nora? Get your shit together."You broke three men apart like they weren't human," I say, and his eyes slip closed in exasperation. He exhales slowly through his nose. It feels like he is counting himself down from something. When his eyes open again, they seem even darker. A shudder runs through me."Please," he says. The word should soften me. It doesn't. Especially not with his gaze tracking my hands, the distance between us, and the heavy ceramic soap dispenser beside my elbow. He is assessing the room. Assessing me. The realization makes me want to hightail it out of here."You're doing it now," I whisper. His ex

~083~ LONELY AT THE TOP

MARS The restaurant has seven exits. Two for guests. Three into the kitchens. One to the loading bay. The last sits behind a frosted-glass door marked STAFF ONLY. Fourteen cameras watch the dining floor. Three of which have blind spots.I hate it.Nora walks beside my wheelchair, her arms folded tight, refusing to look at me. Her heels click against the marble in angry taps. She hasn't spoken since we left the villa. Thirty-two minutes. The longest she's ever stayed quiet around me."Your friend is near the window," I say."I can see her.""I know.""Then why tell me?"Because I need to hear her voice. Because every time she drifts beyond the reach of my hand, monstrous thoughts cloud my mind.I keep those answers to myself.Valentina sits alone at a table overlooking the fountains, enormous sunglasses perched on her nose even indoors, sipping something sickeningly green. She spots us. Her mouth drops open. Then her gaze lands on the wheelchair."Oh, hell," she growls.Nora's a

~084~ HIS WOES

MARCELLUS Nora walks out of the restaurant without looking back. I follow. The wheelchair is too slow. Every push of the wheels feels like it's working against me. By the time I reach the entrance, she's already standing at the curb with her arms crossed, scanning the street like she's searching for an escape route."Nora."She doesn't turn."We're going back to the villa,” I say."No." Her voice is flat. "I'm not going back with you right now."I grip the armrests until the metal bites into my palms."I know you're pissed. But you're also not thinking straight right now."She finally looks at me. There's no heat in her eyes. Her gaze is so cold, so unlike her."Between the two of us, you're the one who hasn't been thinking."A taxi pulls up. She raises her hand, and the driver slows.I push forward. "Don't."She opens the door."Nora—""I need space, Mars." She pauses with one foot inside the car. "If you follow me, I will not forgive you."The door closes and the taxi pulls

~085~ TO LEAVE OR TO STAY

NORA The taxi stops outside the villa, but I don't get out. I sit there with my purse clutched against my stomach, staring through the window at the dark building.Valentina had reminded me that the villa has staff, nurses, doctors, security, and enough cameras to capture Mars breathing from twelve different angles. He does not need me. That was her point. And she is right. I'm only here to collect a few things. Then I'm returning to Val's suite.Simple.So why does my chest feel so tight?"Madam?" the driver asks."One minute."He nods and settles back. I look at the villa again. The last time Mars thought I was gone, he regressed so badly that he barely recognized the world around him. That wasn't my fault. His recovery cannot depend entirely on me being within touching distance. That isn't healthy for either of us. Still, I remember how terrified he looked when my taxi pulled away.I close my eyes and groan. "God, I hate that man."The driver wisely says nothing.I push th

~086~ THE PRISON OF HIS MIND

NORA My husband's face goes blank. I don't know why Mr. Hartmann is calling. Either way, we still haven’t negotiated. I can't do that over the phone. However, I can't ignore him. So I answer the call and bring the phone to my ear."I trust that I have given you enough time to think," he tells me, and I nearly roll my eyes."I'll see you tomorrow," I say, and he hums."Will you now? Well, I'll be expecting you. Same time. Same place.” He hangs up before I can argue.Arrogant jerk. When I lower the phone, Mars is still staring. He shifts, trying to push himself higher against the pillows. Pain tightens his face immediately."Don't." I press one hand against his shoulder. "You've already done enough damage for one day."His gaze dips to my hand, then it lifts to my face."You're leaving."My half-packed suitcase still sits open beside the wardrobe. Apparently, near-death exhaustion does nothing to dull his abandonment radar."I came to collect my things."His fingers close around

~087~ RESTRAINT OR NAH?

NORA Mars' fingers tighten around my wrist. The softness in his face disappears, replaced by something colder."An organization," he says. "Or that's what they called themselves."The monitor beside him continues its steady beeping. I wait, but he looks towards the window instead of me."What kind of organization?"His jaw clenches. "One that trafficked children."For a second, I'm certain I misheard him."They moved children through orphanages, charities, and private schools," Mars continues. His voice has gone flat. "Some were sold. Some were kept and trained. Others were handed over to wealthy people who paid to hurt them."My stomach churns terribly. "Hurt them how?"He doesn't answer. He doesn't need to. I pull my hand from his and cover my mouth, suddenly nauseous."Oh my God. And you were—"I stop. His gaze meets mine. He doesn't confirm it. He doesn't have to do that either. My heart is breaking apart in real time."Mars...""Rachel was a part of them," he says. "She

~088~ ME, MY HUSBAND AND THE BED

NORA Mars glances down at the pillow, worrying his lower lip between his teeth. "I... I couldn't sleep. The nurse was snoring. She was in the sitting room. But the noise—"I groan. "Are you kidding me right now?"His eyes dart away, and I fold my arms.He looks drained and embarrassed. Ridiculously handsome despite resembling a fugitive who escaped a medical ward with one decorative pillow."You promised," I remind him."I promised not to break the door.""You promised not to come into my room," I hiss at him, and he frowns."I'm not in your room."I stare at him. He is standing with the front half of his body leaning through the doorway. Mars slowly leans backwards."Technically." His mouth tightens. "I wasn't going to come in.""Then why do you have a pillow?"He looks down at it again as though he has only just noticed it."I thought I might sleep outside."My anger falters. "Outside the room?"He nods once. What the fuck, Mars? Why do you keep making my heart race like this?

~089~ SICKENING TURBULENCE

NORA For several seconds, all I hear is static and my brother’s breathing. "Nora, don't go online."I sit up straighter. Mars is already on the phone with Jensen."What happened?" I ask.Jordan swears under his breath. "Someone uploaded a video."My stomach plummets."What kind of video?"Across the bed, Mars freezes. My husband's eyes pin mine.Jordan's voice lowers as he responds. "Someone was being interrogated at gunpoint. The man confessed to abusing your husband."My head spins, blood draining from my face. "W-What?""He named several others."My fingers go numb around the phone. Mars ends his call without saying goodbye."What exactly did he say?" I ask."Nora, you shouldn't watch it.""Send it to me now.""I said no." His breath catches. "I wish I hadn't seen it. Dad's people are already trying to get every copy removed, but it's everywhere. Every platform. News pages. Gossip accounts. People are recording their screens and uploading it again.""Don't make me ask again,"
