“Give it back,” Mac read. “Or she’ll make sure you never see your son unsupervised again.”He was on his feet before she finished reading it to him. She heard his chair push back through the phone, heard the shift in his breathing, the specific quality of a man who had just crossed from controlled to something harder and colder underneath.“Where are you right now,” he said.“Halfway to your building. I’m on the street.” She kept walking. Her pace had not changed since the text came through. She had learned a long time ago that panic was just energy pointed in the wrong direction. “Mac. I need you to listen to me before you do anything.”“I’m listening.”“This text is Sandra. It has to be. Peter said she would know by tomorrow that it was him but she already knows. She saw me leave the coffee shop with the folder.” Cloe gripped the folder tighter under her arm. “She is scared. Scared people make mistakes. This text is a mistake.”“It’s a threat against your custody of Dave.”“It’s a b

“That photograph was taken today,” Cloe said. “Someone was watching the coffee shop.”Mac was already on the phone. She heard him give two instructions, sharp and clipped, before he ended the call and looked at her with an expression she had not seen on him before. Not anger. Something more focused than anger. The look of a man who had just understood the full shape of what he was dealing with and had stopped being surprised by any of it.“Sandra had someone outside,” he said. “She knew about Peter. She knew I had the folder. She was already moving.”“The article.” Cloe picked up his phone and read it properly. Forty words. No quotes. No named sources. Just enough to plant the idea, to put his name next to the word investigation in a sentence that a casual reader would remember even after the retraction. “This isn’t journalism. It’s a notification. She’s telling us she still has moves.”“She has one move,” Mac said. “Noise. She doesn’t have substance anymore. We have the emails. We ha

“Two o’clock,” Ruth said. “That’s three hours from now. Can you be ready?”“I’m already ready.” Cloe was standing at her desk, jacket on, the folder under her arm. Mac was in his office doorway watching her face. “What does it mean that he called us in today? Before the five o’clock deadline?”“It means the judge reviewed the filings independently and decided he didn’t want to wait.” Ruth’s voice was tight but focused. “It could mean he’s going to dismiss the whole thing from the bench. It could mean he has questions. Either way we go in with everything and we let the documentation speak.” A pause. “I’ll meet you outside the courthouse at one-thirty. Don’t be late.”She ended the call.Mac crossed the room. He stopped in front of her and looked at her face the way he did when he was checking something he could not ask out loud. She met his eyes and let him check.“I’m okay,” she said.“I know.” He reached out and straightened her jacket collar. One small, deliberate motion. His finger

“Why are you telling me this,” Cloe typed back. “You just lost a custody case you built to destroy me. Why would you warn me about Sandra now.”She stared at the screen while the three dots appeared and disappeared twice before his response came through.Because she’s going too far. Whatever I did to you, I never wanted this. She’s not stopping and I can’t make her stop and you need to know that.Cloe read it once. Then again. She did not trust Marshall. She had not trusted Marshall since a pavement three weeks ago and she was not about to start now because he had sent her a text that sounded like conscience. Marshall did not operate from conscience. He operated from calculation. Which meant this text was a calculation too and the question was what he was calculating for.She called Mac.He answered before the second ring. “I was about to call you. Ruth just—”“Marshall texted me,” she said. “Read it.”She forwarded the message. She heard him open it.Silence for four seconds.“He’s s

“She said not to open it with Mac present,” Daniel said. “Those were her exact words.”Cloe looked at the envelope on the table between them. White. Sealed. Her name written on the front in handwriting she did not recognise. Not Sandra’s. Someone else had addressed it.“Did she say why,” Cloe said.“No.” Daniel’s voice was careful. “She just said it was something you deserved to know. Her words. Deserved.” He paused. “I don’t know what’s in it. She didn’t show me. She handed it to me this morning outside this building and told me to give it to you today.”Cloe looked at the envelope.Sandra had sat in Mac’s office this morning and listened to everything he had to say and then walked out and called a journalist and sent him an envelope addressed to Cloe with instructions not to open it in front of Mac.Sandra did not do anything without a reason. The question was what the reason was.Cloe picked it up. It was thin. One page, maybe two. She turned it over. Sealed properly, the flap pres
