Chapter 131

AURORA I walked out of the courthouse and squinted as the sun hit me like a slap, too bright and too warm after the cold of the courtroom, and I stood there for a second, reeling from the verdict before getting into my car. I won. I actually won. I should probably add this to my portfolio.I started the engine and drove off. “Hey, Bixby, call Lidyaaa." “Calling, Lydiaaa." It rang for a couple seconds before it went straight to voicemail, I tried again, my excitement dying down and it's still the same thing. What is she doing now?I continued to call her but it wouldn't go through. I began to try Aurora's nanny, and didn't notice the traffic slowing ahead until it was too late. I slammed on my brakes and stopped just in time but the car behind me didn't.Before I could blink, they slammed into me from behind, the violent jolt threw me forward and then back, my head snapping against steering and then the headrest, pain exploding through my neck and shoulders. There was another slam

Chapter 132

AURORAI woke up the next morning with my body aching all over, my neck was stiff from the position I slept in because of my head and my head was pounding. I lay there for a long moment staring at the ceiling of Lydia's guest room, the white paint cracked in places. I don't even remember falling asleep, or anything at all after Damien left and Lydia wanted to chew his head off. I heard just the sound of the door closing.I heard Arya's voice somewhere in the house, laughing at something, that bright gurgling sound that made everything else fade away. I closed my eyes and wondered how she got here. Was it when I was asleep or this morning?I got up slowly, wincing at every movement, my muscles screaming in protest, my neck so stiff I could barely turn my head. I made my way to the bathroom and caught my reflection in the mirror and I stopped. The bruising darkened overnight. Purple and ugly, spreading across my neck and down my shoulders like someone painted me some hard to wash off co

Chapter 133

THIRD PERSON POV Damian walked into his house and closed the door behind him, the silence only made him uncomfortable. He glanced around as he loosened his tie and dropped his keys on the table by the door. "Damien?" A voice came from upstairs, sharp and thin. "Is that you?"He looked up and Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs, her hair a mess, her face tight and irritated, still wearing the same clothes she had on this morning."Where have you been?""Out."She came down the stairs, her voice rising with each step. "Out where? With her?""Vanessa, don't—""Don't what? Don't ask?" She reached the bottom of the stairs and stood in front of him, her arms crossed, her jaw tight. "I know you went to see her. I know you've been going to see her every chance you get. You think I don't know that my fiance is planning to cheat on me?"Damian found it hard to respond. What would he say? Sorry? Or that whether she liked it or not he was going to get Aurora's forgiveness? He meant it. He

Chapter 134

THIRD PERSON POVShe stared at him, her eyes red and wild, her breath coming out in sharp gasps."I can't do this without you," she whispered. "I can't. You have to promise me we'll get married. Promise me. Set a date, we'll hold the most beautiful wedding. Promise me!"No. No. No..“Promise me Damian!" "Fine! Yes!” He straightened up. “We'll get married next month." He took another step forward. "Don't lie to me. If I find out you're lying I'll set this house on fire.""I'm not lying. I promise we'll get married next month. You can start preparation."She searched his face, her hand shaking. "So please," he said. "Please, Vanessa. Just put it down."She let it go and the knife clattered to the floor. She then fell into his arms.He caught her and held her as she sobbed against his chest, her body shaking so hard he had to tighten his grip to keep her steady. She was crying so hard she couldn't breathe."I'm sorry," she said over and over, her voice muffled by his shirt. "I'm sorry

Chapter 135

THIRD PERSON POV Vanessa sat in the living room with her friends, a glass of wine in her hand, her nails freshly done, her hair perfectly curled. She called them over the second Damian left for work, telling them it was urgent, that something big was happening. "So what's the emergency?" Claire asked, dropping onto the couch and grabbing a wine glass for herself. "You made it sound like someone died." "Worse," Michelle said with a laugh, already pouring herself some of the expensive red Vanessa had opened for them. "She found a grey hair. Or a wrinkle. Or she finally realized she's been engaged for four years with no wedding date." The girls laughed and Vanessa forced a smile, her grip tightening around her own glass. She watched them settle into her couch, making themselves comfortable like they owned the place, and weren't here to judge

Chapter 136

THIRD PERSON POV Vanessa woke up at six the next morning and she hadn't slept, not really, not more than an hour. Her body was aching and her head was pounding but she didn't care. She had too much to do.The house was chaos. Boxes everywhere. Flowers that weren't the right color. A cake that was too small. A delivery guy who couldn't find the right entrance. She was already running behind and she needed to get ahead, needed to make sure everything was perfect."What do you mean the champagne isn't here yet?" She screamed into her phone. "I ordered it last night! I paid extra for express delivery!"The delivery guy was stammering, trying to explain, and she cut him off."Just get it here. I don't care how. Get it here."She hung up and turned to the florist who was trying to arrange roses on the dining table. "No, no, no. Those are in the wrong place. Move them. Put them by the entrance."The florist opened her mouth to argue, and Vanessa snapped."Just do what I say! I'm paying you

Chapter 137

THIRD PERSON Damian pulled up to his house and killed the engine. He had to cancel his flight out because of a storm in some city. A dent on his plan to finish up his work but another day to pitbuo with Vanessa's shit anyway. But when he slight, ridiculously bright light was the first thing he noticed, and then the cars. Dozens of them, to many to be just her friends, all lined up along the driveway, parked on the street and spilling out onto the lawn like a car dealer. He stared at them for a moment, his hands still gripping the phone in his hands. His mind struggling to make sense of what he was seeing. It better not be what he's thinking.Loud and upbeat music drifted out from the house. A very known genre you'd play in a club. Shadows dancing across the curtains by the windows, silhouettes of people he didn't recognize and some he probably should. Laughter, glasses clinking, someone shouting over the noise. His jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. Damian walked toward the fron

Chapter 138

Damian woke up on the couch in his office, his neck stiff, his back aching, his clothes still rumpled from the night before. He hadn't even bothered to take off his shoes. He sat up slowly, rubbing his face, blinking at the morning light filtering through the blinds. He didn't sleep. Not really. He spent the night staring at the ceiling, replaying everything, every mistake, every wrong choice, every moment he'd let slip through his fingers. He was tired of fighting. Tired of pretending. Literally tired of everything.Truthfully, a few months after Aurora left, he knew he'd made the wrong choice. But going to look for her would only be selfish. She deserved better. Someone who didn't break her. Someone who didn't make her feel like she was nothing. So he let her go. He stayed away and stupidly he convinced himself it was the right thing to do.Instead, he threw himself into work, Vanessa and ridiculously pretending that everything was fine. He told himself he was happy and he would co

Chapter 139

THIRD PERSONDamian sat in his car across from Lydia's house, his hands still gripping the steering wheel, his eyes still fixed on the spot where the car had disappeared. He hadn't moved. He couldn't move. His mind was racing, spinning, trying to make sense of what he'd just seen.A child.A little girl with his eyes. His hair. His face.He replayed the moment over and over in his head, the way she ran out of the house, the way she called out "Mummy, wait for me!" the way Aurora scooped her up and laughed. The way the girl's head fell back and he saw her face clearly for the first time. His face.He did the math again. Four years since the divorce. The girl looked four. Maybe five. The timing lined up. It lined up perfectly. His hands started shaking again. He didn't know how long he sat there. Minutes. Hours. It felt like forever. But eventually, a car pulled into the driveway and he snapped back to the present.Aurora's car.She parked and killed the engine. She got out, walked arou

Chapter 140

AURORA'S POVFor three days I avoided him, dodged his calls and ignored his texts, told myself I didn't owe him anything. I didn't owe him my time, my attention, my forgiveness. He didn't deserve any of it. He made his choice four years ago when he let Vanessa push me out of his life. He made his choice when he didn't bother to check on me, didn't bother to wonder where I'd gone, didn't bother to fight for me.But somehow, he'd been hellbent on getting my forgiveness. Showing up at Lydia's house unannounced. Leaving flowers on the porch. Sending messages I refused to read. He was persistent, I'd give him that. But persistence didn't erase the years of silence. It didn't erase the loneliness, the fear, the nights I spent wondering if I'd survive until morning. And then I found out the truth. Vanessa was the one who lied. She told me he wanted nothing to do with me. She blocked every attempt I made to reach him. She made sure I believed I was alone, that he didn't care, that I meant not
