I was unpacking boxes in the living room the next morning when Lydia came down the stairs with her purse slung over her shoulder, her phone in her hand.  What now? She was supposed to help me unpack, literally why she came. "Hey, can I borrow your car? Mine's been acting up all week and I need to pick up some stuff from my mom's place." I looked up from the box I was cutting open. "Now? First of all you're supposed to help me." "I'm done with the kitchen so, yeah. And my mom's got some things she wants me to grab before tonight and I just realized it's already–" She glanced at her phone and groaned. "I didn't even notice the time. I'll be back before you need to leave, I promise." I glanced around the living room, at the half-unpacked boxes, the suitcases still piled in the hallway. I was supposed to be arranging things today,

ELENAI woke up on the couch again the next morning, my neck stiff and my head pounding. I didn't remember falling asleep there but I think I was too tired or lost deeply in thought. I didn't know when I dozed off. I sat up and my eyes landed on his purchase across the room, the ugly pink flip-flops, where I kicked them off last night. I stared at them for a long moment, and the image of him crouching in front of me, his hands on my ankle, sent me a shiver down my spine.I stood up and walked across the room. I picked them up. Not being petty, but they were light, cheap, something you'd buy in a convenience store at midnight because you have no other choice. And I don't wear purchases like that, unfortunately. I held them in my hands for a second, and then I walked to the trash can and dropped them in.I went to the bathroom afterwards and turned on the shower. I stood under the hot water for a long time, letting it run over my face, trying to wash away the exhaustion. I barely slept

AURORA I didn't even know when I let out a horrified scream. The cockroaches were everywhere, crawling over my hands and the desk and the floor and the walls. I couldn't breathe or think, I just kept screaming and swatting and they kept coming, more and more of them pouring out of that box like there was a black hole in there and it was never going to end. Nolan was shouting something but I couldn't hear him over my own voice, he grabbed my arm and pulled me back from the desk, his hand firm on my elbow, and I stumbled away from the chaos.People began running toward my office, Maya appeared in the doorway first, her eyes wide. "What the hell—""Don't come in!" I shouted. "There's—there's—"Cockroaches everywhere, crawling over my papers and my chair and the phone I was just holding, I wanted to throw up and cry and if possible burn the whole office down and never come back but I'll have to pay for that.Derek appeared behind Maya with a can of something in his hand, he pushed past

AURORA I come into work the next morning still running on empty, my head pounding from another sleepless night, my eyes burning from staring at the ceiling for hours. I didn't and still don't want to think about Gregory or the package or any of it at all. I just want to focus on the Sinclair case and get through the day without falling apart, or going crazy. My office was cleaned and arranged by the time I got there. There was not a speck of dust in sight. Flowers were there, and even a shelf I previously didn't have. It's been turned into an actual office overnight, compared to the floppy cleanup I did yesterday.I sat ln my desk and open the case file. I've been delaying the little left for a while now and any moment from now the court would set and this was kind of my first official case with the firm, I wouldn't want anything, anything at all to ruin it, whether Damian himself or Caleb.I shouldn't have trusted either anyway. The words blur in front of me and I blink, trying to f

AURORA I spent the morning before the hearing in my office, going over my notes and reading through the case file one more time, trying to calm my nerves, the words blurring in front of me because I still can't stop thinking about walking into that courtroom and seeing him. I've been preparing for days since the last time we saw each other and now it was here, and all I could think about was how I was going to sit across from him and pretend like he was just another client, like the last few months didn’t happen. The coffee on my desk went cold after hours of ignoring it. I just kept flipping through the file, reading the same paragraphs over and over, trying to make sure I didn't miss anything. This was a big case. My notes were thorough, everything was in order, but I still can't shake the feeling that something was going to go wrong. It could be the big case jitters. I hope that's just it.I checked my watch and sighed when I saw that it was time. The courthouse was busy when I go
