Chapter 40

Reyna's POVI walked into the room, the doors clicking in place behind me, my doll shoes barely making any noise. My insides were quivering under the king's intense gaze, while my mind was replaying my dream. The way he had pulled me in his arm, pressed my back on his front and—"Were you enjoying yourself?" he suddenly asked, pulling me out of my fantasy that had stirred something inside."M-y k-ing?" The words tumbled over my tongue. He didn't answer immediately; no, he walked towards me, just like he had in the dream, keeping his eyes on me, except now I was not naked."At the banquet," he clarified.I nodded. "Yes, my king.""With Lucas." He stated as a matter of fact, but I caught a low growl after."What?" I blinked, my eyebrows rising naturally. He scoffed. "You were laughing loudly, smiling at him." The alpha king took another step, his words leaving me genuinely wondering what he was going on about."I don't understand," I admitted, lowering my eyes to the ground. "What exact

Chapter 41

King Zion's POVThe heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind me, isolating the hallway in a dead, suffocating quiet. I stood perfectly still, closing my eyes as my chest rose and fell unevenly, while the scent of wild lilies and lilac clung stubbornly to my skin."Don't go," I heard Reyna say inside my room, her voice shaking barely audible. I squeezed my eyes further, the sudden pull proving strong to resist."Go back." My wolf pushed to the surface, knocking on my control. With one final look at the door, I pocketed my hands and walked away. If I went back into that room, I knew what would happen; I wasn't sure I'd be able to stop myself this time round. I didn't return to the banquet; I took the lift straight down to the underground garage, climbed into the white SUV, and tore through the palace gates, the tires screeching against the tarmac.I drove for hours, following the mountain roads that twisted endlessly. Raindrops battered the windshield, and even though the smell of the so

Chapter 42

Reyna's POVAmelia and I exited the palace, just as the morning breeze swept over the vast compound. Clark was already waiting before a slick white SUV, one shoulder resting against the passenger door, while he scrolled lazily through his phone. At the sound of our footsteps, he slipped the device into his pocket and looked up."There you are," he announced. "I was beginning to think you intended to keep me waiting all day.""We didn't even take long," I protested. I had begged Amelia to tell me where we were going, all in vain.Clark's eyes lingered on my face for a second longer than necessary. "You look...""What?" At that point I felt like everyone could read what had happened inside the king's chambers."You look well satisfied," he finished. I missed my next step, catching myself against the vehicle before I walked straight into it."Clark," Amelia shot him a warning look. The two seemed like they knew each other before, aside from Amelia being assigned to me."What?" he asked i

Chapter 43

King Zion's POVI had barely eaten half of my lunch by the time a servant announced visitors. "Lord Lockwood and Lord Beckett request an audience, Your Majesty." I didn't bother looking up from the documents spread across the dining table, beside my half-touched food. "Let them in."The royal dining room was flooded with the midday sun, filtering through the towering arched windows, painting long golden patterns across the polished marble floors. It was situated such that it directly overlooked the side palace grounds, a view that I used, to monitor the guards while I ate."My king," both men greeted me when they walked in. I acknowledged them with a brief nod and gestured toward the seats across from me, already having a precise idea of exactly why they had come. Madam Agnes served them, and I didn't miss the way her eyes kept on drifting to Lockwood, even though the man pretended he wasn't aware. "Your Majesty?" Lord Lockwood's voice reached me for what was probably the third time.

Chapter 44

Reyna's POV Lady Thelma's perfume lingered behind, even after she had brushed past me. She didn't acknowledge me; her eyes had simply swept over the shopping bags before her mouth curved downwards. One of the two men practically glared at me, the hostility in his eyes making my fingers tighten. I found myself lowering my gaze, a cold weight settling in my chest. When I looked up, the Alpha King still stood at the top of the grand palace steps. Again, for the briefest moment, his green eyes met mine, and my heartbeat stumbled. That was my chance: I had rehearsed two simple words the entire drive back to thank him. "My ki—" Before I could finish, he turned sharply on his heel and disappeared through the towering palace doors. The unfinished words faded in the afternoon breeze as the doors closed behind him. "Ki...ng," I whispered the last part, my throat suddenly going dry. For several seconds, I simply stared at the entrance, my chest tightening with an unexpected sting. Had he ge

Chapter 45

King Zion's POV The office door had been closed for several minutes, yet my eyes remained fixed on it. The map spread across my desk stopped making sense the moment Reyna left. Every section I looked at blurred before I studied it. "For a few hours... I stopped feeling like I was only a slave." Her voice echoed through my head again. I exhaled sharply, pushed the map aside and opened the files containing Eric's body and head photos, plus official reports from the royal examiners. I reread them line by line, but nothing was going into my mind. What I needed was a distraction, and the reports provided just that. "Damn it," I swore. I couldn't count the number of times my concentration was affected by thoughts about Reyna. It was probably the fourth time I couldn't get something done since she was brought by Clark as my slave. The double doors swinging open interrupted my growing irritation, and Clark stepped inside, closing them behind him. "Took you a minute in the capital," I st

Chapter 46

Reyna's POVThe sun had already begun setting by the time I admitted I was getting heart palpitations that I couldn't control. Outside my bedroom window, the palace remained unusually restless. Ever since breakfast, servants had hurried through the corridors speaking in hushed voices. Clark, who normally found a sarcastic remark whenever our paths crossed, had barely acknowledged me. Every time I asked what was happening, the answer remained frustratingly vague. "It's nothing to worry about." Even Amelia had grown quieter as the day wore on. She remained close, yet I noticed her drifting away whenever I questioned her. She was currently pacing inside my room, looking at her phone's screen and towards the window every five minutes. "Can't you at least give me a hint of whatever is going on?" I lamented, sitting up from the couch at the sitting area. "Reyna, I—" Three deliberate knocks cut her off, echoing through the room. "Finally," she muttered, and headed quickly to the door. Sh

Chapter 47

Reyna's POV I had barely closed my eyes when the beast slammed into me. Breath burst out of my lungs as my back slammed into the damp grass, but the pain I was expecting never came. My eyes flew open, as Amelia screams filled the air, but somehow despite its impossible size, the beast landed with care, his forelegs on either side of my body, boxing me in. I was trapped, and all I could feel was its warm breath washing over my face in heavy bursts. I lifted my eyes, coming into contact with his blazing red eyes, staring straight into mine. "Goddess..." I whispered, my heart hammering in my ribs as he lowered his massive head until his cold nose brushed my cheek. I blinked rapidly, shaking beneath him as he sniffed, dragging his muzzle slowly down my neck. A deep rumble vibrated inside his chest, and then, the world became silent for one impossible moment. Then, the beast froze, and his ears snapped upright. Every muscle beneath the thick midnight fur tightened, and the gentle rumble

Chapter 48

King Zion's POV Something warm rested against my chest, soft, and every second, I felt warm breath blowing on my chest. Every muscle in my body burning, like I had been torn apart and stitched back together. The last thing I remembered was driving into the woods, and walking deep before the sun even set. I didn't want to maim or kill anyone, so I chose to lose myself in the beast far away from settlements and the palace. Slowly, I opened my eyes, to a slightly dark sky, though the moon had already sunk beyond the horizon, and the sun was on its way to rising. My gaze lowered to loose strands of red hair spread across my chest and a slender hand resting across my upper abdomen. "Reyna?" I mumbled to myself, watching her curled against my side, one cheek pressed on my chest. Her left leg crossed over my waist, beneath the blanket that somehow ended up covering me too. She looked comfortable, as if sleeping beside him was the most natural thing in the world. "What the hell?" She did

Chapter 49

Reyna's POVThe journey back to the palace began in complete silence, with Clark behind the wheel. After Martha's question, the alpha king had ordered us all in the car and completely ignored the healer. I hadn't expected the king to travel with us, let alone sit at the back with me, while Amelia sat in front, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. He sat stiffly at a distance, one hand rested on his knee, fingers curled into a tight fist, the other firmly against his temple."Can you drive any faster?" His low voice filled the space. Clark didn't respond; he just briefly looked at him and then focused on the road. Every few moments, his breathing grew heavier before he forced it back under control. Ever since waking up, I hadn't been able to ignore the obvious bulge beneath his sweatpants. Even now, I couldn't stop my eyes from wandering and the subsequent throb his outline stirred between my legs.Another bend in the road made the vehicle sway gently, drawing a quiet groan from him.
