Chapter 30

Reyna's POVEver since I moved into the new room, and after the healer left, Clark woke me up every morning, escorted me to breakfast, then took me to the library, before returning me back to my room. Today, however, he didn't show up. I lay there, staring at the chandelier, the memories of the previous evening rushing back in a dizzying wave. My body on fire, Zion nearly going down on me, then just leaving me burning up. What was wrong with him? Then, my stomach let out a loud, hollow growl, reminding me that I hadn't eaten lunch or dinner the previous day. I groaned dramatically into the darkness of the room, throwing the heavy silk duvet aside. "King Zion leaves me burning, and just like that I forget I haven't eaten," I muttered under my breath as my bare feet hit the fluffy mat. My head was pounding mildly, no doubt from the whiskey, but it was nothing I couldn't handle with coffee. Acter scrubbing quick and wearing on the usual slave dresses, I stepped out. Outside my door, a t

Chapter 31

King Zion's POVThe cracked screen of the recovered mobile phone sat on my mahogany desk. Beside it lay the silver earring we had recovered from the swimming pool. Two pieces of evidence that didn't lead us to the main culprit, despite the fact that we had them."It has been one hell of a night and morning, but finally we have a name," Clark breathed out, plopping on the couch in my office. We barely caught any sleep, carrying out a lockdown and one-by-one investigations with the guards and every single staff member in the palace. We were currently in my office, convening to discuss what each of us uncovered so far."Yeah," I agreed, slumping back on my swivel office chair after hours of standing. "Put me up to speed," I said, a yawn following after."I ran the rollcalls, followed up with every guard outside the palace on their off days, and..." he spoke, tapping his fingers on his thigh. "I was able to identify the headless body. His name is Eric; he didn't report for his morning pos

Chapter 32

Reyna's POVI stood with my back facing the full-length mirror, twisting my face over my shoulder, trying to study my birthmark. A part of me wanted to find a difference, a discrepancy that stopped it from being identical to Lucas's, because it did not make any sense to me. The problem was there was none, no matter how many times I looked and compared the marks in my mind. I wanted so much to tell Lucas, but I kept my mouth shut until I could get some answers from Martha. I still remembered her reaction and words the day she dressed my whipped back wounds, the way she had traced her fingers over the mark.Determined to get to her, I hurried out of the royal wing to find Clark. He was the only one who could drive me to her cabin. I finally saw him in the lower courtyard, next to a heavy SUV, opening the driver-side door."Clark!" I called out, quickening my pace across the gravel, my white doll shoes barely making any sound. He paused, his brows knitting together as he looked over his

Chapter 33

King Zion's POVThe next day, Martha's report and the doctor's analysis arrived in my office at almost the same time, mid-morning. Both confirmed that indeed it was poison, although none could pinpoint exactly what poison it was. Martha swore something about it wasn't normal, especially since she confirmed it had no scent and therefore was hard to notice when put in food or drinks. The doctor had gone further and reviewed the reports of the dead slaves and confirmed that all deaths were similar."So we can agree now," Clark said quietly, lowering the report onto the desk. "Someone has been murdering your slaves for years, right under our noses.""But the death reports also show that they had severe internal vaginal tearing and bruised cervix," I pointed out, pinching my fingers over my eyelids. "How do you explain that?""Obviously the killer knew how to make it believable. Remember none of these girls died in your presence; hell, they even had foams on their mouths," Clark argued. "I

Chapter 34

Reyna's POVAfter breakfast, I insisted on coming to the library, despite Clark arguing that he needed to report to Zion. I wandered in the library, not looking for any book in particular. King Zion was still in the possession of that novel, so I needed something to help pass time before I drowned in the thoughts about my mark. I came across the history section; perhaps the kingdom's history would be a good addition to my knowledge. Clark waited patiently by the entrance, scrolling through his phone. I missed the privilege of having a phone, but the last time I held one was the night Randolf sent me that message, the night of our mating ceremony.I picked a thick book with the map of the kingdom on the cover, and we left. The corridors felt unusually empty as we walked back to the royal wing. "What was inside that pouch?" I suddenly asked Clark, trying to keep my voice casual. He turned to look at me briefly before staring ahead. "Palace business, Reyna.""You and Martha were mind-lin

Chapter 35

King ZionThe forest had fallen eerily silent by the time by best trackers arrived, alongside the royal examiners whose duty was to document the scene, examine the remains and transport them. There was not even a single sound, not even a single bird sang, even the larger beasts that roamed these woods had vanished. Even the wind was still and the temperature seemed to have dropped without warning. My wolf prowled restlessly beneath my skin, scratching against the edges of my my mind, wanting out. The patrol soldiers had resumed their duty, while Clark and I remained behind.Something about this scene refused to settle in my mind. Not Eric's head or the symbol carved into his forehead, just the entire arrangement. I walked another slow circle around the ring made of stones, and stopped beside the stake that held the head upright. The examiners were getting ready to pack things up, but I needed to check again. I couldn't understand how the stake itself had not burned to ashes."You have

Chapter 36

Reyna's POVI rubbed my burning eyes for what felt like the hundredth time. Every book I had borrowed from the library lay scattered across the rug, the small table having long run out of space. My curiosity about the strange witch's symbol had driven me to search through every book on the kingdom's history that I could find. The more I read, the stranger everything became, yet I struggled to make a connection.A knock sounded, just as a yawn slipped past my lips, leaving my eyes watery. "Come in," I called, my eyes still on the books with the yellow pages. Amelia stepped inside, barely past the doorway."You haven't left your room since morning," she pointed out, her eyes roaming over the mess in front of me, then finally falling on my face. "Did you even sleep at all?"I laughed lightly. "I wasn't sleepy at all. I mean, I barely realised as the sun rose."She raised an eyebrow. "And here I was thinking you didn't come out for breakfast because you were still sleeping."My stomach ch

Chapter 37

King Zion POV The conference room inside the royal headquarters in the main kingdom's town was unusually quiet. A large map of the kingdom occupied the center of the oak table, with two marks of where we discovered Eric's body and head marked by x. Surrounding it were photographs of the crime scenes, autopsy reports, and handwritten statements and information collected since Eric's murder. Around the table stood my best trackers, the royal examiners, and Clark. Every eye was fixed on the items on the table. "Report," I said to the lead tracker, resting my palms on the table. The dark surface of the wood felt cold against my skin, a stark contrast to the boiling restlessness beneath my flesh. He stepped forward. "Your Majesty, we have extended our search five miles in every direction from where the body and the head were found," he explained, showing the points on the map with a trembling finger. "And?" I asked, my voice cutting through. His jaw locked, and his Adam's apple bo

Chapter 38

Reyna's POVI was standing on the balcony, with nothing but a towel, just staring at the stars. Because I couldn't get any sleep no matter how hard I tried, I had decided to take a late-night shower and enjoy the cold breeze of the night. Maybe then, I would be able to catch some sleep.I was so engrossed in enjoying the moment, I barely heard the main door open and close. "Reyna?" King's Zion's voice drifted through, startling me. I turned quickly, the movement catching the corner of the towel tucked under my armpit and loosened the hem of the towel. I wasn't fast enough to hold it in place, it slid down my body fast, and pooled around my legs, just as my eyes fell on the king, standing in the middle of my room, his eyes staring right at my exposed body.I froze under his stare, and even though my first reaction was supposed to be bending down and picking up the towel, I couldn't move. I watched with goosebumps surfacing on my skin as he took a step forward. The cold breeze was long

Chapter 39

Reyna's POV"Are you okay?" Amelia asked, standing by the door when I finally opened up."Um, yes, why?" I responded, stepping aside for her to get in. She was carrying a breakfast tray in her hands, something that I didn't like because it made me forget that I was a slave. That I was the one supposed to be serving and not be served."You look..." She ran her eyes over me before she sniffed loudly. "Oh," that's all she said. At first I didn't understand her reaction until I realized that my arousal must have been heavy in the air. I lowered my face, clearing my throat, avoiding eye contact with her."There is a banquet this evening," she said after rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly."A banquet?" I echoed, pulling my head back."Yes," she said. "The king ordered one for everyone living and working inside the palace." She crossed the room toward the small sitting area and placed the tray on the table. "Servants, soldiers, guards, officials...basically everyone.""Including slaves?
