Elena woke to a ceiling she didn't recognize, white and unfamiliar, and the first thing she understood, before the room fully resolved itself around her, was that everything hurt in a way that felt distant, muffled, the particular haze of medication doing more work than her own body currently could. The second thing she understood was that she wasn't alone. Luca sat in a chair pulled close to the bed, close enough that she could have reached him without much effort if her arm had cooperated, and something in his posture, rigid, unmoving, his attention fixed entirely on her face, told her he'd been sitting exactly like that for longer than she could account for. "You're awake." His voice came out rougher than she remembered it, none of its usual flat, unhurried certainty, and Elena found herself, even through the fog of whatever medication currently ran through her system, cataloguing the difference the way she'd learned to catalogue every small variation in him over the past five

Marchetti had been standing post outside Elena's recovery room for three weeks now, and he'd learned, in that time, more about the particular texture of this house's quiet war than he'd expected a guard assignment to teach him.He noticed the pattern of Luca's visits first, unfailingly regular, twice daily at minimum, sometimes lingering considerably longer than the brief check in his early visits had been. He noticed, too, the particular way Luca's voice changed the moment he crossed that threshold, softer than the flat, controlled tone Marchetti was used to hearing him use with everyone else in this house, staff and enemies alike, a voice reserved, as far as Marchetti could tell, for exactly one person. He'd worked for Luca Moreau for nearly three years, long enough to have developed a careful, practiced instinct for reading the man's moods from a distance, the particular set of his shoulders before a difficult negotiation, the flat, unhurried calm that preceded violence, the brisk

The first time Luca forbade her from leaving the mansion grounds entirely, Elena understood, standing in his study listening to him lay out the new restriction with the same unhurried certainty he brought to everything, that whatever careful balance had existed between them before the attack had shifted into something considerably more absolute."I want to walk in the garden without an escort," Elena said, keeping her voice level despite the frustration building beneath it. "I'm not asking to leave the grounds, Luca. I'm asking to walk fifty feet from this house without someone standing three paces behind me.""No." Luca didn't look up from the papers on his desk, the single word carrying no room for negotiation at all."Why not?" Elena ask."Because the leak that got you shot hasn't been resolved yet." Luca finally set down his pen, his eyes lifting to meet hers with the particular, flat intensity she'd learned to recognize as the outer edge of his patience. "Because whoever betrayed

Elena noticed the pattern before she let herself name it, the particular, unwelcome rhythm of her own evenings rearranging themselves around a knock that had stopped coming. It had been three weeks since Luca had last come to her room at night, not since the shooting, not since the long, careful weeks of recovery that had filled their hours instead with physical therapy sessions and quiet, businesslike visits that never once extended into anything resembling what their nights used to be. Elena told herself, in the beginning, that this was simply practical, a wound healing, a body not yet ready for anything that might strain it. She told herself that for the first two weeks, and mostly believed it.By the third week, she found herself doing something she couldn't fully explain even to herself. She'd catch herself, some evenings, washing longer than the day's grime actually required, applying the small vial of perfume Mrs. Bianchi had once given her for an occasion Elena could no long

The physical therapy sessions had ended weeks ago, the therapist's visits reduced to a single monthly check to confirm the shoulder's continued healing, but Elena still walked the same slow circuit through the garden most mornings, more out of habit now than necessity.Luca had kept joining her, more mornings than not. Neither of them had ever actually agreed to it. It had simply become the shape their mornings took."You don't need to keep walking with me," Elena said, one particular morning, the air was cold enough that her breath showed in front of her. "My shoulder's healed. The therapist cleared me weeks ago.""I'm aware," Luca said, his hands clasped loosely behind his back, matching her pace the way he always did."Then why are you still here?" Elena asked."I like the mornings better this way," Luca said. "I noticed it more on the days you were too tired to come.""That sounds like you missed it," Elena said."Maybe I did," Luca said, and didn't argue further, and Elena, wal
