Chapter 31: Heart Of The Ocean

Outside the Royal Art Hall, the rain had finally stopped. The washed streets of London glimmered beneath the streetlights, their wet surfaces reflecting a cool sheen. Liam parked the car beside a quiet riverside park, away from the traffic and the fading noise of the West End.Inside the car, soft jazz flowed through the speakers, smooth and low, shutting out the vulgarity of the exhibition hall and the crowd they had left behind.Romy leaned back against the leather passenger seat; her face turned slightly toward the window. Beyond the glass, the Thames moved endlessly under the night sky, dark and unhurried. Without the weight of Kensington Manor pressing down on her, without Devon’s suffocating questions, she felt more relaxed than she had in days.“Thank you for today, Liam,” she said, turning back to him.“No, you don’t need to thank me.”Liam turned off the engine and looked at her. The faint light emanating from the riverside lighting traced the strong lines of his profile, sof

Chapter 32: Let’s Celebrate

Liam’s words sank into the deepest part of Devon’s fear, like a poisoned needle.Moving in, Devon grasped Liam’s collar at the front of his shirt. His grip tightened. The control that always served him so well in boardrooms and negotiations seemed dangerously fragile now, barely held together now by pride and force of habit.“That’s enough, Devon.” Romy’s cool voice came from behind Liam. She didn’t look at either of the men. Instead, she reached up and removed the brilliant Heart of the Ocean necklace from around her neck, and placed it carefully on the passenger seat of Liam’s car.Only then did she look at Devon. There was no sorrow in her eyes. No accusations or anger.“Didn’t we agree on thirty days?” she calmly said. “Let’s go home. I’m tired.”Home.That single word pulled Devon back from the edge of his temper. He released Liam’s collar with a sharp movement. He patted Liam on the shoulder, as if to dismiss him. He didn’t even pause to smooth down the disarray of his own ruffl

Chapter 33: Living In Her Shadow

“Please don’t blame Devon. He told me hasn’t slept properly for days because he was planning your birthday surprise for tonight.”Caroline wiped at her tears and continued in a small, broken voice.“I know Devon is difficult to read sometimes, but he’s actually very simple once you understand him. I’ve known him for a long time. He responds to softness, not pressure. He hates it when people touch what belongs to him, especially things he cares for the most —”She stopped, as if realizing the wording might be inappropriate, then corrected herself with a fragile smile.“I mean, things he is used to. Like his coffee. He always takes only one sugar cube. He likes to sleep with English cedarwood incense. Even his favourite cars are always dark gray.”Caroline looked at Romy with innocent sincerity. “But of course, you’ve taken care of him for these past three years. You must know his habits even better than I do.”One sugar cube.English cedarwood incense.Dark gray cars.Romy felt herself

Chapter 34: The Trouble With Mangoes

“I spoke up for you every time, Romy,” Caroline declared.Romy stood very still. The words ‘couldn’t bear children’ were laid bare in the room, wrapped in the false compassion of someone claiming to defend her.“I felt badly for you, Romy,” Caroline continued, a tear sliding down her face. Her tone was full of sacrifice, yet every sentence carried the sting of condescension.“You saved Devon from the freezing sea when he couldn’t swim. He would have died! You literally exchanged your health for this marriage, for the title of Mrs Kensington. No matter how much I love him, I vowed I must never be the woman who takes away your entitlement.”She lifted a trembling hand and covered her mouth, as though the pain had finally become too much.“I was willing to leave London forever. I was willing to disappear from your lives. How could you take every bit of my kindness and trample it under your feet now?”She turned toward Devon, weeping openly. “I’m sorry, Devon. I really shouldn’t have come

Chapter 35: You Will Never Read Me

“Yes, I did.” Romy interrupted him. She continued.“You came home around two in the morning. My face was still swollen. I stood in the entrance foyer with the medicine bottle in my hand and asked if you knew I was allergic to mango.”She looked at him. “You were changing your shoes. You didn’t even lift your head. You said, ‘For small matters like that, tell the housekeeper next time. Don’t bother me with it.’”Devon’s lips parted. No answer came.“Of course. You don’t remember,” Romy said flatly. Her gaze returned to the birthday cake. The words “Happy Birthday” looked almost obscene above the fruit that could have sent her to hospital.“You remember how Caroline takes her coffee. You remember the cedarwood scent she likes. You remember the color she prefers well enough to challenge the Evans family in public over a dress.” Her voice stayed low, without tremor. “But after three years of marriage, you don’t remember that your wife could die from eating mango.”Devon went rigid. The

No involvement. In the past.Nothing to do with this. Each word pressed into Romy like the dull edge of a rusted knife.“She came here tonight with good intentions,” Devon continued. “In her own way, she was trying to protect your dignity. You can be angry with me, but you shouldn’t take all that hurt out on a friend who came here to make peace. It isn’t fair.”Romy’s mouth curved ever so slightly. She turned over and pushed herself up. Sitting in the dim moonlight, her eyes glittered. There was a stubbornness in them now, forged by three years of being misunderstood and overlooked.“Devon, please. Just once, can you open your eyes and really look?”He went still.“I have never wanted to target her,” Romy said. “I have no interest in trampling on her dignity. I only wanted to be your wife.”The words came out quiet at first. Then something in her broke through the restraint.“Even if whatever relationship you two once had is in the past, even if we needed more time, could there at lea

Chapter 37: Always Another Way

By morning, the rain over London had cleared completely. The sky was a clear, washed blue. For once, Devon didn’t leave the house at dawn. He waited in the drawing room until Romy joined him, dressed and ready, he picked up two tickets and waved them in the air.“There’s no work today,” he said, with enthusiasm. His upbeat tone left no room for refusal. “I’m taking you to a concert. I know you’ll like it; it’s getting excellent reviews. I’m thinking it might help you relax and enjoy yourself.”Romy looked at the two gold-embossed symphony tickets in his hand. Her kept her expression deliberately neutral but in truth, she had never cared much for concerts. Going to the symphony and pretending to like it, sounded like upper-class stuffy pretensions.Compared with sitting stiffly in some elegant hall, dressed up to appreciate complicated classical movements she barely understood, she preferred the honest vitality in the atmosphere at the aquatic center. The clean slice of a whistle throu

Chapter 38: A Thorny Cheer Squad

“I’ve already spoken with my uncle, and his team is drafting a sponsorship proposal,” Caroline continued. “If I can’t join the British Swimming Team as an athlete, then I’ll join in another capacity. I’ll become the national association’s largest brand sponsor. I’ll personally help select and build the best cheer squad to support the team throughout the Commonwealth Games tour, on behalf of Thorne Enterprises.”As she spoke, she looked up at him with a playful smile.Trailing behind the pair, Romy watched Caroline’s performance silently. The flamboyant, fitted gown outlined her figure perfectly, and the hint of flirtation in her tone made the conversation sound less like business and more like a private game.“Devon, on the actual day of the competition, what do you think I should wear? Should I wear the cheer squad uniform myself, to support our swimmers from the sidelines?”Devon gave a short, amused laugh. “A cheer squad?”He raised an eyebrow and followed her lead with easy praise

Chapter 39: The Tang Of Chlorine

During their thirty-day attempt to save their marriage, even this supposedly thoughtful date — the location, the performance, the entire arrangement — had actually been planned by Devon’s first love.In effect, his grand gesture to give Romy an uplifting experience was tainted by the interference of another woman. He couldn’t even date his own wife without Caroline’s ever-present shadow coming between them.Ding.The vibration of her phone inside her handbag interrupted the suffocating tenderness as he pleaded his case.Romy pulled her hand out of his, and took out her phone. On the screen was a message from Coach Miller. She quickly scanned what he sent.Coach Miller: Romy, Liam has told me your decision. Good girl. The national team’s door has always been open to you. But if you’ve decided to compete in the Commonwealth trials, we can’t waste another second. Two o’clock this afternoon. Bring your gear to St George’s Aquatic Center. You haven’t trained properly in three years. We nee

Chapter 40: Taking Back What Was Hers

After three years away, the pool was colder and more unforgiving than Romy had anticipated. The moment she pushed off from the starting block, the water closed around her with a sharp force that brought every nerve in her body instantly awake. The noise of the outside world narrowed to breath, motion, and the hard pressure of water against muscle. One length became another. Then another. At first, her body resisted her. Three years of absence had left weight in places where there used to be speed. Her shoulders burned too soon. Her legs didn’t answer with the clean power she remembered. Every stroke carried an accusing heaviness, as though the water itself was asking where she had been.Romy gritted her teeth and kept going. Then, slowly, something older than pain began to return. Her rhythm rediscovered itself in pieces. The angle of her hand. The line of her body. The turn of her head for air. The clean, ruthless economy of movement that had once made coaches go silent along the poo
