Chapter 41: The Pen That Knows

Mr. Wellington's POV I kept staring into space, into nothingness. If only there was something like black magic I could use on Ethan. He's so adamant. Tony wasn't this stubborn brat. Tony was soft. He was kind. Inside and out. He was generous. He was strong and efficient. He was the perfect heir to the Wellington empire. He was my everything. I had shaped him. I had raised him well. But death just decided to take him away like that. I sighed heavily. I wheeled myself toward a small wardrobe that stood just a few inches tall. I opened the last drawer, then reached beneath the bottom panel from inside the wardrobe. My fingers found the tiny hidden button. I pressed it. A small key slid out. I picked it up and unlocked the first drawer. It opened. I took out the black pen and stared at it, hesitating. Then I pressed the button at the bottom. A crackling sound filled the room. *"All you could've done was step down, but you just kept pushing,"* his voice echoed. *"

Chapter 42: Regret The Name Wellington

Maya POVThe ride came to an end.I thanked Josh and went inside, but before I could reach the front door, he called out to me."Wait," he said, catching up to me quickly. He gave me a small bag, then turned and walked away. I stared down at the bag, then slowly opened it. I pulled out a phone box and gasped.A phone?! Like, for real!I turned in the direction of Josh, but he was long gone. He bought me a new phone? How did he know I didn't have one?I paused. Was it Mr. Wellington? But I never told him anything like that, and he never saw me without a phone either. Then how did Josh…Silence stretched in my head.Either way, a wave of relief washed over me. I'm really grateful to whoever got me the phone. Or maybe it was Josh himself. Yeah, I think I should thank him. Even though I saw no reason for him getting me a phone, I still smiled and went inside—but I regretted everything immediately. He stood there, anger blazing in his eyes."Where were you?" His voice was ice-cold as

Chapter 43: No One Touches What’s Mine

Maya POV The sound was unbearable. I kept turning and turning until I finally sprang up. My eyes darted to the door. Where was that sound coming from? I wondered what Ethan was up to now. I dragged my weak self out of bed, every muscle aching. My eyes fell on the clock, which read 10:34 PM. Wow, I really slept that long. I walked to the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, and pulled my hair back into my usual ponytail. Opening the door, I stepped out and followed the noise as it grew louder and louder down the hall. Just down in the living room, lots and lots of people were there. Dancing, smoking... some were seen making out, and some had passed out on the couches. The whole room was a huge mess. The smell of alcohol hung in the air under the dim blue light. I could hardly recognize a single face in the room. My mind flashed back to what Ethan had mentioned this morning about a party. Did he mean this? The whole place was in disarray, but nobody was coming up

Chapter 44: This Never Happened

Maya POVMy heart couldn’t stop beating. It pounded so hard I feared it might burst right out of my chest. He pulled back just a little, staring directly into my eyes like he could see right through me. His green eyes were so beautiful and so enchanting... I was already completely lost just looking at them.I couldn't bring myself to look away.Neither of us said anything for a moment. We just stared at each other, reading each other's minds in the quiet room. His gaze dropped back to my lips before rising to meet my eyes again.Slowly, his hand reached up to gently brush away the sweat near my earlobe. His thumb traced down my jawline to my cheek, softly caressing my skin. Then he paused."I’m a madman, ain’t I?" His voice was low, sending a cold shiver straight down my spine.I swallowed hard, unable to speak."You’re perfect, Maya," he said quietly, his hot breath brushing against my face. "You don’t need someone like me. I want you to keep hating me... that’s the only way you ca

Chapter 45: Day 9: Meeting With Her

Maya POVDay 9,I watched as the darkness slowly gave way to the morning sun.Golden rays slipped through the curtains, filling the room with a soft glow.I just lay there.Listening to my own heartbeat.Just like I expected...Sleep never came.I had tossed from one side of the bed to the other until I finally gave up.Every time I closed my eyes...I saw him. Those green eyes. That kiss. His voice."You're perfect, Maya."My face instantly warmed.Jeez.Why won't my brain let me breathe?Ping. My phone screen lit up on the nightstand. I reached out, my fingers wrapping around the cool glass. A single text from James sat on the screen:“Maya? Let me give you a quick call.”Before I could even process the words, the screen switched to an incoming call. James.I hesitated for a second before sliding the bar to answer.“Maya,” his voice came through the speaker.“Good morning, Mr. James,” I said, keeping my tone carefully measured."How are you doing? The way you reached out first yes

Chapter 46: I Didn’t Kill Anyone

Ethan's POVI kept staring at the ceiling of my room. The silence was killing me.Nothing made sense.Nothing at all.But one thing stood out loud and clear.I was falling for Maya. How did it even happen?I had personally invited Sofia Hart over, a day early just to get Maya out of my system. I thought spending the night with another woman would help me forget her.Instead...I couldn't even bring myself to touch Sofia. The entire time, all I could think about was Maya.I groaned and rubbed both hands over my face.I should've let Zack have his way with her.I shouldn't have intervened. But my stupid heart just wouldn't let me stand there and watch. The thought alone made my chest tighten.No...If anyone was going to touch her...It should've been me.Only me.I should've been the only one allowed to feel the warmth of her skin. The only one allowed to hear her breathing. The only one allowed to..."Fuck..."I shut my eyes tightly. What the hell was happening to me?She had done som

Chapter 47: Under The Duvet

Vera POVI flipped through one television channel after another, but nothing caught my interest.News.Movies.Music.Sports.Nothing.Still, my thumb kept pressing the button.Maybe if I kept searching long enough, I'd find something capable of drowning out the thoughts in my head. But they refused to leave. No matter what appeared on the screen...My mind always found its way back to him.Rita stood quietly a few feet away, watching me with worried eyes.I knew she wanted to say something. She had been watching me for nearly ten minutes now.My eyes burned terribly.I had cried so much that my vision still looked blurry.Even blinking hurt."If that tea gets cold..." Rita finally spoke, crossing her arms. "...I won't be your sister anymore."I didn't answer.I didn't even look at her.Instead, I pressed the button again.Another channel.Another face.Another useless program. She let out a frustrated groan before marching over. The remote disappeared from my hand."What is wrong wit

Chapter 48: Audrey

Ethan POVI kept staring out of the airplane window. My jaw was locked so tightly it was beginning to hurt. The veins along my neck stood out, refusing to hide no matter how hard I tried to calm myself. My heart hadn't stopped pounding ever since Marcus sent me that picture.I couldn't stay back in Valeriana.I just couldn't.I had to come.I had to see everything with my own eyes. The image flashed through my mind again.Maya...Sitting inside a car.A man beside her.Caldrane.My fingers curled into a fist. She had some explaining to do.First, she ran out barefoot in the middle of the night. To him.She didn't even care how cold it was outside. She had almost spent the entire night out there before I found her.Back then...I convinced myself she was only desperate to see whoever that man was.Her lover. The one she kept hidden. And now...She had gone all the way to another country. To see him again.A bitter laugh escaped my lips.So I had been right all along.Maybe every word s

Chapter 49: I Am Still The Boss

Mr. Wellington POVI slowly flipped through the pages of the newspaper resting on my lap.My morning tea sat untouched on the small table beside me, its steam slowly disappearing into the quiet room. The mansion was unusually peaceful.Just the way I liked it.My eyes skimmed over the business headlines one after another until one particular article caught my attention.Whitaker Group acquires another commercial estate in France.A faint smile tugged at my lips."So...""You finally did it."I leaned back against my wheelchair, reading every single line.Another piece of land.Another successful acquisition.Another step forward.I couldn't help but smile.A student had truly surpassed his teacher.Years ago...When Arthur Whitaker's company was barely surviving, he had come to me.Young.Desperate.Determined.He had wanted someone to believe in him.I did.I gave him opportunities no one else was willing to give.We worked together.Built connections together.Watched his company ri

Chapter 50: No Bringing Her Back (1)

Maya POVMy eyelids felt unbelievably heavy. It was as though someone had placed weights on them.Slowly, I forced them open.Bright light immediately stung my eyes.I shut them again. Then, after taking a small breath, I tried once more. This time they stayed open."Maya... can you hear me?"James' voice reached me through the thick fog clouding my head.I slowly turned toward the sound. My body wouldn't cooperate.Every tiny movement felt difficult, almost as if I wasn't in control of my own limbs anymore. The first thing I saw was James. He was sitting beside the bed, leaning forward with worry written all over his face. His brows were tightly drawn together, and one of his hands was wrapped around mine. His grip was warm.Comforting."Are you okay?" he asked softly.I tried answering, but my lips barely moved.Instead, I slowly shook my head.He let out a quiet sigh."It'll take a few more minutes for the medicine to wear off."Medicine? My brows knitted together.Medicine for wha
