Worried.

(SLADE'S POV) The sound of the first bell sent everyone into a frenzy at once. Today was Friday and it meant that any rule breaking could result in detention which also came with a one hour sanitation on Saturday. No one wanted Friday detention. "Hey! Dickhead!!" Someone slapped me on my shoulder. It was Germaine, his voice was imprinted in my brain and his unexpected slaps as well. We started walking side by side out of the locker room where he had freshened up after our practices. We had a game next week and that meant intense training and workout. Early morning practice and late evening some times too. The season was only beginning. "How's Kaira doing?" Makaira. Just her name and everything was flooding back into my head. Every single thing I was trying to forget. The way she had kissed me yesterday and the way I kissed her back. The gift bag I had kept this morning and hidden to watch her pick it up. "Fucking hell Slade!" Germaine was snapping his fingers i

The Almost...

(BACK TO KAIRA'S POV) "Of all the people on this earth to touch me, it had to be the help." The words hurt me but I suppressed it and focused on the wrong action I committed; I had walked into her, and ruined her shirt "I am terribly sorry, Shelly." My hands grasped each other briefly before I started searching through my bag. "I have a napkin and we can go to the bathroom and—" "Oh drop the act, you snake!" Shelly snapped at me with what sounded like a screech. I didn't know that it was possible for the room to become even more silent. Everyone seemed to be glued to their spots and holding their breaths. Shelly took a menacing step forward that made me move backwards. Goosebumps filled my skin as I remembered an incident in middle school when a few of us watched Shelly make a girl put a lizard in her mouth. "Tell me, do you think I'm a fool like you?" Her voice was low but her eyes were searing. "I'm not stupid. You did this intentionally so that I can have a bad day l

Why Is He Here?

(KAIRA'S POV) "Kaira!" I turned sharply, shocked that someone was calling out for me as I hurried to my second class for the day. And then, a face with bright smile and framed with curly brown hair came into sight. The guy from the Inkclub meeting, the one who stood up to Kathy for me. He got to me panting dramatically like he had just run a marathon even though I watched him push past people as he crossed from one end to the other. "Oh my goodness! What's happening? Why the hell is everyone so rowdy?" He said hooking his arm into mine and steering us in the direction of our next class. "I thought this was giving small town vibe and so the kids would be less... chaotic." I smiled at him. “I told you, no one wants a written note today." I explained to him. "Well they don't need to be like savages! Some guy elbowed me in the ribs because he was trying to fly or whatever. I mean, I almost didn't see you and I have been looking hard." He pointed out raising a finger up as h

Worse Than All Of Them.

(SLADE'S POV) I had been waiting for thirty minutes which could be two times longer than I have ever had to wait in my entire life. Then, she comes with a boy glued to her side, laughing at something he whispered. Every few steps their shoulders bumped. Close enough that my jaw tightened before I even realized it. He is probably one of those fuckers throwing themselves on her on the internet. My eyes are fixated on her, watching her walk in my direction until she stops. She whispers something to this stranger who glances at me and then back at her. Then the bastard leans in for a hug, gives me one more glance before finally walks away. My hands ball into strong fists as I watch him walk away. I wanted to know his name. I return my gaze back to Makaira and she looked anything but pleased to meet me. Her lips were pushed forward in an annoyed but cute manner, her arms grasping huge books that made her unable to fold her arms. Her pretty hair bounced or swayed as she st

The Former Neighbors.

(KAIRA'S POV) I watched the car drive off, feeling like it was leaving with a huge chunk of my heart. I could still smell Slade around me and maybe that's why I didn't want to move. It helped me jog back, helped me replay the way his eyes looked sad, so sad that it was hard to believe that those eyes belonged to him. So I stood there for some seconds and then steadied my books with my knee, before walking out of the parking lot. I thought I would feel even better than I felt after he left. But my emotions had a decline. I had told him off, for the second time today. It felt like I was winning for once by getting to turn him down and oh it felt so good to tell him I didn't want his help. The same feeling I got when I told him in the lab that he caused everything. But then, just like the time before that, there was some kind of guttural feeling that came with it. My tummy hurt and I didn't want any more flashbacks. "He couldn't even give a proper apology! Because he doesn't want

He Came Back.

(KAIRA'S POV) I could hear them coming after me, loud and heavy slippers echoing through the lonely area. They were fast runners because even though I got a head start, they appeared in no time. I let out the loudest scream I could, just before one of them grabbed me into his arms. My screams turned into muffled cries and so I sank my teeth into his palm—but to my disappointment, he didn't let go. He was in pain, though. "Son of a bitch!" He cursed with a deep groan. It was Brent, and he was looking at me like he wanted to grab my neck. "What?" Corbin ran forward, glanced at us and started to move around, eyes surveying the area. My heart raced even harder than before. "She bit me!" Brent growled angrily at me. Then he grabbed me and shook me hard, all the while keeping me from screaming. "I always knew that you were so feisty. Going around acting like you were a good girl—" "That's enough, Brent. We have to go now!" Corbin said in a hushed tone that sent chills down my spine.

The Silence.

(SLADE’S POV) The Silence in the car was deafening. And I told myself it was for the best. Because one word and i would have gone back there to create permanent changes in the lives of those cursed bastards! My heart started racing so I had to take in a deep breath and remind myself that Makaira was okay, she was safe. Terrified of me after watching me be so violent but she’s not in danger anymore. It boils my blood to think of what could have happened if I had not shown up on time. My fists tightened on the steering wheel. I stole a glance at Makaira. She was still in the same position she had been since the car started moving. Head against the window and eyes glued to it. Each time, I told myself that I would try hard not to look at her. But then again, I found myself helplessly loosing. Besides, seeing her was like throwing a blanket of comfort over me even though she wasn’t looking directly at me. We arrived at home and I rushed to her side to help her out but she was

By The Window Sill.

(KAIRA’S POV) I waited until Slade had disappeared down the hall before I went in to my room and shut the door behind me. The silence welcomed me as I sat on the bed, it also brought back a string of flashbacks from this afternoon. I shut my eyes to block out the memories but they flooded my head. I could almost feel the hands of Corbin and Brent on my body. I hugged myself tightly but I could still seem them now, wriggling and groaning on the floor and then there was Slade, fuming over them. “Gosh!” I whispered to myself as I stood up and began pacing about the large room. Slade had been unrecognizable!! So furious!! He looked like he wanted to tear them apart and I don’t know how it made me feel. Scared? Thrilled? Shocked? Aware!! But above all, there was an undeniable feeling of gratitude. Because he came back for me. Even after I told him not to. It was while I was pacing about that I noticed something, I hadn’t noticed before. At the extreme end of the room. There

I’ll Always Come Back.

(KAIRA’S POV) I felt someone hovering over me before I even opened my eyes. A shadow. A presence. The air around me had shifted, heavy and warm. My heart jolted and every instinct screamed at me to move, to fight, to run…. Until my eyes snapped open. Slade. He was crouched in front of me, close enough that I could see every detail of his face. His hair was disheveled. There was a cut on his lip, a dark bruise forming along his jawline. My gaze dropped to his knuckles, bruised and split open, blood dried and cracking across his skin. He looked like he had just stepped out of a war. My breath caught and I stared at him, frozen. He stared back. For a moment, neither of us moved. The only thing I could hear was my own heartbeat, loud and frantic in the silence. "Slade?" My voice came out as a whisper. He didn't respond. He just watched me. Like he was making sure I was real. Like he was making sure I was okay. Then his gaze dropped to the phone in my hands. The one he had

BULLET.

(KAIRA’S POV) The door clicked behind me and everywhere became so silent that for a moment, I was certain that Slade could hear my heart pounding loudly. But it was only for a second, before a single clap turned on one light, in the center of the ceiling. I turned around and Slade was behind me, so close that I took an involuntary step back. I caught a wave of his scent and released a shaky breath. Then, he dumped his duffel bag on the ground. “I’ll get the first aid box.” He tossed his phone on the bed and walked away, leaving me standing in the room. I walked closer to the bed and sat. Even though I tried not to, I found myself looking around which sent a torrent of emotions through me. I was instantly thrown back to five years ago. The room where it all started. Where Slade and I met for the first time. My eyes fell on the side table where the snowball had been sitting, majestic…. Until I broke it. PING! I gasped, snapping out of the past and turning my attention to t
