Boarding school?

(KAIRA’S POV) “Yeah." Mum said with a heavy sigh. "Tom told me on the flight back to PineCrest that he wants to have Slade punished for being a bully. He's thinking suspension or maybe even boarding school." I couldn't help the deep gasp that escaped me. Even Mum looked up at me in surprise, her eyebrows raised. "Boarding school?" I repeated in disbelief. The words felt foreign on my tongue, like they didn't belong in the same sentence as Slade. "I tried to talk him out of it…" Mum was speaking in the background, but in my mind, I was far gone. Boarding school. They wanted to send Slade away. My chest tightened, and I felt like I couldn't breathe. The air in the room was suddenly too thin, too insufficient for my lungs. "Kaira? Kaira, are you listening to me?" I blinked, forcing myself back to the present. Mum was looking at me with concern etched across her face. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" "I said, I tried to talk him out of it. But Tom is furious." She shook

The Fear Of Betrayal.

(SLADE'S POV) The last time my Dad accompanied me to my school was the morning of Mum's disappearance. Dad had been forced to get me ready for school and accompany me with the driver because our nanny had called in sick and there was no one else. It had never been his job to do all that. He was a businessman, a CEO, a man who had people for those kinds of things. But that morning, we had woken up late, and Mum's bedroom was empty. Her side of the bed was cold, her clothes still in the closet, her toothbrush still in the bathroom. She had simply vanished. Dad had assured me throughout the ride to school that Mum had only gone somewhere and he was going to bring her back. I was eight years old, and I believed him with every fiber of my being. I believed him because I had to. Because the alternative was too terrifying to consider. She never came back. Today, being in the car with Dad was a lot more different than the last time. Today, the car was as silent as a graveyard. Not even t

The Plea.

(KAIRA'S POV) Slade's eyes looked empty, but I know him a little to know that his eyes were anything but empty. There was a storm raging behind that blank stare, a war he was fighting silently. I could see it in the slight tightening of his jaw, the almost imperceptible clench of his fists at his sides. We were only a few feet apart, but I felt a mountain away from him. I wanted to know what he was thinking about, why he was looking at me like that. Like he was trying to memorize my face. Like he was saying goodbye. Was he angry with me for all that was happening? For following him last night? For uncovering his secrets? For forcing him to confess? He had turned himself in and now he was facing the consequences. And I couldn't shake the feeling that he was doing it for me. That he was sacrificing himself because he thought he didn't deserve anything better. "Kaira!" Mum placed her arm around me, pulling me out of my thoughts and away from the depth of Slade's eyes. "I told Tom you

The Suspension

(KAIRA'S POV) I thought about Slade throughout the day. I was refreshing the gossip platforms every three minutes in case they had any new concerning Slade. My thumb had developed a mind of its own, scrolling, refreshing, scrolling again, desperate for any scrap of information. To make matters worse, Slade wasn't in any of his classes today. The empty seat in every period felt like a gaping wound, a constant reminder that he was somewhere else, dealing with something I couldn't help with. That made my anxiety grow by every second, each minute stretching into an eternity. It was no wonder that the moment I heard the sound of the last bell ringing, I was already trying to get out of school. My bag was packed before the echo had even faded, my feet already carrying me towards the door. "Oh my Gosh, Kaira! Do you have a curfew or something? I can't keep up with your ridiculous pace." Cameron said with a frustrated grunt, behind me. I turned to see him jogging to catch up, his designer

I Care For You.

(KAIRA'S POV) My hands clutched the takeout pack tightly while my fingers drummed against it. I had knocked. Twice. Loudly. And I was just contemplating on knocking for the third and final time—or just taking this as a sign to go back—when someone folded with the door handle and the door opened. Slade was breathing heavily, with sweat dripping from strands of his hair, from his face, down his shirtless torso which looked broad, hard and shiny. His chest was rising and falling rapidly, and I could see the muscles in his arms flexing, like he'd been in the middle of a workout. He cleared his throat loudly, and I dragged my gaze up to his face. His eyes were guarded, wary, like he wasn't sure what to make of my presence. "I came to see you." I said softly, and then my eyes flew open. "I mean, I came to give you this." I lifted up the pack, feeling the heat centering on my cheeks. "Come in." He said, holding the door open. I went in, clutching the takeaway pack to my chest

The Tears

(KAIRA'S POV) At first, I wasn't sure that Slade had heard me. My voice had been so low that only I had heard it, and I was relieved from making that mistake. But then, he let me go, and I was sure that he had heard me. I pushed my back against the door to not lose balance. He took some steps back, keeping his eyes on me. My arms reached out and wrapped around myself, rubbing my arms as I prepared myself for his hurtful words. Instead, he shook his head at me, slowly. "You don't care about me." He said softly. "Wh-why do you think so?" I couldn't help but ask. "Because you don't." He said, and for the first time I had ever heard him, his voice was raised. "You can't care about me. It's not possible." "I know you hate me for everything. And that's fine, you don't have to pretend like you actually care about me." He said with a scoff, turning his back on me as he walked about the room. His movements were restless, agitated, like a caged animal. "I'm not pretending." I said, my v

The Sharing Circle.

(KAIRA'S POV) "Oh my God! Earth to Makaira!" Cameron snapped his fingers repeatedly in front of my face, and I blinked rapidly in response to register my surroundings. The fluorescent lights of the empty classroom buzzed overhead, casting their harsh glow across the scattered desks and the three of us huddled together in the back corner. Cameron, Jackie, and I were seated together in an empty classroom at the end of the day. If I can remember quite correctly, Cameron wants us to meet because he wants to enter a fashion contest and he would like to use us as his models. He'd been talking about it for days, waving around sketches and fabric samples, his excitement practically vibrating off him. The problem is that I don't know what he has been saying or how long we have even spent in this class. My mind had been elsewhere, lost in a maze of thoughts I couldn't escape. Every time I tried to focus, Slade's face appeared in my mind. His words echoed in my ears. The pain in his eyes haun

The Party.

(SLADE'S POV)I hung up the phone and sat in the car for a long moment, staring at the fountain in the center of the driveway.A party. What the hell was I thinking?Germaine's words echoed in my head. "There's no better time to do this, Horton."He was right. The house had been too quiet lately. Too empty. Ever since Makaira arrived, the silence had become unbearable—not because it was silent, but because I could feel her presence in every room. Her scent lingered in the hallways. Her laughter drifted through the walls. And every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face.I ran a hand through my hair, frustrated. This was supposed to be simple. She was supposed to be a temporary inconvenience. A favor to my father. Nothing more. But nothing about Makaira was simple. She infuriated me. The way she challenged me, the way she looked at me like she could see right through my carefully constructed walls. The way she defended that Cameron idiot with such fierce loyalty after knowing him for tw

The Aftermath

(SLADE'S POV)I stood there for what felt like an eternity, frozen in the middle of the crowd that had already moved on to the next distraction. The music pounded in my ears, the lights flashed across my vision, but all I could see was her face. The way she'd looked at me when Shelly kissed me.The way she'd walked away. What the hell did I just do?I pushed through the crowd, ignoring the whispers and stares that followed me. I needed to find her. I needed to explain. I didn't even know what I was going to say, but I couldn't let her walk away thinking—Thinking what? That I was just like every other guy who'd used her? That I'd been playing games this whole time?Because maybe I had been. But not anymore.I searched the main floor first. Nothing. The backyard. Empty. The kitchen. Just a couple making out against the counter. Then I heard her voice."—don't ever speak to me in that way."I rounded the corner just in time to see her storm off, her back rigid, her shoulders shaking.I'

The Morning After

(SLADE'S POV)I didn't sleep.I lay in my bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying every moment of the night over and over in my head. The way she'd looked at me. The way she'd kissed me. The way she'd said my name like it meant something."Goodnight, Slade."I closed my eyes and could still feel her lips on mine. What the hell was I doing?I'd spent years building walls around myself. Years keeping everyone at arm's length. Years making sure no one could get close enough to hurt me.And then she'd walked into my life and shattered every single one of them.I ran a hand over my face and groaned. This is insane. She's my step-sister. She's seventeen. She's—She was everything. And that terrified me more than anything.---I gave up on sleep around 6 AM and headed to the gym.The house was still quiet, the remnants of last night's party scattered across the floors. Empty cups, discarded decorations, the faint smell of alcohol and perfume lingering in the air.I ignored it all and lost mys
