They are never going to be friends, and Sebastien reaches this conclusion on a Tuesday evening in the Greymantle townhouse, watching Emre drop off a file, stay twenty minutes, and produce in Sebastien three separate urges to say something he chooses not to and two moments where what he does say is civil without being the civil version of what he's actually thinking. It isn't entirely about her anymore. It's more structural two people whose relationship to the same person is built from such different material that there's no useful overlap, no common ground that doesn't put one of them at a disadvantage just by standing on it.What Emre did for eight years is a thing Sebastien has genuine difficulty locating in any recognisable category of behaviour. Not the worst thing anyone's done objectively, given the surveillance team and the elimination order, it isn't. But it's so specific and so sustained and so quietly confident in its own righteousness that it produces in Sebastien a frustra

Clara has known something was wrong since September, and she doesn't say this immediately. She says it three weeks after the restoration, on a Friday evening in her Marchmont kitchen, over the bottle of wine that's now at the level that facilitates honesty."September," she says. "You came for dinner and you were different. Not sad different. Careful different. Like you'd been thinking about something very large for a long time and had decided what to do about it but hadn't done it yet.""You didn't say anything.""You weren't ready."Clara is thirty-one and has been Veira's best friend for nine years, since a coffee shop on Broughton Street where Clara was working on her PhD thesis and having, more pressingly, a quiet crisis about whether she'd chosen the right field. Veira had sat at the adjacent table, overheard forty seconds of Clara's internal monologue externalising itself under her breath, and asked: what's the structural argument you're most afraid of.Clara had looked at her.

She does not sleep well the night before Geneva, and having examined it carefully, she's confident it isn't anxiety. It's the wakefulness of a mind with a lot to do, rehearsing the doing of it a different condition, and one she recognises from fraud hearings and at least one academic exam she probably should have prepared for better. She lies in the Edinburgh flat she moved into ten days ago, larger than the old one, ground floor with a small garden Variable has been investigating with the focused attention of a researcher in a new archive, and she looks at the ceiling at two in the morning and thinks about tomorrow. The Assembly convenes at ten. Twelve Elder representatives, one neutral convener, and her. The first item is the formal acknowledgment of the conduit's presence, which hasn't happened in three hundred years and which is going to produce a specific quality of room-temperature the moment she walks in.She's prepared for the room-temperature. What she hasn't been prepared fo

He does it in the corridor, falling into step beside her as she comes out of the Assembly room behind Roman and Vassenheim, who have discovered, mid-sentence, that they share a passionate interest in the legal history of the pre-compact period and are conducting the discovery in rapid German that neither of them seems interested in slowing down for anyone else's benefit."Miss Ashcroft.""Elder Croft.""A significant result for a first appearance.""The case was strong.""Cases don't move Elders. Context does." He matches her stride rather than setting it, which she notes. "You've been well prepared.""I've been honest.""Yes." A pause. "I'd like to know who prepared you.""I prepared myself."He looks at her sideways, assessing rather than hostile, which she finds more interesting than hostility would have been. "Emre Yildiz attended Florence. He's your group's neutral representation. He's been a Folklore investigator for seven years with access to every bloodline's internal politica

He leaves for Iceland on a Thursday without telling anyone first, and tells himself this is because the trip is exploratory and there's nothing to report until there is something to report. This is true. The other true thing is that telling the group would produce a conversation he isn't ready for specifically the conversation where Veira says January, Joon-Ho in the tone she's developed for things she's decided have a timeline, and he says I know, and she says then why are you on a plane to Reykjavik, and he doesn't have an answer that doesn't sound like the behaviour of a person who decided to act alone because waiting felt impossible.Which is the behaviour of a person who is still learning. He knows he's still learning. The frequency signal in the Vein data has been running at the back of his probability models for three weeks, and what he knows about probability is that when a signal is present and you don't investigate it, the weight of the uninvestigated thing accumulates in th
