Chapter 31: Garden

[SLOANE]The temple gardens softened at this hour, sunset catching the stone walls in warm amber, bells ringing faint somewhere past the south wing. Insects had started their evening hum. Night flowers unfurled slowly along the path, releasing something sweet into air already cooling from the day's heat. The boys scattered toward their corner the moment we cleared the arch, three sets of feet racing ahead without a backward glance.I settled onto the stone bench, notebook in my lap, with no intention of opening it.Tonight belonged to them.Their project against the south wall had grown considerably since I'd last paid proper attention. Stones stacked into low walls, sticks bridging small gaps, moss packed into corners for reasons only Oliver could explain with full seriousness."This part's the watchtower." He pointed toward a stack three stones high. "You can see the whole garden from up there.""Impressive.""It needed reinforcing." He demonstrated with two sticks, propping one aga

Chapter 32: Third Pack: The Whitecrest Territory

[SLOANE]The gates of Whitecrest rose, weathered and gray, and something about the place sat wrong before I'd fully passed beneath them. Not loud, the way grief sometimes announced itself. Quiet. No pups running the paths between houses. No overlapping conversation drifting from open windows. People spoke lower here, if they spoke at all, and black cloth still hung from three doorframes, left there because no one had found the will to take it down.Fresh claw marks scored the entrance post beside me, four parallel lines carved deep into old wood.'Mourning marks,' Eira offered, subdued. 'Old tradition. For lost family.'The statistics on my desk had never once captured this. The Alpha met me himself, older than Michael, exhaustion carved into every line of a face that had clearly tried to stay composed for his people's sake. His clothes sat immaculately despite everything else about him looking worn past bearing."Dr. Davis." His voice carried genuine gratitude, almost apologetic in i

Chapter 33: Beta Boderick Kane

[BODERICK]Three hours into the drive, and the leather case on my passenger seat had a better seatbelt situation than half the pups back home."You're buckled in tighter than Caine during a border briefing," I told it. "Seems fair, given what you're carrying."Confidential Alpha medical records didn't travel by courier. Couriers lost things. Couriers gossiped in taverns after a long shift, and if word ever got out that Blackthorn's infected roster had gone missing somewhere between two territories, I'd spend the next decade hearing about it from Caine specifically. So, I drove it myself. Simple math.My brain, unsupervised for three hours, wandered exactly where it always wandered lately.Rhys, worse this week than last. Caine, pretending the reports didn't cost him sleep, which fooled absolutely no one who'd known him more than a day. Zane, pretending nobody noticed him pretending, which was somehow worse.Supply requisitions stacked two deep on my desk. Patrol rotations had been rew

Chapter 34: Fourth Pack: The Fenreach Territory

[SLOANE]Eli's face lit up the second I stepped through the infirmary door, same as every morning for the past eleven days."You came back.""I always come back." I set my bag down beside his cot. "Did you sleep?""Mostly." He wrinkled his nose at the memory. "Ms. Bren made me drink the bitter stuff again.""Good. That's the medicine working."The Fenreach healer, Bren, caught my eye over his head and gave a small nod. Fever down. Pulse acceptable. She'd already logged the overnight numbers, and every one of them pointed the same direction.I ran the full exam myself, same as every morning. Temperature, pulse, breath sounds, and the vascular line at his forearm. The veins stayed exactly where they'd stayed for three days now—confined below the elbow, with no further advance overnight. Textbook Stage Two, holding steady, responding.I let myself feel something I rarely allowed on a field visit."If tomorrow looks like today," I told Bren quietly, "I think we've turned the corner on thi

Chapter 35: The Floor

[ISLA]The corridor sat nearly empty around us, emergency lights dim overhead, rain tapping softly against the high windows somewhere past the nurses' station.Sloane hadn't moved. Still against the wall, head bowed slightly, hands loose between her knees.I lowered myself beside her. Not touching—not speaking.I counted breaths instead, the way I always did when words would only get in the way. One minute. Five. Ten, the generator humming steadily somewhere below the floor.Grief kept its own schedule. Interrupting it now would only push her further inside herself, and I'd learned better than that a long time ago.I noticed things Sloane never noticed about herself. One glove, still on. The other was somewhere, forgotten in the last hour of trying. Her ponytail had slipped loose at the crown, strands falling loose around her face. Dried antiseptic marked the cuff of her sleeve, brown against the white. Her shoulders weren't shaking. That told me more than tears would have.Years of w

Chapter 36: The Neutral Site

[RHYS]I couldn't tell if I was walking.Or being carried. The ground tilted sideways.Voices layered over each other."Stage two is progressing faster than expected.""Neutral site authorization confirmed."None of them were familiar.'Soren?'Nothing back. Just static, restless, fever-warped.Everything hurt.Even breathing.Antiseptic filled every inhale, sharp and wrong.Something cold circled my wrist.A restraint.I understood, distantly, this wasn't punishment.Alpha blood shifted under fever surges.Strength turned dangerous when the mind lost the wheel. My claws pressed against skin, threatening. My heartbeat filled my whole skull."The stronger the Alpha blood," someone murmured, "the harder Stage Two burns."Almost funny. My strength was a liability now. Then the air changed. Not sight.Smell.Through antiseptic, through herbs, through blood—Something impossible cut through all of it.Rain.Jasmine, soft, barely there.Soren went still inside me.Not healed.Listening.My

Chapter 37: Before He Woke

[SLOANE]Before sunrise, I stood over the steel sink in the neutral-site prep room. The bottle hissed when I unscrewed it.First layer, wrists. Second layer, pulse points.Neck. Behind the ears. Collarbones. My palms met stainless steel. Everything was clean. Organized. Routine.Except today. The temple lab smelled of disinfectant and ozone; the blocker cut through that, thin and medicinal against my skin.I welcomed the sting. It was a medicine smell, I told myself, not memory.Without speaking his name, I signed the authorization. Rhys Blackthorn sat in the file, letters exact and small. I wrote my initials and opened the isolation door.Stage two was not supposed to look like this. His pulse spiked erratically on the monitor, temperature climbing past anything textbook allowed. His hands cycled between human and claw, uncontrolled, his whole body caught mid-shift over and over in the span of a breath. The local healer stood frozen, chart in hand."He's never presented this fast," s

Chapter 38: The Request

[CAINE]Sloane's morning ended with three words in her own private notebook, though Caine would never know that detail: Too early. She signed the council's acknowledgment of receipt, careful to leave acceptance undecided, and closed the Blackthorn file before anyone could ask her opinion on it.Two territories away, none of that mattered to me yet. I only knew the request had been sent, and now I had to wait for an answer I couldn't control.I hated waiting. Waiting produced nothing. It solved no border dispute, healed no fever, and moved no supply cart from one gate to another. I preferred problems that yielded to direct action, and this one refused to yield to anything but time.Boderick arrived exactly nine minutes late, arms full of maps and reports he dropped onto the conference table with more enthusiasm than the paperwork deserved."Good news," he announced."I don't believe you.""I haven't said it yet.""I've known you long enough."He pressed a hand to his chest, wounded. "T

Chapter 39: Zane's File

[ZANE]The council notification arrived at nine-fourteen.Request Approved. Dr. Sloane Davis will review the Blackthorn Pack's case.Caine would nod at this and return to his reports. I read the sentence twice before I let myself move.Unexplained variables required attention. I pulled a fresh notebook from the drawer and wrote across the top, in block letters, deliberate: Medical Consultant—Dr. Sloane Davis.Beneath it: Objective: Determine reliability. Not distrust. Lives depended on this woman now. That alone earned her a file.I accessed every council archive available to my clearance level.Professional licensing, current and unblemished. Research publications—four in three years, each cited favorably. Teaching history, brief but well-regarded. Conference attendance, minimal but consistent.Everything checked out.Perfectly.I made note of that word specifically, because perfection in a records search usually meant something had been curated rather than merely lived.Graduated wi

Chapter 40: Two Days

[SLOANE]The council envelope sat exactly where I'd left it the night before. Not hidden, not answered. Just present, at the corner of my desk, catching morning light through the lab window while I moved through the rest of my routine.Overnight reports first. Culture checks second. The suppressant trial results waited third, and I read through each patient's response curve with the same attention I gave every case.My eyes crossed the envelope four times before noon.I didn't reach for it once.Isla noticed. She always noticed. She said nothing.Late morning, she set a fresh stack of reports beside the untouched envelope."If you decline," she offered, her voice soft, "someone else goes."I kept reading."If someone else goes, they'll do their best." A pause, precise. "It won't be your best."Nothing accusatory in her tone. No pressure behind it either. Just a fact, delivered plain, the way she delivered everything that mattered.I didn't answer. She nodded once and returned to her f
