SebastianMarcus called at two-fourteen.I was at the apartment — the one I had kept, not because I lived there anymore but because some professional meetings were more appropriate in a space without Eli's library reorganisation notes on the counter and the spare room visible at the end of the hall. I had been there since nine for a meeting with the Cole Industries board, which had taken the morning, and I had stayed afterward because the apartment was quiet and the sentencing was happening and I did not want to be in the house or the office or anywhere with other people in it when the call came."It's done," Marcus said.I was looking out the window. "Tell me.""Four years," he said. "Reduced to two with full cooperation credit. Financial penalty addressing the share manipulation — the full assessed value of the manipulated positions, with interest. Formal bar from holding director or officer positions in any public company." He paused. "The judge acknowledged the cooperation explici

SebastianFourteen weeks.Eli's library reorganisation pilot had been extended to two additional sections. Mrs. Brennan had described his evaluation methodology as, and I quote from the letter she sent home, the most systematic approach to collection management she had encountered from a non-professional. Eli had filed this assessment under confirmed findings and was already planning phase three.Amelia had read past page four of her book. Then past page forty. She had finished it on a Thursday evening with her feet on the sofa and a cup of tea that had gone cold and I had been reading beside her and she had closed the book and looked at it and said: that was good and then looked at me and said: I haven't finished a book in eight months. I had said: I know. She had set it on the table and picked up another one.Saturday mornings had continued. The house was the house. And then Marcus called on a Tuesday morning."The appeal hearing is tomorrow," he said.I was in the kitchen. SebastianMarcus called at eight-seventeen on a Wednesday morning.I was at the stove. Coffee was made — I had been the first one down, which happened on days when I woke early with something running quietly in the back of my mind that was not anxiety but was adjacent to it. The appeal ruling had been expected for three days. I had not been anxious about it in any productive sense — Marcus had been clear about the probability — but it had been present in the way unresolved things were present, a background awareness that something was still pending.Eli was at the table. He had his cereal and his research notebook, which he always had at breakfast. He was reading something he had printed — Mrs. Brennan's preliminary assessment of phase three of the library reorganisation, which had arrived by email the previous evening and which he had consumed once before bed and was consuming again now with the focused attention of someone who was not reading for pleasure but for data extraction.I

Neither of us had moved.Eli's footsteps had gone up the stairs. His door had not closed — he never closed his door completely, a habit I had stopped trying to change because it was, in his assessment, a better system for ambient household awareness — and the house had settled into the specific quiet of a Wednesday morning with one child doing library research upstairs and two adults at a kitchen table not moving. The coffee was still warm. The ruling was still on Sebastian's phone screen, face-up on the table between us.Neither of these things required attention."Eli did research," Sebastian said."Yes," I said."He identified the kitchen as the appropriate location.""Yes.""He assessed that you are ready."I looked at the table. At the grain of the wood I had been looking at for six years in the mornings in this house. At the drawer where the blueberry note lived. At the kitchen, that was the most honest room I had ever inhabited — the room where every true thing had been said, w

I had been awake since five-thirty.Not with worry. Not with the professional alertness of someone running a calculation that required early morning attention. With the specific, quiet presence of something that had arrived in the kitchen doorway the previous evening and had not left when Eli put away his drawing and went to brush his teeth.Sebastian was asleep. I could hear the particular quality of the house when he was asleep — the specific stillness of a room occupied by someone who had finally found the right place to be still in, which was different from the stillness of an empty room and which I had been learning to distinguish across the months he had been here.I lay in the dark and looked at the ceiling and tried to continue not thinking about it.At five-forty-seven I stopped trying. The fourth figure.Eli had drawn it small, in the garden, near the trees he had not yet decided the identity of. He had drawn it with the same careful deliberateness he brought to everything t
