Kieran’s POV Nightmares seep into my mind. Each scene acts like its own hand of darkness, spindly fingers curling around my thoughts and pushing them to a pit of quicksand. Since the war began, they’ve become a constant companion, holding me in their clutches until I find the courage to fight myself awake. My eyes pop open. My heart pounds against my chest like a wild bird against its metal cage. No hints of sunlight have broken through the darkness, and I force myself into a sitting position. Caius’ red gaze immediately meets mine from the other side of the tent. Instead of lying beside me while I sleep, he’s taken it upon himself to keep watch over Evans. My history professor’s light snores ricochet through the silence of the small tent. For some reason, the sound is soothing. Kieran’s POV I clutch the duffle bag to my chest as Caius races through the endless, frigid terrain. Cold wind slaps against my face, its fingernails of ice scraping against the soft flesh of my cheeks. Everything burns. I try to cover myself more with my jacket, but it just as quickly falls again. My eyes water when I try to spot Evans behind us. He’s barely keeping up with his electronic motorcycle. He must have done work on it before he started using it in the war, though. The bike that used to have a soft purr has now dissipated to silence. No wonder Caius never heard him approaching. I close my eyes and lean into Caius’ chest. This is the fastest we’ve ever traveled. Granted, he has a slightly smaller load since Evans offered to take the tent on the back of his bike, but to me it feels like we’re moving way too fast. Kieran’s POV Her words sound muffled, muted even against the blood rushing against my ears. I try to respond but my speech sounds garbled. Kieran’s POV The next few minutes are unadulterated chaos. Caius manages to keep Bonnie from escaping, but with Evans’ quickly deteriorating state, we end up needing her help. He’s unconscious and rapidly losing blood. Even his pulse is slowing. Caius’ red eyes sear me as I suggest letting her go. “She’ll kill you, human,” he mutters. “Letting her go is out of the question.” “We need her help!” Bonnie stares defiantly.ahead. Even though she’s a Secondary, she has the same sense of pride as vampires. She’s not angry that she’s being held captive. Kieran’s POV Bonnie leads us down hallway after hallway. More camouflaged men and women silently watch us as we pass. Only the whites of their eyes give them away. Nobody speaks to Bonnie, but I notice a few of them nod their heads as a sign of respect as she passes. They do watch us as we move past, however. Their varying shades of irises never leave us, but their expressions remain hidden beneath layers of decorative rock that I have never seen before. Caius grips me tighter as we move deeper and deeper into the mountain. He must be thinking this isn’t safe, because if this turns out to be dangerous, we have little chance of escaping without being hunted and killed. We follow Bonnie and turn a final corner, and a brilliant hue of light fills the space around us. I suck in a breath of disbelief as I glance at the wide ceiling. Kieran’s POV Each of the guards straighten and move positions in order to keep the massive doors propped open. The one on the left looks unfazed, but I notice the one on the right still isn’t happy about the situation. Bonnie scowls in his direction before stepping to the side to give us access to the door. Just before we reach its threshold I think I hear her laughing quietly, but I could be wrong. My fleeting moments of happiness and longing are replaced by anxiety. My eyes sweep over the new room. Guards line the wall, all of them standing tall with their hands tucked behind their backs. Their uniforms are different from the ones in the hallway. They’re not camouflaged to the rocks of the walls and the ceiling. Instead they’re all dressed in a matching purple color. A vibrant, rich sash sits across each of their torsos. Kieran’s POV The rich, warm smell of cinnamon seeps into the air. An excess amount of saliva slides down the sides of my tongue and my stomach grumbles. I haven’t smelled, let alone tasted, any other food but pineapple in weeks. Caspian pushes his chair around to the other side of his desk and gestures for me to sit. It has a tall back and looks every bit as fancy and important as he does. I hesitantly take a seat, and my hand slides over the purple velvet of the arm. The soft fabric tickles my fingertips. “You must be hungry,” Caspian comments. “I’ll request a meal for you while we talk.” “No, no. As if to humor me, Caspian crosses his arms over his chest and thoughtfully tilts his head to the side. “And how would you propose we accomplish that?” I hadn’t thought this far ahead. I’ve been so focused on finding them that I didn’t think past the discovery. I grimace and give the best answer I can find in my scattered thoughts. “By asking for peace. And if the vampires refuse, we fight them until they see reason. Same with the humans.” “So we fight for peace through war?” Caspian questions, gently jabbing my tactical approach. My shoulders slump and I stare down at my hands again. He’s right. It’s a stupid idea. So many lives were lost during the first war. It was such dark times. But what other way is there? If we continue to let the vampires push us around, how will we ever rescue all the humans under their control? “You’re right,” I admit. “It’s stupid.” I can hear the small smile in Caspian’s voice when he responds.
