Chapter Twenty One

Aleena — POVCaldwell pulled away slowly. So did I. The awkwardness settled between us like something neither of us wanted to name. Why does this keep happening around him?"Shouldn't you be at your post?" I asked, breaking the silence."Yes," he said. "Mr. Nico asked me to check on you.""He did?" Caldwell nodded."I always find you at your lowest point."I sighed. "Yes, you do." I smiled. He smiled back. It did something to his face I didn't want to notice."So tell me about yourself, Caldwell." His eyes settled into that guarded stillness. Walls going up."Nothing much to know." He looked away, then back. "Just an orphan. Hard life. A benefactor gave me a chance. School, then the military.""And your secret?" I asked. He looked away without answering. My phone buzzed. Are you planning to hide on the balcony all night, wife? Nico.I sighed out loud."Let's go in," I said to Caldwell. "Apparently my husband misses me." Something crossed Caldwell's face. A frown, there and gone. He ha

Chapter Twenty Two

Nico — POVStanding at the ER, watching Eleanor in critical condition. Aleena looked like she was holding back tears, trying to pull herself together for her sister's sake. That bastard Luciano did this to his own daughter.Caldwell stood too close, hand on Aleena's shoulder, comforting her. And she let him. His eyes found mine while he did it. That blue gaze, provoking me. I felt the urge to walk over and break his arm right where it rested.I let the thought pass."Are you sure you don't have feelings for her?" Jared's voice taunted in my head.Like hell I don't. She left me without a word. I moved on. Found Zoey. My true love. And then Aleena took it all away before I couldpropose, before I could marry her. Watching Aleena cry now felt like payback. Long overdue.I turned away from the hospital. I hated this place. It dragged up the worst memories of my life.I called Luciano."What do you want, asshole?" His voice came through sharp and annoyed."Watch your mouth when you talk to

Aleena — POVEleanor was stable. Still unconscious."Here," Caldwell handed me a coffee."You should go rest. No need to stick around." I took a sip."I don't think so." His eyes moved around the room. "Never know who might show up uninvited."I looked back at Eleanor. "I'll pay you extra for your time.""So you're taking me on then?" he asked."Yes," I whispered. "My lawyer will send you a contract."He smiled. Warm for a second, I forgot how to breathe. I looked away before it could turn into something I'd have to think about."Once you sign, I'll give you your first assignment.""Cool," he said. Then his eyes shifted to the door. Nico walked in. Same clothes from last night, hair disheveled, green eyes finding mine the second he crossed the room."You can go," Nico said to Caldwell. "I'm with my wife now."I glanced at Caldwell and gave a small nod. He looked exhausted. He gave one last look before he left."How is she?" Nico asked."Like you care," I said."I don't," he said witho

Chapter - Twenty Four

Aleena - POV"Hey sis." Eleanor finally regains consciousness, looking worse for wear. I hold the soup to her lips. She's so exhausted she can barely lift her head."Workaholic," she mutters, eyes flicking to my laptop."Yup, I am." I give her a weak smile."Aleena, I need to know who gave me drugs." She trails off, then pushes through it. "How long have you known I was being drugged?""Since my engagement party." I keep my voice low.She looks at me, worry sharpening into something else. "Father told me," I say."So it wasn't his enemy. It was our own father?" Shock flashes across her face, then vanishes, folding into something quieter. Something closer to grief."Should have known he'd be behind it." Her voice goes flat, sad. "I don't understand why he'd do this to his own daughter." Her eyes fill with tears.Because he doesn't see us as daughters. He sees us as leverage. I don't say it out loud. Not yet."He's not to be called father. He doesn't care about either of us." I say it s

Chapter - Twenty Five

NICO - POVJared confirmed Luciano isn't with Rayne Morris after what happened. I'm sure he doesn't trust Luciano to help him. First thing I need to do is talk to Ana. Who screwed up my plan by luring me into that seduction act last night? I should have known.I knocked on her door. "Babe, you're back." Her arms curled around my neck."Ana, why did you do this?" I asked. Her hands untangled from my shoulders, and her face fell. "What did I do?""Don't play games with me, Ana.""Wait, is this about the article?" I sighed."I didn't do it," she said."Really? You wanted me to go ask Linda if you gave her the scoop."She took a deep breath, her eyes carrying more hurt than the surface of her voice let on. "I'm jealous of you and her," Ana said, looking at me. She grabbed her phone and held it up. "You're kissing her. Did you get your feelings back for her?""Why are we having this conversation again?""Why not, Nico? You had a thing for her. She was the forbidden woman, the one you could

Chapter - Twenty Six

Aleena - POVNico sat in my car in silence for a few minutes."Planning to tell me, or are we waiting for someone?" I asked. He didn't say a word, infuriating as ever. "Get out of my car if you have nothing to say.""I'm asking you not to go forward with the divorce."I narrowed my eyes at him. "I need the Caruso business in my hands.""If that's your only agenda, I'll sign it over as repayment for the loan you owe my father.""No. You can't hand over the business to me," Nico said.It clicked then. If I divorced him, I'd carry the Caruso name alone and owe the business to my sister since she's the one still bearing it, unless I stayed married and the assets could be merged to the Bellini estate. There had to be more to it than that. He wouldn't agree to a divorce in six months otherwise."Calm down, woman." I looked at him and found his eyes already on me."I said nothing.""You're thinking loud."I rolled my eyes at him. "I'll think about what you said."His phone pinged with a noti

Chapter - Twenty Seven

Aleena — POVThe car was approaching a dead end when I spotted Bellini men, guns raised, aimed at the car that had been tailing us. Nico threw the wheel into a sharp drift and brought us to a stop, his hand pressing flat against my chest, pinning me to the seat. Gunshots cracked through the air. I squeezed my eyes shut. When the shooting stopped, I opened them. Bullet holes riddled the car behind us. The driver was slumped over the wheel, bleeding.I looked at the driver's seat. Nico was already gone.I stepped out. He was standing with his men, inspecting the scene, face unreadable. I didn't get closer. He turned and found my eyes in the distance."Get in the car, Aleena. We're going home."I nodded. My gaze dropped to the dead driver, his hand resting at an angle, a snake tattoo on the back of it. Then Nico's hand was at the small of my back, steering me toward the door, opening it. I got in. He followed. The ride home was tense. Nico's jaw was tight, one hand firm on the wheel, eye

Chapter- Twenty Eight

Aleena — POVWe landed in France. My hangover had mostly faded by the time we reached the hotel. The suite was something else entirely. Ivory and gold, French windows stretching floor to ceiling with Paris laid out behind them, gilded furniture, a crystal chandelier, marble bathrooms, silk drapes, and parquet floors. The kind of room that cost more per night than most people made in a year.Nico dropped his jacket and looked at me. "We need to talk."I raised an eyebrow. "Strange phrase coming from you. " I sat down. He watched me with those flat, unreadable eyes."I need you to go to this club." He pulled up the location and showed me."Tell me everything," I said. "Leave nothing out.""The Griffin club." His jaw tightened. "Their financial ledgers aren't online. Everything lives on a single USB locked inside theoffice. No digital trail. No way to touch it from the outside."He unfolded a blueprint on the table."You get that USB, and we give the cops enough to make them hand over t

Chapter - Twenty Nine

Aleena - POVI didn't pay mind to Nico's words. Mathew's hand trails slowly up my thigh. I hate it. His lips inch closer, and fear crawls through my frame, cold and heavy. Before I can pull away, he speaks. "You know Nico hates you so much after you..." A loud noise interrupted Mathew before he could finish. He looked at the intruder who barged in. Nico's eyes locked onto Mathew."Nico," Mathew said, with disdain."I am here to take my wife with me," Nico said."Like hell she's going with you. You forget you're bargaining on my turf, asshole." Mathew squared his shoulders and pressed a button. An alarm blared. Mathew's men surrounded Nico in no time, guns pointed at him. He looked unbothered. His eyes stayed only on me."Aleena, come to me," Nico called. Mathew turned over his shoulder to meet my gaze.Mathew mouthed, "You won't find your father's location if you go with him," he warned me out loud. Staying with Mathew is a risk too. I believe this asshole will pounce on me the second

Chapter - Thirty

Nico — POVAleena was unconscious on the bed. That bastard had drugged her. If I'd walked in five minutes late, Mathew would have raped her.I stood in the doorway for a moment, watching her chest rise and fall, listening to her mumble something I couldn't make out. I pulled the door shut and walked away before I did something I couldn't take back. Jared ended his call and looked up."Did they get him?" I asked."Luciano wasn't at the location," Jared said."He stashed the drug sample in the safe before he bolted." Jared's jaw was tight. "Prepared. The old bastard planned this.""I'll drag him out of whatever hole he's hiding in," I said. "He doesn't get to run from this."Jared frowned. "I don't know how long it will take. Which means you're stuck with Aleena longer.”"I know.""You want her to suffer for what she did to Zoey." He said it like a fact, not an accusation."Yes," I said. No point pretending otherwise."Nico." His tone changed. "Tell her the truth. What she did. All of i
