Kaelors point of view I did not tell Zareth the rest of it that night. I could not. I had practiced the words a hundred times in my head. Every time I said them it ended the same way. With Zareth telling me not to do the one thing I had already decided to do. She had spent months fighting to survive. The least I could do was make sure she did not have to spend whatever time she had left fighting me Instead I sat beside her bed until she fell asleep listening to her breathing remembering the sound. You keep staring at me like I'm about to disappear she said sometime around midnight. You threatened to once I said. A sleepy smile came to her face. Still might she said. That does not surprise me I said. It was the conversation we had before I did something unforgivable. Mae found me packing the things two nights later. Herbs and old iron and a blade I had sharpened that morning. The look on her face told me she had known this was coming since the library. I knew it she said

Kaelors POVThey had to help me into the council chamber.I hated that than almost anything else that had happened to me in the last month and considering the last month that was saying something. The time I had walked through these doors I had been a king people feared.Today I was a king trying hard not to stumble over the threshold. The irony was not lost on me.My legs held, barely with a hand from James, on one side and a cane I refused to admit I needed on the other. My wolf when I reached for him answered slower than he ever had in my life. A pulse where there used to be a roar.My wolf murmured "I am still here."I said "Not very convincingly."My wolf said "I gave away most of the parts."I almost laughed. The councilman said, "A king who cannot stand on his own cannot be trusted to lead the kingdom through times." He was not being mean just honest. "This is not a punishment, Your Majesty. It is common sense."People in the room started talking"Thornwood is getting ready for

Kaelors POVWe had days, a week before Thornwoods forces reached striking distance. I spent every hour of it in council meetings I could barely sit upright through planning a defense with a wolf weak to trust in a real fight. The council chamber had grown quieter around me these few weeks. Not kinder just quieter.People stopped pretending not to notice when I needed a moment long to stand. They stopped pretending not to see James subtly repositioning chairs before I reached them or the way my hand occasionally tightened against the edge of a table when my legs threatened to give out beneath me.My wolf still answered when I called for him not immediately anymore. That frightened me more than I was willing to admit. James laid the scouting reports across my desk grimly. Their numbers are worse than the estimate he said. If they hit the pass before our reinforcements arrive we lose it outright.I scanned the reports my expression hardening with every line. There were troops than we had

Kaelors POVI made it back to Ashbourne two days before Thornwoods forces arrived. The ride was hard on me. My wolf is still not back to normal. I had to hide how much I was struggling. Twice during the journey I woke up to James calling my name. I was scared. My wolf was silent. That frightened me more, than anything else. The healer told me "You should not be giving orders in your state " and I let him say it because arguing would have used up strength that I needed to save for something more important."The ritual was successful " he said, his voice quieter now. ". Your Majesty your wolf has not started to heal at all. We should have seen some signs of it by now."James stood still beside me.I asked him "What if it does not heal?"The healer hesitated. Then he said, "Then Crescent Veil may have its king to survive a sacrifice ritual and lose his wolf forever."No one said anything after that.Zareth found me the night before the reports of Thornwoods advance scouts. We stood there

Kaelor met the King in the space between their lines his legs still shaking with exhaustion. James moved to follow. Kaelor said, "Stay back." The King was everything I expected him to be. Unhurried, precise, a man who had never once needed to shout to be obeyed. He said, "Your Majesty you look like a king whos had a month." Kaelor said, "I've had worse ". The King just smiled. He said, "Have you?" His gaze flicked to Kaelors cane. He said, "No I don't believe you have."Kaelor said, "Your daughter poisoned my sister and framed a woman for it. Your son led an assassination attempt against me. I'd say we've both had months Aldric." The Kings face didn't change,. I could sense a flicker of amusement behind his eyes.He said, "My daughter inherited my ambition. My son inherited his mothers conscience." It was a thing to say and it sent a shiver down my spine. Kaelor said, "You say that as though either excuses them " and the King just said, "No merely explains them."The King didn't flinc
