131. Nobody takes her

SELENA The gate buzzer went off a third time.Sienna’s fingers tightened in my pocket until the fabric pulled against my hip. Through the kitchen window I could see one of the guards already walking down the driveway toward the gate, hand raised to his earpiece. Another had positioned himself closer to the front door without being told. The house had shifted into a different mode in under a minute; quiet, coordinated, sealed.“Stay behind me,” I said.Sienna nodded and moved until she was fully hidden by my legs. The pink balloon from the park was still upstairs. I was grateful. The image of her walking to the door with it would have been unbearable. My phone rang. Kael.“I’m fifteen minutes out,” he said as soon as I answered. “Do not open the gate. Do not go outside. Put Sienna in the back room and keep her away from the windows.”“There’s a process server…”“I know what it is.” His voice was stripped down and cold. “The guards already sent me the feed. He does not set foot on the

132. The Past Is Calling

SELENA Kael didn’t open the envelope in the hallway. He carried Sienna into the living room, set her down on the couch with a quiet instruction to stay put, and only then tore the seal. The sound was sharp in the silent house. I remained standing because sitting felt like accepting something I hadn’t agreed to. The guards outside had already returned to their positions. From the window I could see one of them stationed near the gate, another near the side path. The property had become a perimeter.Kael’s eyes moved across the documents once. Then again. His face didn’t change, but the temperature around him did.“Well?” I asked.“Formal petition for scheduled access. Supervised visitation request. They’re citing ‘concern for the child’s welfare and limited maternal family contact.’” He flipped a page. “There’s an affidavit from Clara. And a supporting statement.”“From who?”He looked up. “Liam.”The name landed between us like a third person entering the room.Sienna, on the couch,

133. She Came for What Was Mine

KEAL The phone kept vibrating against the wood. Liam’s name sat on the screen like a mistake that had waited five years to correct itself. Selena had gone still beside the couch. Sienna’s small body was pressed into her side. Outside, the watcher remained parked across the street with a camera that my men were already documenting from three different angles. I picked up the phone on the fourth ring and answered without putting it on speaker. “What.” There was a pause on the other end. Then Liam’s voice, tighter than I remembered and trying not to show it. “You had your security threaten me at a park in front of my son.” “You approached my wife and my daughter.” “I returned a balloon, Kael. Then two men in suits told me to step away from Mrs. Carter like I was some kind of threat.” “You are a threat,” I said. “You signed an affidavit for Clara. You turned a five-minute public encounter into material for a custody-adjacent filing. Don’t call my phone performing conf

134. Behind His Closed Doors

KEAL I was out of the house before Clara reached the gate. The guards shifted as I crossed the driveway. One of them moved to intercept her; I raised a hand and he stopped. Let her come to the boundary. Let her feel the line.Clara stopped on the other side of the gate with the same composed posture she had worn in my office weeks ago. Cream coat. Perfect hair. Eyes that had already decided she was the injured party in every version of this story.“Kael,” she said.“You’re trespassing on the boundary of my property.”“I’m standing on a public sidewalk requesting access to my granddaughter.” Her voice was calm, projected just enough to carry. “Every Saturday. Supervised if you insist. Two hours. I am not asking for overnight stays. I am asking for a civil arrangement before this becomes uglier than it needs to be.”“No.”“You haven’t even… ”“No.”Behind me the front door opened. I didn’t turn. I knew Selena’s footsteps. I knew the exact second she stopped a few feet behind my left s

135. Touch His Family and Burn

SELENAThe house felt different after Clara left. Not safer. Just quieter in a way that pressed against my eardrums. Kael closed the front door, locked it, and stood there for a second with his hand still on the handle like he was daring the street to send someone else. Outside, the guards resettled into their positions. The cream coat was gone. The watcher car was gone. The words she had thrown at me on the driveway were not.The worst mistake of your life the day you opened your legs for your husband’s father.I went to find Sienna. She was in the living room, sitting on the rug with her animals lined up in a careful row. When she saw my face she stood up immediately and walked into my legs, arms wrapping around my thighs without asking questions. She had stopped asking as many questions in the last few days. That scared me more than the crying.Kael’s footsteps came down the hall behind me.“They confirmed the hearing,” he said. His voice was still tight from the gate. “Friday. T

136. When They Come for What’s His

SELENA For a second after he showed me the message, neither of us breathed.Temporary removal. Pending evaluation.Sienna out of the house while strangers decided whether this home was safe.Kael set the phone down on the desk with a precision that was more frightening than if he had thrown it. His face had gone very calm. The kind of calm that lived on the other side of anger; past shouting, past threats, in the place where he simply decided the world would bend.“They’re not taking her,” he said.“Kael.”“They’re not taking her.” He looked at me, and the man who had stopped himself against the bedroom wall two nights ago was gone. What remained was the version of him that had stood at the gate and told my mother he would become a problem she could not litigate away. “Friday is a hearing, not a verdict. A motion is not an order. Until a judge signs something that puts hands on my daughter, she stays in this house.”“If they get an emergency removal…”“Then they will arrive at a prop

137. His Wife, His Weakness

SELENA.The interior room had no windows.I hadn’t known it existed until Kael put a code into a panel behind a bookshelf in the downstairs hallway and a section of the wall unlatched with a soft hydraulic sound. Inside: a sofa, a low table, a cabinet of supplies, a second locked door at the back that he said led to a reinforced exit route I was not to use unless he told me to. The air smelled faintly of new paint and sealed dust.Sienna stood in the middle of the room holding her dragon, turning in a slow circle.“Is this a secret room?”“Something like that,” I said.“Is it because of Grandma?”Kael answered from the doorway before I could. “It’s because some people don’t understand the word no. You’ll stay here with Mummy for a while. I’ll be right outside.”He looked at me when he said it. Not asking. Informing. Then he stepped back and the door sealed between us with a muted click that made the small room feel suddenly smaller.Sienna sat on the sofa and arranged her animals on

138. His Touch, Her Fear

SELENA We accepted because refusal would have been a confession.Kael said it first, standing in the sealed room with the specialist’s message still glowing on my phone. His voice was flat, stripped of the earlier violence, replaced by something colder and more practical.“If we say no, we hand them the report they want. Uncooperative. Isolated. Parent refuses court-appointed observation. Clara won’t need to invent a narrative. We’ll have written it for her.”He was right. I hated that he was right. So by the next afternoon the house had been adjusted into a version of itself that could survive a stranger’s eyes. The most obvious guards were pulled back from the front elevation. The petition papers were gone from the coffee table. Sienna was dressed in soft yellow, hair brushed, dragon under one arm. I covered the last faint shadow on my throat with a high collar I almost never wore. Kael wore a shirt with no rolled sleeves, no open collar, nothing that looked like a man prepared fo

139. The Sin Beneath His Touch

SELENA The silence after Sienna’s sentence was total.Dr. Rahman’s pen hovered above the notepad for a half-second too long before it began moving again. She did not look shocked. She did not look triumphant. She looked like a woman who had just been handed the central fact of her report and was already arranging the language around it.Sienna seemed to sense that the air had changed. She hugged the dragon tighter and glanced at me for reassurance I could not give her without making everything worse.“Can you tell me a little more about that?” Dr. Rahman asked gently. “When Daddy put his hand on Mummy’s neck. Do you remember what happened before?”Kael spoke before Sienna could.“That’s enough.”His voice was quiet. Controlled. The kind of quiet that made the walls feel closer. Dr. Rahman looked up at him without flinching.“Mr. Carter, this is a standard part of…”“She’s four.” He didn’t raise his volume. He didn’t need to. “She’s already said what she said. You’re not going to walk

140. His Darkest Promise

SELENA Kael didn’t answer Sienna’s question about his face.He put the phone face-down on the table and walked over to the couch instead. Sienna watched him come with her dragon held tight under her chin. I stayed standing because I didn’t trust my legs to choose a side of the room and stick to it.He sat on the edge of the coffee table so he was lower than her. Closer to her height. The movement was deliberate. Careful. The man who had just read about an expedited removal hearing was still in his eyes, but he locked it down until only the father remained on the surface.“Sienna,” he said. “Can I talk to you?”She nodded once.“You told that lady something today. About Mummy’s neck. And about being scared.”Sienna’s shoulders crept up. “Was I bad?”“No.” The word was immediate. “You weren’t bad. You told the truth about how you felt. That matters.”She picked at the dragon’s ear. “The lady wrote it down.”“I know.”“Is she going to take me away?”Kael’s hands rested on his knees. I
