Mabel's pov My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat, and I hadn't even done anything yet.I stood barefoot in the clearing behind our house, the cold ground biting into my skin, my whole body strung tight the way it always got in this exact spot at this exact hour, like some part of me already knew what was coming and dreaded it before I'd even lifted my hand. The trees around me stood black and silent against a sky just beginning to lighten, and the only sound was my own breathing, too fast, too shallow, the kind of breathing that comes right before you do something you're afraid will fail again.“Oh moon goddess” I called out, almost breaking down.It was five days until Mate Recognition Season began at Mooncrest Academy, five days until I stood in a courtyard full of strangers and found out in front of all of them whether I was worth claiming. Five days, and I still hadn't managed the one thing every other wolf my age had already done years ago without tryin

Xavier's povThe second my eyes landed on her, something inside me jolted. I felt a spark, a very brief and sudden one; violent enough to lock every muscle in my body for half a second. She looked small standing beside her friend, awkward like she didn’t belong here, but the moment our eyes met, my wolf stirred—hard.A low, restless growl pushed against my chest but I forced it down immediately and looked away.“Xavier…”Bianca’s sharp voice snapped me back.I blinked and looked down at her, wine dripping from her ruined white blouse, her face twisted in annoyance.“Look what she did,” Bianca hissed.I tore my thoughts away from Mabel and focused on what mattered.Bianca.The future Luna everyone expected by my side, the alliance our families had built for years. The life I had already accepted.“It’s fine,” I muttered, taking off my jacket and draping it over Bianca’s shoulders. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”She leaned into me instantly, calming now that she had my attention. But as

Mabel's povBy the time the sun set tonight, every single person at Mooncrest Academy would have their mate. And me? The wolfless scholarship girl? I guess I might just have to sit and watch.I stood at my window watching the light change over the courtyard below, gold sliding into amber, amber sliding slowly toward the deep blue that meant evening was finally arriving whether I was ready for it or not.The whole academy had transformed over the course of the day into something electric and strange, every hallway buzzing with a nervous energy I could feel in my teeth even through my closed door.Students who normally moved through the halls with careless confidence now walked faster, spoke less, checked their reflections in every window they passed like the glass might warn them of something waiting on the other side.I sat down hard on the edge of my bed and stared at the uniform laid out beside me, white and simple, the kind of garment meant to mean something ceremonial, and I fe

Xander's pov I stood there in that dim corner with torchlight flickering against the stone walls and the little crying Mabel. “Ava please… please I just want to be alone.” Her tiny voice hit the walls of my ears. I had seen her cry before. Everyone at Mooncrest had, at one point or another, since Bianca and her crowd had never exactly been subtle about their opinions on scholarship students who could not shift. But I had never been standing this close when it happened. I had never felt what I was feeling right now, some invisible thread pulling taut in my chest, an ache that was not mine and yet somehow lived inside me anyway. "Hey." I said it softer than I meant to, softer than I said most things. Flirting came easy to me, always had, a permanent shield I kept polished and ready for exactly this kind of moment where an actual feeling threatened toshow its face. But looking at Mabel standing there shaking, I found the usual lines dying somewhere in my throat before they co

Xavier's pov I sat alone in my room long after the ceremony ended, long after the courtyard had emptied and the whispers had scattered into every corner of the academy, and I told myself the tightness in my chest was nothing more than exhaustion. I told myself the same thing an hour later when the tightness had become something closer to a fist closing slowly around my ribs, squeezing tighter with every breath I took. “Mmh…” I groaned. I did not cry out. I had trained myself out of that particular weakness years ago, back when Graves first pulled me aside in private and told me things no seventeen year old should have to carry alone. I simply sat there in the dark, jaw clenched, fists pressed flat against my knees, and let the pain move through me the way you let a storm move through, without resistance, without sound, waiting only for it to pass. It did not pass quickly. Rejection backlash was supposed to hit the one who was rejected. Every text I had ever read on the subj
