The Man With The Scar

The waits until the last family has left the corridor. That is deliberate. Veran did not become what he is by having important conversations where they can be overheard. He waited through the end of the assembly and into the emptying corridor and he is still waiting now, hands clasped in front of him, with the patience of a man who has made a decision and is not going to unmake it while he waits for the right moment to deliver it.We walk toward him.He watches us come with the expression of someone reading two things at once and trying to reconcile them. Riven he knows. He has known Riven the way the court knows Riven — from a distance, with the careful respect you give a god who could end you and never seems particularly interested in doing so. Me he is reading from scratch, the new information of this morning laid over the old assumptions, and I can see him working out which version of me is accurate."Lord Ashveil," he says. Then: "My lady.""Lord Veran," Riven says.We stand in t

Past the walls

The palace is quiet by the eleventh hour. Not empty. Palaces are never empty. There are guards at their posts and servants finishing their rounds, and somewhere in the east wing, a kitchen woman named Marta who can breathe properly for the first time in ten days. But the quality of the quiet is different from the morning quiet, deeper, less held, the quiet of a place that has let go of its performance for the night.Riven's rooms. He chose here because the window faces south, the city is south, and whatever I am going to try to do tonight, I should be as physically oriented toward it as possible. We do not know if that matters. We do not know most things about how far the Fate domain can reach or what it needs from the body that carries it. What we know is what has worked so far and what the domain has responded to, and we are building from there.Senna is not with us.She delivered what she needed to deliver this evening. The word about lineage records has been placed in the right co

The fourth hour is the darkest part of the night. Not the latest the palace has people moving at every hour, guards rotating, kitchen staff starting their first preparations, the particular insomnia of people carrying difficult things. But the fourth hour has a quality the others do not. A held stillness. The city outside the walls at its most quiet, the streets empty in a way they are not at midnight or at dawn, the specific silence of a world that has briefly stopped performing.I have been awake since the third hour. Not anxiously. I woke cleanly, the way I have been waking since I came back with purpose already present, no transition from sleep to awareness, just the immediate knowledge of what the day requires and where to start. I lay in the dark for one hour and I held the Sovereignty frequency Riven showed me last night and I learned it the way you learn something by repetition, going over the shape of it until the shape is familiar enough to carry without thinking about carry

Caelan's Move

He moves at noon.I feel it through the vessel before anything visible happens in the palace. The cold frequency in the merchant quarter shifts from its building hum to something active, the difference between a held breath and a released one, and I am in the middle of a meeting with Lady Cassel about the trade agreement draft when it happens and I have to keep my face exactly as it is and my voice exactly as steady and my hands exactly still on the papers in front of me while the thing Caelan built in the dark wakes up and begins reaching. It reaches for Fate first. That is how it was built. Fate first, the dominant frequency, the thing the vessel was locked to before I changed the center last night. It finds my frequency immediately because a vessel that size built by someone who knows what they are doing does not search. It calls. And the Fate domain responds the way it responds to everything that carries its frequency, with recognition, with attention, with the pull of like reachi

He arrives at the library at the eighth hour exactly. Not early, not late. The precision of someone who understands that punctuality in situations like this is its own communication. I am taking this seriously; I am not desperate; I know how to conduct myself. He knocks twice, unhurried, and when Senna opens the door, he steps inside and looks at the room the way people always look at the library when they enter it for the first time. The books. The low fire. The read, unlocked quality of a space that belongs to someone who actually uses it.He is thirty-one. Dark-haired. He holds himself with the contained stillness of someone who has spent years learning not to take up more space than necessary, which is its own kind of training and not the kind you get from comfort. His eyes, when they find me across the room, are old gold. The lineage mark.Elder Voss was right. They are unmistakable. The same color as my thread, the same color as her eyes and Elder Harren's eyes and every Fate-li
