Chapter 1

Logan gave me a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. Raine won't pull anything this time."As he spoke, he pulled her over and lightly pinched her cheek. "Come on. Promise Olivia you'll behave."The way they acted with each other made my stomach turn.I looked at him coldly. "You really think her promise means anything?"Raine instantly let out a dramatic shriek and threw herself into Logan's arms. Then, over his shoulder, she stuck her tongue out at me. "Logan, if you marry her, I'll jump in a river!""Don't say that."He patted her back before turning to me with an apologetic smile."Olivia, Raine's been a little emotional lately. Let's just go home for now and come back when she's feeling better, okay?""No!" I bit down hard, blinking back the sting in my eyes. "This is the ninth time. Every single time, you call her pitiful or say she's still young. What about me? She trashed me in public. Humiliated me in front of everyone. Have you ever felt sorry for me?"You get one choice

Logan frowned. But instead of calling out Raine, he looked at me."Olivia, bringing up the past won't change anything. Raine's young and impulsive. You should've been more careful."I laughed.By the time it stopped, my eyes were full of tears."Right. Of course." I nodded. "Everything's my fault. I was such an idiot."You're the real family. The three of you. Why would anyone care about me?"I pointed at Raine. "So that's your choice, right? You choose her. Fine. We're done.""Olivia Olsen!" Logan's voice dropped, already laced with impatience. "Have you had enough? Raine's young. You need to be more understanding—""Enough!" I snapped. "Stop talking!"Everything I'd been holding back finally broke loose."She's young, so I have to put up with it. She's immature, so I have to understand her. I'm sick of hearing that!"You know exactly what you feel for her. Don't hide behind the word brother."Logan, the wedding is off. And I'm done with you too."I turned and walked awa

"I don't believe you anymore," I said coldly. "Logan, keep blocking me and I'll report you for workplace harassment."I turned to leave. The next second, someone slammed into me.I stumbled, sharp pain shooting through my waist. Then she threw herself into Logan's arms and chirped, "Logan! I came to have lunch with you!"I hadn't planned to make a scene. But Raine pulled away from Logan and blocked my way.Her usual attitude was gone.Tears filled her eyes as she tugged on my sleeve."Olivia, I'm sorry. I don't even know what I did wrong, but Logan already yelled at me. You know I was abandoned when I was little. I'm just scared that once Logan marries you, he won't want me anymore. Can you forgive me this once?"Coworkers started whispering."So that's what Olivia's really like? Bullying Mr. Dunne's sister?""No wonder she lost all five babies. Maybe she deserved it."I stayed silent.Raine suddenly ran into the break room and came back with a cup of steaming coffee.Sh

They huddled together, whispering and pointing at me.The looks they shot my way were full of contempt. My stomach dropped.A bad feeling hit me.A minute later, Mr. Reed came over."Olivia, my office."Once I was inside, he tossed his phone on the desk."What is this? Someone reported you for inappropriate conduct. You ranked first, but your eligibility has been revoked."I opened the video. It was footage from the County Clerk's Office.Someone had filmed Raine accusing me."She's lying!""That's for us to investigate." Mr. Reed frowned. "Until then, you're suspended."I didn't even have to think.Logan did this. He was trying to keep me from leaving.I left his office and stormed straight into Logan's.Raine sat on his lap, holding his face and rubbing up against him.The second they saw me, Logan shoved her off and stood."Why didn't you knock?""Was this you?" I snapped.I clenched my teeth, barely holding it together."So what if it was?" Raine smirked. "Why

After boarding, I found my seat. The second I sat down, I froze.Noah was right beside me.My whole body went tense.Questions slammed through my head.Shouldn't someone like him be in first class?Wasn't a team lead supposed to be waiting in Ebonport? Why was he flying with us?Like he could read my mind, he said, "I'm in charge of the Ebonport branch. I'm flying economy because I want to get to know my key employees."He paused on purpose. "And I picked you myself."My eyes went wide.None of it felt real. It felt like a dream.Seeing the look on my face, he explained, "In your five years at Nordstrom Corp, you've closed four projects worth over fifty million, ten worth more than ten million, and another five worth over two million—"I quickly cut him off, my face heating up."Please stop. Doing my job is the least I should be doing. Thank you for giving me this opportunity."He gave a slight nod, pulled his eye mask back down, and didn't say another word. After we la

Noah put me in full charge of Jensen's project.Working with Jensen, I quickly realized he was seriously good at what he did.I admired him. I learned a lot from him. Before long, the work felt easy. One weekend night, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling window in my Ebonport apartment, holding a glass of wine and watching traffic crawl below.I couldn't stop thinking about how much I'd changed in less than two weeks. For five years, I'd been stuck in an invisible cage and hadn't even known it.When Logan and I first got together, we lived in an apartment under five hundred square feet.Later, I landed a few major projects on my own and earned big commissions. My mom was still buried in the debt my dad had left behind, so I gave her ninety percent of it to pay things down. The rest, plus Logan's bonuses, was enough to cover a down payment.I was so excited to talk about buying a place.Claudia shut it down immediately. "Raine is still young. She'll need money later. A girl dese

I let out a short, cold laugh."Logan Dunne, let me make this crystal clear. Not happening. Even if I'm single for the rest of my life, I will never get back together with you."My words hit a nerve. The hurt on Logan's face vanished, replaced by anger and obsession. He stepped closer and grabbed my arm. "I know you still have feelings for me. Otherwise, you wouldn't be this mad. Come back with me. Be good.""Let go!" I yanked free and stumbled back. "Logan, stop making a scene. We're over!""Making a scene?" Logan's eyes went red. "I'll show you a scene."He bent down and tried to throw me over his shoulder again. Then Jensen appeared and punched him in the face.Logan staggered back, then pointed at Jensen and started yelling. "Wow. So you did have another guy behind my back!"Raine was right at the County Clerk's Office. Maybe those babies weren't even mine. Maybe that's why you got rid of them and blamed Raine!"You disgusting bitch! I'll kill you both!"He raised his f

My mom sobbed into the phone. "They said we have three days to pay the last hundred grand. If we don't... they'll take one of my legs. Olivia, I'm scared..."I forced down the panic. "I'll get the money. I won't let anything happen to you."After I hung up, my head was a mess.A hundred thousand was way too much for me right now. Then my phone rang again.Unknown number.I answered, and Logan's smug voice came through."Quit your job and come back to marry me. I'll give you the money.""You bastard!" I shouted, shaking with rage. "Logan Dunne, you think this will force me back? It won't.""Stop acting tough." Logan chuckled. "Olivia, be a good girl and do what I say. Otherwise, if something happens to your mom, don't say I didn't warn you.""Keep dreaming."I hung up.The pressure and humiliation hit me all at once.I couldn't hold it together anymore.I crouched in the corner of the break room and burst into tears."What's wrong?"A gentle voice came from over my head.

On the night of the gala, my mom did my makeup herself. Then she straightened my gown and smiled."You get prettier every day. Tonight, you'll be the most beautiful girl in that room."I looked at myself in the mirror. For the first time, I understood. This was the person I was supposed to be.The second I walked into the ballroom, Jensen's eyes lit up."Olivia, you look incredible tonight. Seeing you out of a business suit is enough to make me fall for you."I shot him a playful look and smiled. "Thank you."As the night went on, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me.No matter where I went, that gaze seemed to follow. It put me on edge. But every time I turned around, I saw no one.Eventually, I gave up.After the gala ended, Jensen offered to drive me home.He told me to wait by the entrance while he grabbed the car.The night air was cold.A gust of wind hit me, sending a shiver down my back. Then someone suddenly rushed in front of me and drop

Chapter 10

"You really think you're still good enough for me? We're not even in the same league anymore. Leave."My words snapped something in Logan. His eyes went red.He yanked a knife from his jacket and snarled, "If you won't come with me alive, I'll take your body home instead. You're mine. No one gets to take you from me."He raised the knife and lunged. Then someone rushed out and grabbed his arm.Raine.She clung to Logan's arm and laughed like she was out of her mind."Logan, I already spent all the money you gave me. Give me more, okay? If you do, I'll help you kill this bitch!"I caught a glimpse of the track marks covering her bare arms.I understood immediately.Logan shoved her away. "I already gave you money and told you to disappear! Why are you still following me?"Raine hit the ground, then scrambled right back up and threw herself at him again. "Didn't you say you liked me on my eighteenth birthday? Didn't you have fun with me? Just give me a little more money. You
