At the County Clerk's Office, Logan Dunne's adopted sister folded our marriage application into a paper airplane and launched it across the room. For the ninth time. I was done. Then she went nuclear. "I just don't think you're good enough for Logan! Like, what are the odds you got pregnant five times and lost every single one? Maybe they weren't even his. Maybe you got rid of them on purpose! You're just a used-up tramp!" The whole lobby turned. Every stare hit like a slap. Even the clerk who'd just been calling Raine out now looked at me like I was trash. I started to snap back, but Logan's mom, Claudia, cut me off. "Raine's only acting out because she can't handle Logan leaving her. She was abandoned as a child. She's suffered enough. Be patient with her. "And you're Logan's fiancée. You should understand. Be the bigger person." I looked at Logan. He was smiling, patting Raine's head like she'd stolen a cookie. "You little troublemaker. Don't do that again." Then he faced the clerk. "Could we get another form? She'll behave this time." I slapped my hand over his. Be the bigger person? Big enough to let her trash my name in public? Big enough to let her wreck our marriage license appointment? Fine. I'd be generous. I'd give Logan back to her. I didn't want him anymore.

Chapter 1

Logan gave me a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. Raine won't pull anything this time."

As he spoke, he pulled her over and lightly pinched her cheek. "Come on. Promise Olivia you'll behave."

The way they acted with each other made my stomach turn.

I looked at him coldly. "You really think her promise means anything?"

Raine instantly let out a dramatic shriek and threw herself into Logan's arms.

Then, over his shoulder, she stuck her tongue out at me. "Logan, if you marry her, I'll jump in a river!"

"Don't say that."

He patted her back before turning to me with an apologetic smile.

"Olivia, Raine's been a little emotional lately. Let's just go home for now and come back when she's feeling better, okay?"

"No!" I bit down hard, blinking back the sting in my eyes. "This is the ninth time. Every single time, you call her pitiful or say she's still young. What about me? She trashed me in public. Humiliated me in front of everyone. Have you ever felt sorry for me?

"You get one choice. We get the license right now, or we're done."

Before Logan could answer, Claudia shoved me so hard I stumbled.

"Olivia, why are you being so dramatic? Raine's had a hard life. Would it kill you to cut her some slack? And honestly, after five miscarriages in a row, anyone would wonder. Maybe the problem really is you."

Her words seared straight into my heart.

For five years, I got pregnant over and over because Claudia once said, "We need to know if you can have kids before the wedding. Otherwise, how is this family supposed to continue?"

Five pregnancies.

Five miscarriages.

They watched me go through all of it.

The last time, I gave up a promotion and switched to a desk job just to protect the baby. Every day, I choked down bitter medicine and gave up every food I loved.

And still, fate never once chose me.

"My fault?" My eyes burned. My voice shook. "Do you have any idea what I did to protect those pregnancies? How much I gave up? Or did none of you even notice?

"The third time I was pregnant, Raine ran straight into me on purpose and knocked me down. I miscarried right there. Was that my fault too?"

Raine peeked out from Logan's arms and shouted, not guilty for even a second.

"Who told you to stand there? Logan, look at her. She's blaming me again!"
