All Chapters of Falling For The Mafia: Chapter 31 - Chapter 40

KATHYThe first thing I felt when I woke up was pain.A dull ache spread through my body, making it difficult to move. The second thing I noticed was the smell. It smelt like clean sheets and medicine. My room.I slowly opened my eyes and the ceiling above me came into focus. I was back at the mansion. For a few seconds, I simply stared at the ceiling, trying to remember how I'd even gotten there because the last thing I remembered was me being at the gala.Natalia.Leaving the ballroom to the balcony and talking to Alice.Someone hit me.Then I woke up in a dark alley. I tried to fight the man, then he shot me.I turned my head and froze when I saw Viktor sitting beside my bed.His elbows rested on his knees, his hands clasped together. He looked exhausted. There was dark circles under his eyes, and his usual perfect appearance looked slightly tacky. When his eyes met mine, he straightened immediately."You're awake." He said in a quiet tone.I swallowed."How long have I been uncons

KATHYSasha was driving me insane.Actually, all the guards were. But Sasha was the worst. He was always there. If I went to the garden, he was there. If I went to the library, he was there. If I went downstairs for a glass of water, somehow, six feet of muscle appeared behind me.I was beginning to think he slept outside my bedroom.I wouldn't have been surprised."Do you ever leave?" I asked him one afternoon. He looked at me through the rearview mirror."No."I sighed."That wasn't a joke.""I know."I turned toward the window.Viktor had completely lost his mind.I couldn't even leave the mansion without an escort anymore. The previous day, when I'd gone to Nana's, I had to actually lie to her.She looked at the men following me and raised an eyebrow."Who are they?""Friends from work."Friends.That was one word for heavily armed men following me around like I was some international criminal.Nana had accepted the explanation.Barely.At least Viktor had finally allowed Gabby to

KATHY I was spending more time with Anya, more time than I expected. Somehow, the little girl had gone from being my student to becoming someone I genuinely cared about. She followed me around the mansion whenever she could, showing me things she found interesting, asking me questions in the little English she knew, and dragging me into games I didn't always understand. She made the mansion "liveable" with her tiny feet and laughter. That afternoon, Anya was sitting beside me on the floor of the study, trying to arrange a puzzle while I helped her with the pieces. "No, Kathy," she said, shaking her head when I tried to put one of the pieces together. "Then where?" She pointed proudly at another section. "Here" I stared at the piece. Then at her. "You're very bossy for someone who can't even reach the top shelf." She giggled. I smiled. Moments like this made it easy to forget why I was actually in the mansion. Then my thoughts drifted back to Viktor. Hi

VIKTORI was furious. Not irritated or annoyed. Goddamn furious. How she managed to get past all the guards? I had no idea. Sasha was standing in front of me looking like he'd rather be in a gun fight right now than tell me what had happened."She just disappeared" I glared at him. "I know she disappeared" "We've been looking for her boss" "Apparently not very well, else you would have found her" I yelled making him cower in fear. I dismissed him, so he would go do his job and find her.I think I would just go find her myself.I went to my study, picked up my jacket and my gun when I glanced through the security cameras feed by chance and found her climbing down the fence like she was on a quest to Mount Everest.Irritation washed over me as I walked downstairs and went to the back of the house where she was coming from. The moment she saw me, she stopped, like she already knew she was in trouble. Because she WAS in trouble. "Where were you?" I asked, getting straight to t

KATHYI couldn't stop thinking about my parents. It had been years since they died, but somehow, I was thinking about them differently now.Not as the two people I had lost. Not as the reason I became a detective. But as a case.My case.I sat on the edge of my bed with my laptop open in front of me, staring at the screen.I had memorized the details of my parents' deaths years ago.I didn't need to look at anything.I knew the date.I knew where they were supposed to have been.I knew what the police had found.I knew what Nana had told me.And I knew what I had been told about Viktor. The Russian Mafia had been involved.Viktor's organization had been connected to the area.My parents had been investigating them. Then they died. For years, those things had been enough for me.But now...I wasn't so sure.I opened the old report.I'd read it before.Hundreds of times.Maybe more. But this time, I wasn't reading it like a daughter.I was reading it like a detective.I went through the
