Mona disappeared down the hallway, the soft sound of her feet fading little by little until Kane heard the bedroom door click shut.Silence settled over the penthouse again. It was strange.A month ago he would've welcomed the quiet. He had built this place because he enjoyed it. No unnecessary conversations. No clutter. No interruptions.Now...The apartment only felt alive when she was in it.Kane looked down into his coffee before letting out a quiet laugh. The woman talked to her goldfish like he paid rent. She greeted Adam every morning as though they'd known each other for years. She counted cars from the living room windows like it was a sport.Yesterday she'd spent five minutes apologizing to the microwave because she'd stopped it with one second left. She was...Ridiculous.And somehow she'd turned his perfectly organized life upside down. His phone vibrated against the marble countertop.Three new emails.A reminder for the executive board meeting. Two messages from investor

The boutique finally closed its doors just after six.Mona let out a long sigh as she untied the silk scarf around her neck, carefully folding it before placing it inside her locker.“My feet officially quit,” she announced dramatically.Olivia laughed from the next locker.“Congratulations.”“For what?”“You survived your first day.”Mona smiled to herself.“I actually had fun.”“I knew you would.”After changing into her cream cardigan, she carefully picked up the enormous bouquet of pink roses Kane had sent earlier that afternoon. They still smelled fresh, filling the room with their soft floral scent.Lila walked past and grinned.“Going home with all those flowers?”Mona looked down at them, unable to hide her smile.“I guess I am.”“Lucky girl.”Heat crept into her cheeks. She tucked the card safely back between the roses before making her way outside. The evening air greeted her with a cool breeze. Her eyes immediately searched the row of parked cars. She found him almost insta

Mona was exhausted by the time her shift ended. Her feet hurt. Her shoulders ached. Her brain felt like it had been running on maximum speed since she walked into the boutique that afternoon. But she was smiling. She had survived another day.And she had a secret.A very good secret.Mona climbed into a cab outside the boutique and gave the driver her address before settling against the seat. Her phone was already in her hand.Sunday.She had been thinking about Sunday all day.Actually, she'd been thinking about it since yesterday. She had casually asked Kane if he was free.Very casually. So casually that she'd spent fifteen minutes rehearsing the question before finally sending it.Are you busy Sunday? His response had come almost immediately. Why?She'd stared at the screen. Then she'd typed:Just asking. He'd sent back a suspicious emoji.Of course he had.Kane was annoyingly observant.Thankfully, he'd eventually told her he was free.Perfect.That gave her enough time to prepar

Mona sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes. She dragged herself out of bed, pulled on an oversized T-shirt, and padded barefoot toward the kitchen.Stanley's breakfast came first.Always.She sprinkled a little food into his bowl and watched him immediately swim toward it."There you go."She leaned closer."You know, you're very lucky. I don't even feed myself this early."Stanley continued eating."Ungrateful."Mona smiled and reached for her phone. Her weekly pay had come in.She stared at the amount for a moment, a small smile slowly spreading across her face.It was a fortune for her .Money she'd earned herself.Money she could use to buy groceries, finish setting up her apartment, and put a huge chunk aside. She slipped her phone into her purse."Okay, Stanley. Grocery run."She grabbed her bag and headed downstairs. The moment she stepped outside, she stopped.A huge truck was parked directly in front of the building.Several workers were unloading equipment, while another man stood

Kane pulled up outside her building.Mona looked through the window. The huge construction truck was gone. She noticed several workers' tools had been packed away too."Oh."She smiled."They've actually done a lot."Kane glanced toward the building."Good."She turned to him."Thank you.""For what?"She smiled."For everything ."His expression softened."Get upstairs safely.""I will."She leaned over and kissed his cheek."Goodnight, big boy.""Goodnight, princess."She opened the door."Mona."She turned."Call me when you get inside."She smiled."Yes, boss."He shook his head as she climbed out.She waved before walking toward the building. The moment she stepped inside, she noticed the difference. The entrance looked cleaner. Some of the old fixtures had already been removed.Even the elevator doors had been marked with a notice about the ongoing work.Mona smiled. Her landlord really was getting things done quickly. She climbed the stairs, humming softly. But halfway up, she
