The heavy brass doors of the Metropolitan Grand Ballroom swung open with a violent crash. Sir! You cannot enter without an invitation card! a young security guard shouted, grabbing at the ragged coat sleeve of the man pushing past him. Do you have any idea who I am?! Julian Vance roared, shoving the guard back against the carved oak paneling. I am Julian Vance! Get your filthy hands off me! Inside the golden ballroom, under massive crystal chandeliers, hundreds of high society donors, politicians, and television news crews turned in total shock. Julian stumbled onto the thick velvet carpet. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair unwashed, and his face covered in rough stubble. His once tailored designer suit hung loosely off his gaunt frame, wrinkled and stained from the damp, insect infested studio apartment on Forty Second Street where he now hid from his creditors. At the center of the main floor, Senator Marcus Sterling stood beside a champagne tower, laughing with a group of majo

The heavy double doors of the State Senate Judiciary and Commerce Chamber slammed open, echoing like a cannon shot against the marble pillars. Emergency Senate Bill 409 is a matter of immediate economic national security! Arthur Pendelton’s voice boomed through the microphone, his knuckles turning white as he slammed his hands against the mahogany podium. We are witnessing an unprecedented, hostile takeover of our state’s critical technological infrastructure by foreign backed holding trusts! I demand an immediate vote to freeze every quantitative tech mainframe, server bank, and algorithmic data center acquired by the Vane Thorne entity in the last seventy two hours! Sitting behind the raised judicial dais, Chairman Senator Thomas Hayes frowned, leaning toward his microphone. Mr. Pendelton, this committee was called on twenty minutes' notice. You are asking us to issue an injunction against a trillion dollar domestic conglomerate without a formal judicial review. Because every sec

Two million dollars in clean offshore bearer bonds, Jonas. Not a penny less. Richard Harrison, Chief of Staff to the Mayor, leaned across the marble coffee table inside the private VIP suite of the Obsidian Club, his eyes gleaming with desperate greed. He gestured sharply toward the velvet bag sitting between them. Do you have any idea what happens if the Mayor finds out I am meeting a black market broker in the middle of the night? The Mayor will not find out a single damn thing unless you fail to deliver the cash, Mr. Harrison, Jonas whispered, his gaunt, rat like face twisting into an ugly smirk. Jonas reached inside his leather jacket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive encased in reinforced titanium. He held it between two dirty fingers, letting the dim ambient lighting reflect off its polished edge. Is that Cynthia's drive? Harrison demanded, his hand reaching out instinctively. Is that the maritime ledger? Jonas yanked his hand back immediately. Hands on the table

The heavy double oak doors of the District Attorney’s top floor executive suite slammed open, the brass handles crashing violently against the wood paneling. What is the meaning of this intrusion?! District Attorney Marcus Vance roared, slamming his crystal glass onto his mahogany desk. He threw his phone handset onto its cradle and stood up, his face flushed red with unbridled fury. Who authorized you to enter my private office without clearing security?!Vivienne Vane stepped across the threshold with calm, aristocratic elegance. She wore a tailored midnight black suit, her dark hair pinned back, her dark eyes glittering like black ice in the morning sunlight streaming through the floor to ceiling windows.Flanking her right side was State Inspector General Jonathan Sterling, carrying a heavy leather briefcase and flanked by two senior state investigators.Your security detail was disarmed and relieved of duty three minutes ago, Marcus, Vivienne said smoothly, her heels clicking sof

To the undisputed economic future of this state, the Vane Thorne Infrastructure Act!Governor Christopher Lawson raised his crystal flute of vintage champagne high into the air, his voice echoing across the grand, gilded ballroom of the Executive Mansion.
