I grabbed Evan by the collar and shoved him into the dim wine cellar before he could even think about fighting back. The heavy door clicked shut behind us. Dust and old wood filled the air. Clara dropped the bomb the second we stepped into her apartment. Her place was quiet. Soft lights. A small table already set with coffee and papers. Evan and I had slipped in through the back door just like she told us. No one followed. I still scanned every corner out of habit. "Sit down both of you," Clara said fast. She closed the blinds tighter. "I did not sleep much. There is more I need to tell you about Vance." Evan took a chair. I stayed standing near the window. "More? You already gave us plenty last night." She poured three cups of coffee. Her hands moved quick. "This is bigger. My father is a high ranking federal prosecutor. He has been building a quiet tax evasion case against Marcus Vance for over five years." I nearly dropped the cup she handed me. "Five years? And you are just telling us now?" Evan leaned forward. His eyes locked on her. "Clara. Your dad? The prosecutor? You never mentioned that once."

The door creaked open just as I had Evan pressed against the far wall for one last kiss. My head snapped toward the sound. Clara stood there in her red dress. Her eyes went wide for half a second. The contact slid the small drive across the sticky bar table and my whole past came rushing back. Detroit bar. Back corner booth. Dim lights and cheap beer smell. I had slipped away after the morning skate. No one knew. The guy across from me was Dmitri. Old linemate from my Russian days. Scar on his cheek. Eyes that had seen too much. "You sure this is clean?" I asked low. My fingers closed around the drive. Dmitri nodded once. He kept his voice under the loud music. "Decrypted it myself. Took months. The plane dropped so fast my heart slammed into my throat. One second we were cruising smooth toward Detroit. The next the floor fell out from under us. Trays slid. Guys yelled.
